Friday night results - 3 June 2011 Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League Glenorchy Knights 1 (A Robb 41) drew with Clarence United 1 (J Stevens 18)
Beachside gave as good as they got in the opening 15 minutes, but their good work came to nothing when they conceded a penalty in the 17th minute. David Abbott's shot was handled by Brett Pullen and Mr Kopra awarded the visitors a spot-kick, which was easily converted by Marcello Marchioli to give Kingborough the lead. Beachside were level in the 26th minute through a penalty by Pullen, which was awarded for Marc Iseli's foul on John Rogers. Photo: David Cooper makes it 3-1 for Kingborough [PlessPix] David Cooper missed a good chance for the Lions in the 29th minute when he did not connect properly with Ryan Bevan's cross from the right, the result of a fine build-up involving several consecutive passes in tight situations. Damian Pearce restored Kingborough's lead in the 32nd minute when he swept home Marchioli's free-kick from the left. Three minutes after the break, Cooper should have increased the Lions' lead when he latched onto a poor back-pass by Rogers, but with only keeper Michael Soszynski to beat, he lifted his shot over the bar. Cooper made amends in the 67th minute when he ran onto David Abbott's through ball and beat the advancing Soszynski to make it 3-1. Photo: Beachside's Huw Jarvis juggles the ball in front of the Lions' Michael Palmer [PlessPix] Beachside had a few half-chances but were unable to make up the leeway. Callan Paske was useful at the centre of the defence for Beachside in the absence of Nathan Robinson, who was unavailable, but Seth Van Heyster suffered a leg injury during the second half which saw him hobble of the field to be replaced by Pat Bigg. The win keeps Kingborough in fifth spot but now only a point adrift of fourth-ranked Tilford Zebras, while Beachside remain second-last, a point ahead of Olympia Warriors. Photo: A very determined Callan Paske of Beachside tangles with Kingborough's David Abbott [PlessPix] Beachside and Olympia meet next Saturday at Warriors Park at 7pm. This is a most unusual scheduling as the important Tilford Zebras versus New Town Eagles game kicks off half an hour earlier at KGV Park. There must be many people who would be keen to see both these important clashes. Match Report by Walter Pless website
Glenorchy Knights confirmed their revival under new coach Ahmed Abdaltam when they beat New Town Eagles, who are second on the Premier League ladder, in a penalty shoot-out at KGV Park on Saturday night after they drew 2-2 after extra-time. South Korean import Yeong-Sun Jo gave Eagles the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after he had been brought down by the Knights' Frenchman, Matthieu Gregoire. Gregoire atoned for his error when he equalised in the 28th minute after Corey Smith's free-kick from the left was not dealt with by the Eagles defence. Callen Griffin put Knights ahead in the 36th minute, but Michael Anderson made it 2-2 with a fierce volley on the stroke of half-time following a corner. Neither side could score in the second half, while Andrew Robb missed a glorious chance to give the Knights victory in the second period of extra-time when he failed from close range after a pass down the left by Griffin and an inch-perfect cross from Smith. Penalties converted by Gregoire, Jacob Huigsloot, Smith, Matthew Nowicki and goalkeeper Ben Peter gave Knights a 5-3 win in the shoot-out as only Jo, Adam McKeown and Andrew Clark netted for Eagles. Jamie Vernon fired against the crossbar and Eagles were out of the competition. Comments from Walterpless

Olympia Warriors thrashed Somerset 8-1 at Warrior Park this afternoon to reach the next round of the Milan Lakoseljac Memorial Trophy State-wide knockout competition. These winners join Launceston United, who beat Launceston City 2-1 on Maundy Thursday evening, in the final 16 of the competition. The other 12 sides in the final 16 are South Hobart, Clarence United, New Town Eagles, Tilford Zebras, Kingborough Lions United and Glenorchy Knights from the south, and Northern Rangers, Prospect Knights, Ulverstone, Devonport City, Riverside Olympic and Burnie United from the north. The final 16 round is when the going gets tough and the big teams start to meet each other. Olympia started like a house on fire and led 5-0 at the break. Lee Mason's deflected shot gave the home side the lead in the 6th minute, while Josh Fielding added a second four minutes later. Jayden Hey made it 3-0 in the 13th minute, Ben Phillips 4-0 on the quarter-hour, and Brady Cronk added the fifth in the 20th minute. Cronk continued the rout six minute after the break with his second and Olympia's sixth before a Nick Meredith header in the 65th minute made it 7-0. Fielding completed the home side's tally in the 68th minute with a tremendous shot, while Bobby Eaves netted a consolation goal for the visitors four minutes from the end. "I asked the boys to come out in the first 15 minutes and fire up the way South Hobart came out against us," said Olympia coach, Franco Previdi. "I told them to knock the ball around and play to feet and they went and did it. "I mean, the opposition didn't look that good or flash, but we didn't really give them a chance to get into the game. "They came up once, in the last 10 minutes and scored a goal against us when I knew we would be tired. I knew we'd lack a bit of fitness near the end. "We had six different scorers and it was a good team effort. "We could have had a few more, but it's not easy when after the first week you make some changes. "The boys are still making some mistakes, but we're definitely getting there. "Tony Dzelalija didn't too badly. I substituted him about 20 minutes into the second half." Hobart United downed Nelson 4-0 through goals by Riak Dhieu, Adhav Ngor, Gift Ochaya and Gazachew Atalay. Ruaidhri Carey hit a hat-trick for Taroona against Metro, the home side's other goal coming from Toby Dove. Metro's marksmen were Shane Kent, Danny Cowen and Aaron Marney. Kingborough Lions United scored the first goal and the last to show just how easy it can be. But, in the intervening period, they conceded seven goals through poor defensive play. A couple of their goals came from poor back-passes, while goalkeeper David Leamey was solely responsible for one as he allowed the ball to bounce in front of him and curve inside his near post. Photo: Kingborough's Joel Schuth clears upfield [PlessPix] Right-back Michael Palmer had a nightmare. He was responsible for marking Liam Scott, who scored five goals. Kingborough's signing from South Hobart, David Cooper, is proving a valuable acquisition. He has fine technical skills, pace and vision and he had a hand in both Kingborough goals. Ryan Bevan opened the scoring for Kingborough after just 6 minutes. Cooper played a difficult one-two with David Abbott on the left corner of the box and, when Troy Kaden could only parry Abbott's shot, Bevan was on hand to score from the rebound. The Zebras were level two minutes later when Matt Hall played a long ball forward down the left and into the Lions' penalty area. Palmer's attempted back-pass to Leamey was too soft and Scott nipped in, rounded the keeper and scored. Photo: Michael Palmer and Liam Scott (right) battle for possession [PlessPix] In the 13th minute, Jayden Welch missed a sitter from directly in front after Scott's low ball from the left of the box. Two minutes later, Scott was the villain as he missed a good opening provided by Henry Fagg. In the 20th minute, Kaden was forced to make a good save from Cooper, who had attacked down the left before finishing with a powerful drive. Five minutes later, Zebras hit the front when Palmer failed to clear an easy ball and Scott nipped in to score. In the 28th minute it was 3-1 as Welch outfoxed Damian Pearce on the edge of the box and beat Leamey with a crisp shot. Five minutes before the interval, Scott put Dwayne Walsh away on the right, but his poor first touch made him go wide and his low drive just cleared the far post. In the 42nd minute, Ladic put Scott into the left of the box and his shot pitched off stump, just like a cricket ball, and beat an embarrassed Leamey as it flashed inside his near post. Photo: Zebras' Liam Scott (right) about to take on Michael Palmer [PlessPix] Nine minutes after the interval, Walsh outpaced Marc Iseli and his shot came back off the bar for Scott to head home and make it 5-1. Walsh was also unlucky when his header came back into play off Leamey's right-hand post as Zebras dominated the match. In the 59th minute, Walsh added a sixth for Zebras as Leamey let the ball slip through his grasp. Leamey saved superbly from a Sam McIntyre header, from Hall's left-wing cross, 9 minutes from the end, but there was still time for another couple of goals. Ladic's left-wing cross was not dealt with by the Lions defence and Scott hooked the ball home. Will Abbott handled on the line and was shown a yellow card, but the goal stood. In stoppage time, a Zebras throw-in on their left flank was mis-controlled by a Zebras defender and Cooper gained possession and slipped the ball inside the box on the right for Bevan to score his second goal of the game.
