Guenther Steiner’s bombshell Haas F1 exit explained
One of F1’s most popular and longest-serving team bosses, Guenther Steiner, has left his role in charge of Haas. It’s a shock move that poses serious questions about the team’s prospects and future. It’s almost unthinkable to imagine Haas without Steiner, as while the team bears the name of its owner Gene Haas, this was really Steiner F1 in all but name. Steiner was the man who made F1’s strangest team set-up possible and became an unexpected star of the Netflix Drive to Survive series. Steiner’s departure, with former director of engineering Ayao Komatsu taking over as team principal, has surprised almost everybody in F1. BUT there has been discontent bubbling away for some time now, and the situation had been coming to a head behind the scenes. Now, Steiner’s gone, and technical director Simone Resta is understood to be out as well. There were frustrations with the way that Haas was run from the very top, and that means eponymous team owner Gene Haas, who has seemingly become apathetic towards his own F1 team and refused to invest in it. Steiner and Haas disagreed on the team’s potential in its current form. While Steiner felt Haas needed steady investment over the next few years, as it had outgrown its unique multi-location, Ferrari-dependent model, Gene Haas believes the team has underachieved and does not need more resources or improved facilities to perform better. Why Daniel Ricciardo is suddenly a serious threat to Sergio Perez in F1
Daniel Ricciardo might be back to his best in Formula 1, and starting to show he could get a Red Bull Racing return after all. Ricciardo was performing at a Red Bull level at the Mexican Grand Prix - literally. He qualified alongside Max Verstappen AND outpaced Sergio Perez, which is as much of a statement as it’s possible to make in an AlphaTauri. ESPECIALLY as Ricciardo followed that up with a strong seventh place in the grand prix, running ahead of several faster cars for a lot of it and passing every test of his racecraft, tyre management and pace, while Perez completely imploded and wiped himself out at the first corner. And this is about much more than a single result. How Red Bull avoided USGP error that got Hamilton and Leclerc excluded
Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton’s best weekend of 2023 ended in the worst possible outcome. Their strongest challenge against Red Bull and Max Verstappen yet ended in a disqualification for a rare breach of a near-30-year-old rule - with Ferrari falling foul of this as well. Red Bull was checked, hadn’t made the same mistake - and therefore Verstappen’s victory stood. Conversely Hamilton was stripped of his second place at the United States GP just a few hours after chasing Verstappen closely in his upgraded Mercedes in easily his and the team’s most competitive showing of the season, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc got excluded from sixth place at the same time. Their cars breached the same technical regulation that refers to the thickness of the plank assembly under the car, with a minimum thickness of 9mm accepted after a competitive session due to wear. Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 comeback with AlphaTauri is one of the big stories of the 2023 season. McLaren’s Formula 1 revival was on shaky ground for the first half of 2023, but its recent upturn in form gives hope to fans of the papaya team that it’s very much back on target.
