Glenorchy Knights Vs New Town Eagles Statewide Cup

Glenorchy Knights confirmed their revival under new coach Ahmed Abdaltam when they beat New Town Eagles, who are second on the Premier League ladder, in a penalty shoot-out at KGV Park on Saturday night after they drew 2-2 after extra-time. South Korean import Yeong-Sun Jo gave Eagles the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after he had been brought down by the Knights' Frenchman, Matthieu Gregoire. Gregoire atoned for his error when he equalised in the 28th minute after Corey Smith's free-kick from the left was not dealt with by the Eagles defence. Callen Griffin put Knights ahead in the 36th minute, but Michael Anderson made it 2-2 with a fierce volley on the stroke of half-time following a corner. Neither side could score in the second half, while Andrew Robb missed a glorious chance to give the Knights victory in the second period of extra-time when he failed from close range after a pass down the left by Griffin and an inch-perfect cross from Smith. Penalties converted by Gregoire, Jacob Huigsloot, Smith, Matthew Nowicki and goalkeeper Ben Peter gave Knights a 5-3 win in the shoot-out as only Jo, Adam McKeown and Andrew Clark netted for Eagles. Jamie Vernon fired against the crossbar and Eagles were out of the competition. Comments from Walterpless
