Brighton 2-2 Bournemouth: Neighbours in entertaining clash
Brighton 2-2 Bournemouth: Neighbours in entertaining clash

Asingle day into 2018 and already we can all but dish out the award for scrappiest goal of the year.Congratulations to Bournemouth. Not that Eddie Howe will care how they go in.They were heading for a 2-1 defeat by Brighton when this almighty goalmouth scramble occurred and saved their skin at the AMEX Stadium.Jordan Ibe’s corner clattered into a collection of defenders as a series of shots made Brighton’s box look like a pinball machine. Finally, a slight mis-kick by Callum Wilson caught them all by surprise as the ball trickled over the line, seemingly in slow motion.Job done. This was certainly an absorbing first fixture of the New Year.Brighton had 15 shots overall while Bournemouth had 27.It finished 2-2 but could have been double that.Brighton took the lead through Anthony Knockaert then saw it wiped out by their former academy graduate Steve Cook.Glenn Murray gave them the lead again before Wilson’s scruffy strike. It denied Chris Hughton an anniversary win with the manager celebrating three years in charge of the Seagulls.Appointed on December 31, 2014, when the club were sitting 21st in the Championship, he has taken them to mid-table in the Premier League.Exactly 10 years ago, Alex Revell scored a hat-trick for Brighton in a 3-2 League One win over Bournemouth in front of only 5,000 fans at the Withdean Stadium. It has been a decade of progress for both of these teams.Brighton had only scored a single goal in their last six games but wasted no time at the Amex.Pascal Gross played the ball behind for Jose Izquierdo, who crossed for Knockaert. With Asmir Begovic out of the picture, Knockaert steered his shot on target from the tightest of angles. It was timed at four minutes and 32 seconds – the club’s fastest in the Premier League.Knockaert had his second goal of the season and Brighton had their New Year’s Day fireworks.Brighton could have taken a 2-0 lead when Gross’ perfectly-weighted pass into Murray allowed the striker to stretch his legs.He fired a shot towards the far corner but Begovic got his fingertips to it.The visitors were the ones asking the questions ahead of half-time and it led to the leveller.First, Ibe turned his marker and sprinted into space before firing a shot from distance that forced Mathew Ryan into a diving save.A header by Cook was then cleared by Markus Suttner when Ryan may not have had it covered behind him, And from the resulting corner, Bournemouth scored.Ibe crossed and Cook attacked, sending a looping header home off the underside of the crossbar. While Brighton were kicking themselves for not having a player on the back post, Cook refused to celebrate, having started his football career with the Seagulls a decade ago.It was end to end in the final minutes of the first half.Brighton were wondering how it was not 2-1 when a through-ball by Gross gave Izquierdo a tap-in.The goal was gaping in every sense of the words, but Begovic somehow got a leg to it.There was still time for Bournemouth to get a goal before th

Olivier Giroud's 'Scorpion' goal, Huddersfield's iconic Premier League moment and more celebrations
Olivier Giroud's 'Scorpion' goal, Huddersfield's iconic Premier League moment and more celebrations

MY year of sports photography started on January 1, New Year's Day, with Arsenal's Olivier Giroud scoring one of the most amazing goals I've ever snapped. The Frenchman's "Scorpion" goal even won him Fifa's Goal of the Year - what a way to start 2017.But of course, this year has been full of incredible sport and with it, some sublime images. There was the big grudge fight between David Haye and Tony Bellew and domestic football trophies won by Manchester United and Chelsea, while Huddersfield were promoted to the Premier League.I started getting ready for the Winter Olympics by photographing our Olympians as early as May, with British short-track speed-skater Elise Christie the focus. The World Athletics Championships were a great success for Mo Farah ,while the party-ending race with Usain Bolt vs Justin Gatlin certainly drew a crowd. And then there was Harry Kane securing England's place in the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.Check out my pictures of the year, below.ARSENAL vs Crystal Palace was my first game of the New Year.working while sick with flu feeling like a you-know-what.But life has to go on as the chief sports photographer for The Sun.This snap was taken on a Canon1dx mkii with a 70.200mm lens. David Haye vs Tony Bellew was the big grudge-match fight of the year at London's O2.Haye horrifically injured his Achilles during the fight and in round 11 Haye was knocked out of the ring before the fight was stopped. This image was taken on a Canon 1dxii with a 14mm lens. I ALWAYS look forward to the FA Cup and working with the smaller clubs, with the lower league sides taking on the big boys.My job for the day was working alongside Adebayo Akinfenwa of Wycombe Wanderers. The size of the lad worked superbly for this exclusive picture, as he donned his Beast Mode Hat, with the sunlight going down.IN the dying minutes of the League Cup final between Manchester United and Southampton, it was all square at Wembley Stadium. But Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored to make it 3-2 to United, as this dramatic low-angle picture taken with a remote camera captured the goal perfectly.Taken on a Canon 1dxmkii with a 24mm 1.4lens with Pocket Wizzard controllers to fire the camera. LEICESTER'S brave hopes of making the Champions League semi-final against Sevilla were ultimately left unfulfilled.During the clash, Jamie Vardy showed his sheer frustration after being clean through on goal.and missing. He punches himself in the face with a perfect right hook to the chin - any boxer would have been proud of this KO punch.Picture taken on Canon 1dxmkii with a 300mm lens. IT'S the transfer story the entire league is talking about.Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City.In this snap, Pep Guardiola gives the Chilean forward a cheeky, knowing grin after their Premier League showdown.Could Sanchez be on the way, on a free at that, next summer? IT was the final day of the season.as champions Chelsea went up against relegated Sunderland. After the game, Diego Costa and Willian snapped

Everton 0-0 Chelsea: Allardyce's side frustrates Champions
Everton 0-0 Chelsea: Allardyce's side frustrates Champions

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford excelled in front of watching England manager Gareth Southgate as Sam Allardyce’s men stretched their unbeaten run to seven games. With Wayne Rooney absent through illness, Everton soaked up plenty of pressure from Antonio Conte’s men with Pickford making excellent stops to deny Eden Hazard and Pedro twice. In addition, skipper Phil Jagielka cleared off the line twice in the same attack and Everton escaped when Ashley Williams headed against his own goalpost. While Conte will be pleased with his third-place side’s overall performance – Everton failed to register a single shot on target - the visitors missed suspended striker Alvaro Morata with Hazard playing as a false No 9 for most of the game until Michy Batshuayi came on for the final 20 minutes.A flu bug meant Rooney wasn’t involved, though Williams and Mason Holgate clambered off their sickbed to be among the substitutes.Allardyce tried to combat Chelsea by pushing Idrissa Gueye in advance of Morgan Schneiderlin, hoping to put pressure on N’Golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko. But Chelsea will feel they still had enough of the ball to have returned to London with the points.Everton’s first hero was 35-year-old Jagielka starting his first game under Allardyce. After Hazard had whipped a dangerous ball into the Everton box, Jagielka was on the line to block Bakayoko’s shot after it had beaten goalkeeper Pickford. And when Willian followed up the rebound, the same player was there to clear again. In a nice touch, Davies ran over to his experienced colleague to shake his hand as a thank you for keeping the home side level. It appeared Allardyce’s tactics centred on stopping Chelsea’s left wing-back Marcos Alonso. On the other flank, Victor Moses was afforded a lot of space and Cuco Martina was booked when he had to sprint across and bring down the Nigerian international on the edge of the box.Fortunately for Everton, Willian took the free-kick rather than Alonso and blazed the 22nd minute chance over.Pickford first got his chance to show Southgate what he can do after 35 minutes when he got a strong hand to tip over Pedro’s well-struck effort as it headed towards the top corner.Hazard started roaming more to the left-hand side towards the end of the first half having had little joy down the middle. One thrilling run saw him beat three defenders but he let his frustration show when no Chelsea team-mate showed for the ball and he eventually lost possession. There was one late scare when Calvert-Lewin muscled Thomas Christiansen off the ball and dashed into area before the visitors got reinforcements back to block.Allardyce made two changes at half-time, Ashley Williams and Sandro Ramirez on for Lennon and Davies as Everton went to three-at-the-back.It nearly backfired immediately when Pickford had to make a terrific reflex save from Pedro and Williams reacted well to block Alonso’s follow-up.Allardyce must have cursed his luck when Gueye then limped off after 51 minutes forcing

Real Sociedad 3-1 Sevilla: Carlos Vela scores in last game
Real Sociedad 3-1 Sevilla: Carlos Vela scores in last game

Sevilla missed the chance to break into La Liga's top four as they slipped to defeat at Real Sociedad, with Carlos Vela on target in his final appearance. The former Arsenal striker joins Los Angeles in January and bid farewell with a last minute goal to crown victory for the hosts on Wednesday night.Eduardo Berizzo's side would have leapfrogged Real Madrid with victory - albeit having played two games more - but saw their winless league run extended to three matches.Wissam Ben Yedder fired Sevilla level just before half-time after Inigo Martinez had headed Sociedad into the lead. But Sociedad regained the lead through Igor Zubeldia in the 76th minute and Carlos Vela made sure of their first league win in five matches by adding a third in the closing stages.Guido Pizarro, Pablo Sarabia and Ever Banega had all gone close for Sevilla in the second half and Ben Yedder had a low shot saved in the bottom corner in the first period.Getafe climbed into the top half with a 2-0 home win against bottom club Las Palmas.Former Cardiff defender Juan Cala headed Getafe into an early lead and Amath Ndiaye's low finish put the home side 2-0 up in the 15th minute.Alberto Aquilani went closest for Las Palmas, forcing a fine low save from Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the second half, while both sides created several other goalscoring chances.Getafe secured their second win in four games, while Las Palmas slumped to a seventh defeat on the road and remain below second-bottom Malaga on goal difference.

Transfer rumor: Pochettino refuses to rule out Gareth Bale move
Transfer rumor: Pochettino refuses to rule out Gareth Bale move

Mauricio Pochettino is adamant that Tottenham need to bring players in before the start of the World Cup next summer, with a potential return to north London for Gareth Bale a genuine possibility in the eyes of the former Southampton manager.Bale completed a big-money move, that has since risen to over £90m with the inclusion of add-ons, to Real Madrid 2013.However, the Welshman has struggled to find the consistency he showed at White Hart Lane and it is understood that Los Blancos will be looking to cut their losses next summer."Of course, he’s a fantastic player.I saw him in Madrid when we played there," Pochettino said about the Welsh winger, as quoted by the Sun."He’s always kept in contact with the people who worked here in the past.""I don’t have a close relationship with him or the people around him.But you never know what’s going to happen in football."Although fans will be keeping their eyes firmly on what Tottenham can do during the January transfer window, Pochettino is already thinking ahead to the summer.Michael Regan/GettyImages Knowing that a player's stock can rise after a successful international tournament, the Argentine said he wants to be proactive in the transfer market and get deals over the line quickly."You cannot wait until after the World Cup to do business," he said, as reported by the Mirror."You need to be clever because maybe some players’ value is down here but after a good World Cup it is up here, and then you can forget all about it."When we signed Dele, that is a very good example of why you need to anticipate - and we are a club that needs to anticipate. If we wait, we are going to lose.".

Georgia vs. Georgia Tech odds: Picks from expert on 5-1 CFB run
Georgia vs. Georgia Tech odds: Picks from expert on 5-1 CFB run

Saturday's college football action kicks off with SEC East champ Georgia traveling to Bobby Dodd Stadium to take on Georgia Tech.Georgia is favored by 10.5points, down from -12.5.The Over-Under, or number of points Vegas thinks will be scored, is 53, up from opening at 52.5.In a rivalry game that could have serious playoff implications, you need to see what Adam Silverstein has to say.The assistant managing editor for CBS Sports, Silverstein was born and raised in SEC country and knows the league inside and out.In one of the biggest conference games of the year, Silverstein boldly backed Auburn (+2.5) against a then-unbeaten Georgia team. The result? Auburn rolled to a 40-17 blowout victory.Anybody who took Silverstein's advice never even broke a sweat in that game. Now, he's analyzed Georgia vs.Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon from every possible angle and locked in his pick. And he's sharing it over at SportsLine.Silverstein knows the Bulldogs get it done with a strong, veteran rushing attack spearheaded by Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, both of whom are in the top 10 in the conference in rushing yardage.Head coach Kirby Smart has also brought a defensive mindset from Alabama to UGA, leading a unit that is second in the conference in total and scoring defense. The Bulldogs have surprised oddsmakers all year and come into this contest with a strong 7-3 record against the spread. But that doesn't mean that they'll be able to cover a large 10.5-point spread against a Georgia Tech team is 6-2 against the spread.Auburn exposed some of Georgia's weaknesses in that blowout a couple weeks back.If the Bulldogs get behind in the game, or behind the chains, they stumble.Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm hasn't always been ready to make big throws in those situations.Georgia Tech, which uses a triple-option attack and ball-control approach, will try to gain a lead and impose its style. And if recent history is any indication, this rivalry game could come down to the wire. These teams have split the last four meetings; two of them went into overtime. The average margin of victory during that span is just five points and only one matchup since 2002 has been decided by more than two scores.Silverstein has evaluated all of these circumstances and has locked in his pick. He's identified a striking trend with one of these teams that is pushing him to one side, and he's sharing who that is over at SportsLine. So which side should you back in Georgia-Georgia Tech on Saturday? Visit SportsLine now to see which side of this classic rivalry you need to be all over, all from an expert who has nailed five of his last six college football picks against the spread, and find out.

Bradford City 0 Plymouth 1: Bantams pay penalty for missed spot-kick
Bradford City 0 Plymouth 1: Bantams pay penalty for missed spot-kick

Lone striker Jake Jervis struck in the 35th minute and it was enough to give the Pilgrims their second away win of the season.Bradford welcomed back from Republic of Ireland duty goalkeeper Colin Doyle, released from Martin O'Neill's squad for their World Cup qualifying play-off in Denmark.Right-back McMahon also returned from a one-game ban along with midfield player Jake Reeves, after groin trouble.Plymouth, on the back of a five-match unbeaten run in all competitions, were without suspended midfield play-maker Graham Carey, and, with all three senior goalkeepers on the injured list, Remi Matthews, on loan from Norwich, again stepped in.Winger Lionel Ainsworth made his first league start since the end of September following hamstring problems and the former Huddersfield player was joined by ex-Doncaster full-back Aaron Taylor-Sinclair and Leeds central midfield man Toumani Diagouraga.Bradford dominated possession and looked set to go ahead midway through the first half but Charlie Wyke's goalbound header from Nicky Law's cross struck Sonny Bradley in the face before the City striker fired narrowly wide from the follow-up opportunity. However, the Pilgrims took a shock 35th-minute lead when David Fox fed the ball down the right channel and Ainsworth's low cross was turned in by Jervis despite a challenge from Nat Knight-Percival.Bradford responded and Matthews did well to twice tip over efforts from Paul Taylor before the break.City full-back Tom Field was sacrificed for left-winger Tyrell Robinson at the start of the second half and following one raid down that flank, McMahon fluffed a shooting opportunity in the clear.Robinson then teed up Reeves to hit a swerving shot which struck the bar from the edge of the area but the equaliser would not come as the game entered its final half-hour.Joel Grant headed over for the Pilgrims before Alex Gilliead replaced Reeves to give City more width.City got their spot-kick when Romain Vincelot was impeded at the far post heading a cross from Nicky Law but Matthews beat away McMahon's penalty going to his right to concede a corner.Grant fired narrowly wide as the visitors threatened on the break and City ran out of time despite goalkeeper Doyle venturing forward in stoppage time.

'Scoring against defensive Plymouth Argyle is difficult to do,' says Bradford City boss Stuart McCal
'Scoring against defensive Plymouth Argyle is difficult to do,' says Bradford City boss Stuart McCal

Bradford City will have to patient if they want to beat Plymouth Argyle today according to their manager Stuart McCall. He believes that the Pilgrims will be tough to break down now that they have gone five games unbeaten in all competitions. And because of how '"strong" they are defensively, McCall is urging the Valley Parade fans to be patient too.“Plymouth are unbeaten in five and do not concede many goals away from home,” McCall told the Yorkshire Post.“They have been defending really well and teams have been finding it hard to get opportunities to score goals against them.“I would imagine they will come with the same mindset. We have been doing some work in training in the last couple of days with that in mind against a really solid block of defence.“It might be a case of having to be patient.“Wigan had to wait until the 84th minute and then got a penalty, which they scored against them (recently).“They are certainly determined and now a more confident side, even though they are still bottom of the table.” McCall was also keen to point out that the Bradford fans will have to be as patient as his players if they are hoping for a breakthrough. The Bantams' recent home form has been far from perfect with two defeats and a draw against strugglers Oldham Athletic in their last four league games at Valley Parade. So hosting a side bottom of the League One table is likely to be one Bradford fans will want a win from.“The crowd might have to be patient too,” McCall added.“I would like to think we will have the majority of the attacking play, but we have just got to keep at it.“There was the game here against Swindon last year when we scored two in the last few minutes against another struggling side.“Again, we have got to be prepared for that and be bright and inventive."When you are playing against a side who are strong defensively, you have to be creative and think outside the box and not be slow.
