NFL standings: Updated AFC, NFC playoff picture for Week 17 of 2021 season NFL-playoff-picture today NFL AMERICAN FOOTBALL The 2021 NFL season is closing on the end of its new 17-game schedule with only two games left for every team. Here's checking on the updated standings and what the playoff picture is looking for Week 17. NFL POWER RANKINGS: Cowboys, Bills, Eagles rise; Patriots, Steelers, Browns fall for Week 17 NFL standings for Week 17 AFC playoff picture Who would be in? 1. Tennessee Titans (11-5), champions, AFC South. The Titans won the division with their Week 17 home rout of the Dolphins while the second-place Colts also lost to the Raiders. They got the bonus of jumping back up to the top seed and home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs with the Chiefs loss. They have the tiebreaker because of a Week 7 home win over Kansas City. They just need to beat the Texans in Week 18 to secure the lone bye. Remaining schedule: at HOU 2. Kansas City Chiefs (11-5), champions, AFC West. The Chiefs lost at the Bengals in Week 17 to lose control of the top seed in the AFC playoffs. Now they need to worry about staying at No. 2. To get back to No. 1, they need a Titans loss in Week 18 plus a closing road win vs. the Broncos. If the Chiefs lose to the Broncos, they could drop all the way to No. 4 because they also lost head-to-head to the two teams behind them, the Bengals and Bills. Remaining schedule: at DEN 3. Cincinnati Bengals (10-6), champions, AFC North. The Bengals clinched the division title with their thrilling Week 17 win over the Chiefs, further boosted by the Ravens losing at home to the Rams. They also remained ahead of the winning Bills, whom they haven't played, because of a superior record in AFC play (8-3 vs. 6-5). A win in Week 18 would keep them here and possibly allow them to jump the Chiefs into No. 2. A loss could open the door for the Bills to jump here and the Bengals to end up at No. 4. Remaining schedule: at CLE 4. Buffalo Bills (10-6), first place, AFC East. The Bills stayed put by rallying in the second half to beat the NFC's Falcons at home in Week 17. 5. New England Patriots (10-6), second place, AFC East. The Patriots stopped their two-game losing streak as expected by destroying the Jaguars in Week 17. 6. Indianapolis Colts (9-7), second place, AFC South. The Colts failed to clinch a wild-card spot behind the winning Titans as they lost to the Raiders at home in Week 17. 7. Los Angeles Chargers (9-7), second place, AFC West. The Who can get there? 8. Las Vegas Raiders (9-7) 9. Baltimore Ravens (8-8) 10. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-7-1) . Who's set to be out? 12. Miami Dolphins (8-8, eliminated) 12. Cleveland Browns (7-8, eliminated) 13. Denver Broncos (7-9, eliminated) 14. New York jets (4-12, eliminated) 15. Houston Texans (4-12, eliminated) 16. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-14, eliminated) The Browns, Broncos and Dolphins were all eliminated by the Chargers beating the Broncos. NFL DRAFT 2022: Mock draft | Big board of top 100 prospects NFC playoff picture Who would be in? 1. Green Bay Packers (12-3), champions, NFC North. The Packers built on their NFL-best record by beating the Browns at home in Week 16 for their fourth consecutive victory with a red-hot Aaron Rodgers. They are a win shy of last year's total with two games left. They will remain the No. 1 seed favorites heading into Week 17, one game ahead of multiple teams. 2. Los Angeles Rams (12-4), first place, NFC West. The Rams clinched a playoff spot before stepping on the field against the Ravens, but with the comeback Week 17 win at Baltimore. 3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (12-4), champions, NFC South. The Buccaneers beat the Jets in unexpected comeback fashion in Week 17 to keep pace with the winning Rams and also jump the losing Cowboys. 4. Dallas Cowboys (11-5), champions, NFC East. The Cowboys lost to the Cardinals in a failed comeback in Week 17 to drop behind the winning Rams and Buccaneers. The division was wrapped up in Week 16 but the Cowboys blew the chance to push for the No. 1 seed behind the Packers. 5. Arizona Cardinals (11-5), second place, NFC West. The Cardinals stayed alive in the NFC West race by beating the Cowboys and keeping pace with the winning Rams. 6. San Francisco 49ers (9-7), third place, NFC West. 7. Philadelphia Eagles (9-7), second place, NFC East. Who can get there? 8. New Orleans Saints (8-8) 9. Minnesota Vikings (7-8) Who's set to be out? 10. Atlanta Falcons (7-9, eliminated) 11. Washington Football Team (6-10, eliminated) 12. Chicago Bears (6-10, eliminated) 13. Seattle Seahawks (6-10, eliminated) 14. Carolina Panthers (5-11, eliminated) 15. New York Giants (4-12, eliminated) 16. Detroit Lions (2-13-1, eliminated)
NFL standings ; NFL playoffs picture ; AFC playoffs picture ; NFC playoffs picture ; NFL wildcards NFL Playoff Picture 2022: Week 17 Standings, AFC and NFC Wild-Card Hunt Entering the final game of Week 16, both the AFC and NFC feature a jam-packed wild-card race. The Arizona Cardinals have clinched a playoff spot, and the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots are in decent positions. But behind them, 12 teams are fighting for three postseason berths. And if the Miami Dolphins beat the New Orleans Saints on Monday, there's a shake-up coming in the AFC. Right now, it seems every result reorganizes the standings. As Week 16 nears its end, we're resetting the playoff picture and checking out the latest news in the wild-card chase. AFC Standings Winslow Townson/Associated Press AFC East Buffalo Bills: 9-6 New England Patriots: 9-6 Miami Dolphins: 7-7 New York Jets: 4-11 AFC North Cincinnati Bengals: 9-6 Baltimore Ravens: 8-7 Pittsburgh Steelers: 7-7-1 Cleveland Browns: 7-8 AFC South Tennessee Titans: 10-5 Indianapolis Colts: 9-6 Houston Texans: 4-11 Jacksonville Jaguars: 2-13 AFC West Kansas City Chiefs: 11-4 Los Angeles Chargers: 8-7 Las Vegas Raiders: 8-7 Denver Broncos: 7-8 NFC Standings Morry Gash/Associated Press NFC East Dallas Cowboys: 11-4 Philadelphia Eagles: 8-7 Washington: 6-9 New York Giants: 4-11 NFC North Green Bay Packers: 12-3 Minnesota Vikings: 7-8 Chicago Bears: 5-10 Detroit Lions: 2-12-1 NFC South Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 11-4 New Orleans Saints: 7-7 Atlanta Falcons: 7-8 Carolina Panthers: 5-10 NFC West Los Angeles Rams: 11-4 Arizona Cardinals: 10-5 San Francisco 49ers: 8-7 Seattle Seahawks: 5-10 AFC Wild Card Eric Christian Smith/Associated Press After beginning the season 0-3, Indianapolis has surged to 9-6. That hot streak—which includes a valuable win over New England—has positioned the Colts to make the postseason. New England is also in good shape. Despite losing to Indy last week and Buffalo on Sunday, the Patriots are 9-6. Both the Colts and Pats still have a matchup with the 2-13 Jaguars. And even if Indianapolis or New England finished 10-7, the early indication is tiebreakers very heavily favor them. Unless the Bengals or Bills collapse down the stretch, the AFC basically only has one playoff spot remaining. And it's a glorious mess. Each of the Ravens, Chargers and Raiders are 8-7. If the Dolphins win Monday, they'll improve to 8-7 and replace Baltimore in the tentative standings. The Steelers are a half-game behind at 7-7-1, and the Broncos and Browns are both 7-8. Miami would join the latter group with a loss to the Saints. Given the logjam, breaking down a list of scenarios is unnecessary right now. Key games, however, demand our full attention. Week 17 includes Las Vegas at Indianapolis, Denver against the Chargers and then Cleveland at Pittsburgh. Week 18 pits New England at Miami, Pittsburgh at Baltimore and then the Chargers at Las Vegas. NFC Wild Card Jed Jacobsohn/Associated Press Although the list of NFC contenders is thinner, two wild-card spots are unclaimed. Either the Cardinals or Rams have clinched one; whichever team doesn't win the NFC West is still playoff-bound. Five other franchises remain in the hunt. Both the Eagles and 49ers are 8-7, the Vikings and Falcons are 7-8, and the Saints are right in the middle at 7-7. No matter the result on Monday against Miami, New Orleans won't replace San Francisco or Philly in the up-to-date standings. Peering ahead, though, the Saints will have a tiebreaker edge on the Niners even if both teams keep winning. The final two weeks of the campaign is loaded with intrigue. Each of Minnesota (Packers), Philly (Cowboys) and San Francisco (Rams) are slated to take on current division leaders. And in Week 18, the Saints take on the rival Falcons. It's possible the No. 7 seed is a battle of attrition and that one wild-card chaser ultimately backs into the spot despite a loss. Sports NBA Standings 2021: Wizards, Bulls, Nets Are East’s Best Teams One Month Into Season Lonzo Ball DeMar DeRozan Chicago Bulls Lonzo Ball 2 and DeMar DeRozan 11 of the Chicago Bulls celebrate a shot made by Ball during the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on November 15, 2021 in Los Angeles, California. The Eastern Conference standings don’t look as expected one month into the 2021-2022 season. The Washington Wizards (10-3), Chicago Bulls (10-4) and Brooklyn Nets (10-4) sit atop the standings as the East’s only 10-win teams with approximately one-sixth of the schedule complete. Brooklyn’s record is no surprise, given that the Nets have been the clear NBA favorites since the summer. Washington has been viewed as a fringe playoff contender after sneaking into the 2021 postseason through the play-in tournament. Chicago is exceeding expectations, looking to make the playoffs for the first time in five years. The Wizards and Bulls made significant changes to their roster that are paying immediate dividends. Washington sent Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers (8-7) in a blockbuster five-team trade. Chicago added DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso in free agency, just a few months after trading for Nikola Vucevic. DeRozan scored a season-high 38 points in Chicago’s 121-103 win over the Lakers on Monday. The 32-year-old is having a resurgent year with the Bulls, ranking third in the NBA with 26.9 points per game. “I can go down the list of just being counted out, being looked over,” DeRozan said Monday, via ESPN. “So many chips that's on my shoulder that I carry. And just wanting to be a winner and wanting to enjoy this ride. We can’t play this game forever, so I want to get as much as I can out of it.” The trio of DeRozan, Ball and Zach Lavine is averaging a combined 65.7 points and 12.5 assists per game while shooting 39.8% from three-point range. Caruso is third in the league with 2.5 steals per game. Vucevic is averaging a double-double. Chicago ranks fifth in defensive rating. Washington has the NBA’s fourth-best defense, which has led the team on a five-game winning streak for the East’s best record. The Wizards have beaten the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks (6-8) and the current No. 5 seed Cleveland Cavaliers (9-6) during that stretch. Bradley Beal leads Washington with 23.3 points per game, but it’s been the role players who joined the Wizards in the offseason that have made the biggest difference. Montrezl Harrell and Kyle Kuzma are averaging a combined 32.5 points and 17.6 rebounds per game. Spencer Dinwiddle is putting up 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and a team-high 6.0 assists per contest. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is contributing on both ends of the floor. The Nets beat the Wizards earlier this season, quickly rebounding from a sluggish start. Brooklyn has climbed up the standings with eight wins in nine games, losing only to Chicago during that stretch. The Nets have a plus-11.4 point differential in their last nine games. Kevin Durant is a top MVP candidate, leading the league with 29.6 points per game. Durant is shooting 58.6% from the field, giving him the best field goal percentage of the league’s top-five scorers. James Harden is averaging 20.4 points and 10.0 assists per game in November. RELATED STORIES Hawks, Bucks, Blazers Among Disappointing Teams Heat, Warriors, Jazz Are Early Contenders The Miami Heat (9-5), Cavs and New York Knicks (8-6) round out the very early playoff picture in the East.
MLB playoff clinching scenarios for Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mariners in AL wild-card race MLB BASEBALL TORONTO BLUE JAYS WASHINGTON NATIONALS V BOSTON RED SOX TAMPA BAY RAYS LOS ANGELES DODGERS LOS ANGELES DODGERS V MILWAUKEE BREWERS BALTIMORE ORIOLES NEW YORK YANKEES NEW YORK YANKEES V TAMPA BAY RAYS WASHINGTON NATIONALS BOSTON RED SOX MILWAUKEE BREWERS TORONTO BLUE JAYS V BALTIMORE ORIOLES A lot still needs to be settled in MLB on the final Sunday of the 2021 regular season. Three postseason races are going down to the wire: two, for the wild cards in the American League; the other, for the NL West championship. And if everything breaks right, we'll have chaos beyond Game 162. Four AL teams have a shot at those wild-card berths as they enter play Sunday. Sporting News takes you through the Sunday scenarios as the baseball drama cranks all the way up: AL wild card standings Team W L GB Red Sox 91 70 - Yankees 91 70 - Mariners 90 71 1 Blue Jays 90 71 1 Where do they stand? The Red Sox and Yankees are tied for the top spot; the Blue Jays and Mariners are a game behind. What's at stake? The last two open playoff spots in the majors. Boston and New York are in control at 91-70. Toronto and Seattle are chasing at 90-71. Two of these teams will meet in the wild-card game for the right to face the Rays in the ALDS, but so much can happen in the days leading up to it. MORE: Updated playoff bracket, magic numbers as of Oct. 2 If all four teams finish tied after Sunday — the Yankees and Red Sox would have to lose, and the Blue Jays and Mariners would have to win, for that to happen — MLB will hold a first-of-its-kind set of tiebreakers. Here's how the matchups will be determined, from MLB.com: The clubs would choose/receive A, B, C and D designations. On Monday, Oct. 4, Club A would host Club B and Club C would host Club D. The winners of those two games would be the Wild Card teams and would face each other in the ballpark of whoever had the superior head-to-head record. The team with the best overall winning percentage against the other three teams gets first choice of which club it wants to be (A, B, C or D). In this case, that's the Red Sox. The Blue Jays and Yankees would pick next. The Mariners don't have a choice in which team they would be as the fourth-place club in this group. That means they'll likely have to travel east right after playing in Seattle on Sunday. If just three teams are tied for the two spots, then Club A would be at home vs. Club B on Monday. The winner would become the first wild card. The loser would play at Club C on Tuesday. The winner of that game would be the second wild card, and the wild-card game would be moved back. Head-to-head records would determine who gets the first pick. MORE: Playoff scenarios entering the weekend If three teams are tied for the second spot, Club A would host Club B on Monday. The winner of that game would host Club C on Tuesday. The winner of the second game would move on to the wild-card game, which again would be moved back. If two teams are tied for the second spot, then there would be a one-game tiebreaker on Monday. The team with the better head-to-head record would host it. The winner would advance to the wild-card game. If two teams clinch wild-card berths but are tied (that can only be the Red Sox and Yankees with 92 wins each), then the wild-card game would be in Boston because the Red Sox won the season series 10-9. Got all that? Who do they play? Yankees vs. Rays, 3:05 p.m. ET; Red Sox at Nationals, 3:05 p.m. ET; Blue Jays vs. Orioles, 3:07 p.m. ET. How will they play it? It's all hands on deck for the final Sunday, but the Red Sox may be in the best spot pitching-wise with Chris Sale starting. The onetime ace has been solid in his return from Tommy John surgery. The Nats will counter with rookie Joan Adon, who will be making his MLB debut. MORE: Why the Jays would be the scariest team to face in playoffs The Yankees have Jameson Taillon lined up to face Tampa Bay's Michael Wacha, although Taillon left his last start early with an ankle injury. Toronto will have ace Hyun-Jin Ryu on the hill against Baltimore's Bruce Zimmermann. Ryu has a 15.58 ERA over his last three starts. Left-hander Tyler Anderson will go to the mound first for the Mariners. He'll be opposed by LA rookie Reid Detmers. NL West championship Where do they stand? The Giants lead the Dodgers by one game. What's at stake? Avoiding the wild-card game, mostly. The rivals go into the final day with 106 and 105 wins, respectively; they've clinched the most wins by a 1-2 combo in baseball history. They've also clinched playoff berths. But they don't want to play a one-game season on Wednesday against the Cardinals, even though the game will be at home.
