Awesome Pro Goalkeeper High Ball, Distribution, and Cutback Save Session II
Awesome Pro Goalkeeper High Ball, Distribution, and Cutback Save Session II

Building on from the session the day before (you can find the session here: https://youtu.be/A-yvJUYVwYQ ), we focused on high balls and cutback saves, as this was the tendency of what we would see from our opponent. This was a great session prior to hitting the road, so it was important for the keepers to be prepped and ready to go, challenging them but also building confidence as we progressed. Matt was a little more aggressive today in training with his return to play protocol, and he was fully cleared after this session! The Activities! 1. LATERAL SHUFFLES AND VOLLEY – A basic activation exercise to get the feet moving and to get the hands ready. If you have been watching the videos, all of our warm-up activities are very simple and intended to get the hands, feet, and bodies ready for more upbeat progressions. Simple  More Complex is the strategy that we use daily. 2. VOLLEY, LOW SAVE AT GOAL 2, AND RECOVER FOR VOLLEY – A volley to the hands is followed by movement to the near post (mannequin) to cut out a low cross. Goal 2 is from the post to 3-5 yards straight out from the post to the 6-yard box in the 3-goal situation. For those who are unfamiliar with this situation, it happens when the ball is inside the 18-yard box towards the end line, and the keeper has to be prepared to defend goal 1 (the goal), goal 2 (post to 5 yards out), and goal 3 (anything that gets through goal 2 or is played in the air to the far post). The keepers recover after the low save for a volley, simulating a situation where they may have deflected the initial low pass and need to recover to defend the goal. 3. SHOT AND HIGH BALL – A handling exercise that introduces more dynamic movements with the keepers saving a shot before recovering for a high ball that is thrown in. We use the throw here so that we can maximize the time that we have and get the repetitions in that we need, as well as working on the technical aspect of the footwork and handling. We go to service with the feet in a later progression. 4. CUTBACK SAVES – The keepers start at the near post and work across the goal to make a save from a pass that is out of their reach in goal 2. The keepers know that they are not making the save in goal 2 as our main focus is to put ourselves in a situation to make the save off the cutback shot, but decision making can be added to this drill by either passing through goal 2 to another player or cutting it back to the penalty spot for a shot. As this is the day before a game, the intention is to build the keeper’s confidence and to keep the footwork quick and sharp. 5. 2nd SET: MORE CHALLENGING – We do the same drill here but make the shots a little more challenging. Rather than a big smashfest, the intention is still to help the keepers make the save. 6. HIGH BALL, DISTRIBUTION, AND SHOT STOPPING – Here the keepers take a crossed ball and distribute to the opposite side before recovering for a shot from the top of the box. The simulated approach here is that the cross may have been poorly cleared, or the distribution resulted in a quick turnover and a chance at goal for the opposition. Brilliant Pro Goalkeeper Block Save and Shot Stopping Session
Brilliant Pro Goalkeeper Block Save and Shot Stopping Session

Our session today focused on block saves and shot stopping from shots inside the penalty area in preparation for team attacking patterns. The main emphasis was body control through the keeper training, trying to minimize upper body movement when repositioning. Coaching points are dotted throughout the video, and as always, comments are thoughts are most welcomed!

Outstanding Pre-Game Pro GK Session
Outstanding Pre-Game Pro GK Session

This session is the day before a game, and it was an excellent session. A shorter week due to weather, media day, and a Friday afternoon pre-season game against Bethlehem Steel meant that we had to cover a lot in the training session. The breakaway drill is a great way to get the keepers competitive with each other, and can be used as a variety of keeper wars, if you play those games. The focus was evident in all the keepers today, and this session was on point! Thank for sharing!
