In a rematch against the Boston Celtics, the Utah Jazz came out with a great shooting night. Donovan Mitchell scored 28 points and Ricky Rubio scored 20. For Boston, Kyrie Irving got in foul trouble, but overall they weren't making any of their shots. Gordon Hayward looked closer to his old self but isn't quite there yet. Also, if you didn't know already, Rudy Gobert is a defensive force and now has Al Horford's number twice.
Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and the Utah Jazz took it to the Sacramento Kings in a very one sided game. The Utah Jazz look very ready to take on the rest of the league!
The Pacific division in the NBA has become one of the most interesting in the NBA. How will the Warriors, Lakers, Clippers, Suns and Kings end up at the end of the season?
The most interesting division in the Easter Conference is the Atlantic Division. How will the Celtics, Sixers, Raptors, Knicks and Nets end up at the end of the season?
For the Houston Rockets it took a mammoth game from Chris Paul and PJ Tucker to put away the Utah Jazz. Paul managed the Houston offense while also scoring 41 points. His game seems to counter a lot of what the Jazz do on defense. The Jazz do everything they can to force mid range jump shots from opposing players, but that’s where Chris Paul is most comfortable. And then there was PJ Tucker who was 5/7 from three. He hit huge shots and was a major reason the Jazz couldn’t pull away when they would take the lead. But even with Chris Paul and Pj Tucker having career nights, Donovan Mitchell nearly led the Jazz to a victory. He scored 22 points in the third quarter and looked unstoppable in the fourth until he went down with an injury. Rudy Gobert also had a big game and looked like he was beginning to impact the game like he normally does with 5 blocks. It’s a tough loss because it looked like the Jazz may have gained some ground. Overall it’s been an incredible year for the Jazz who’ve had contributions from so many new and old faces. The sky is the limit with this Jazz team and its future.
The Utah Jazz ran away from the Oklahoma City Thunder after a masterful performance from Ricky Rubio. When the Jazz went down by 10 in the first half, Rubio took over and the Jazz never looked back. Very much the bellwether for the Jazz, when Ricky Rubio has a good game the Jazz tend to win. It happened in game two and tonight in game three. But it wasn’t just Rubio’s performance that helped the Jazz win. Rudy Gobert, along with the Jazz transition defense, has taken Russell Westbrook out of what he does best. Almost all of Westbrook’s shots have been difficult and it shows in the box score. Gobert also got Steven Adams in foul trouble for the second game in a row. That foul trouble led to runs that helped pad the Jazz lead. It was also an interesting game to watch as Billy Donovan went small with Patrick Patterson at center. He hit a couple threes, but the Jazz were able to overcome it while keeping Gobert in the game. This bodes very well for future playoff matchups. Joe Ingles showed up big time hitting open threes. It’s clear that putting Paul George on him is important for OKC to win, but when Ricky Rubio and Donovan Mitchell are also scoring, there aren’t a lot of answers for the Thunder. Donovan Mitchell continued his scoring dominance. When his three ball is falling, the Jazz offense becomes explosive. And for a team that bases all of its success on their defense having an explosive scorer makes them a big playoff threat.
Overall the Utah Jazz did a relatively good job against the Oklahoma City Thunder if you don’t count Paul George scoring 36 points on 72% 3pt shooting. But that’s what happens with playoff basketball, stars shine and Paul George shined the brightest. Ricky Rubio struggled from the field, but it felt like he was taking shots he normally doesn’t take. That’s either the Thunder doing a good job on him defensively to get him off his spots, or he was just taking shots he shouldn’t. Either way he ended up shooting 5/18 and will need to do better. Donovan Mitchell was a star in his playoff debut for the Jazz. He scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. It never stops amazing me how good he is so early. One year and he’s the lead dog on a playoff team. He’s a special, special player and the Jazz will need him to keep up his star level play to get a win in Game two. It may not have looked like it, but Rudy Gobert played well. He kept Khal Drogo Steven Adams from having a huge impact while also helping to keep Russell Westbrook to 10 for 25 shooting. If the Jazz want a game two victory, they’ll need to make some major adjustments, starting with Playoff P.
On the third game in four nights, and finishing an 82-game season, the Utah Jazz ran out of gas against the Portland Trail Blazers. Damian Lillard was fantastic for the Blazers scoring 36 points with 10 assists and never let the Jazz get close the entire game. For the Jazz it was a lot of missed shots and turnovers. Donovan Mitchell shot 6/23 and 1/8 from three. Even though he looked a step slow at times, Rudy Gobert managed an impressive 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Jazz now face the Oklahoma City Thunder as the five seed. It’s going to be a lot of fun!
