HEAT TO SIGN DAVON REED TO TRAINING CAMP DEAL ------------------------------ Guard Devon Reed is expected to join the Miami Heat on a training camp deal, Shandel Richardson of The Athletic reports. The 24-year-old has seen action in each of the past two seasons, suiting up for the Phoenix Suns and Indiana Pacers. The former Miami Hurricane selected 32nd overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, has averaged 2.4 points across 31 career games. After the Suns cut Reed last year, he latched on with Indiana as a two-way player, enjoying success for the organization’s G League affiliate in Fort Wayne. While he shot under 40 percent from the field, the Princeton, N.J., native posted solid averages of 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists across 34 contests. Reed suited up for the Warriors in the 2019 Summer League, averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds but his shooting woes continued, evidenced by his 32 percent field goal percentages in four games. Miami has 12 players on guaranteed contracts entering training camp. Report: Cavs Sign Shooting Guard Daniel Hamilton to Exhibit 10 Deal ------------------------------ With less than a month before the start of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ training camp, the team has added one more player to battle for a roster spot on the rebuilding squad. According to Cleveland.com, shooting guard Daniel Hamilton will be signing an Exhibit 10 contract in the next few days. Exhibit 10 deals are unique in that they don’t count against a team’s salary cap. The Cavs also have the option to play players on Exhibit 10 deals in the G League if they don’t make the final roster out of camp. The 24-year-old Hamilton stands 6-foot-7 and played collegiately at the University of Connecticut. He was a second-round draft choice of the Denver Nuggets in the 2016 NBA Draft, the 56th player overall selected, then was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder that same night. During the 2016-17 season, Hamilton played for the Thunder’s G League team, the Oklahoma City Blue. The following year, he played under a two-way contract for the Thunder, seeing action in six NBA games and averaging 2.0 points and 1.3 assists per game. Following the 2017-18 season, he signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Hawks and started in three of the 19 games he appeared in for the team during the 2018-19 campaign. In those contests, he averaged 3.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, before being released in February of this year. Hamilton has connected on 28-of-71 shots from the field in his 25 NBA games for a shooting percentage of 39.4 percent. From beyond the arc, he’s connected on 10-of-28 for a 35.7 percent success rate. Four other players will be competing with Hamilton for one roster spot, including the two other players with Exhibit 10 deals, Marques Bolden and J.P. Macura. The Cavaliers are planning to start the 2019-20 season with a 14-man roster, one under the league maximum, with 19 players set to go to camp. CAVALIERS SIGN JARELL MARTIN TO ONE-YEAR CONTRACT ------------------------------ The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed 25-year-old Jarell Martin to a one-year contract, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. The forward spent last season with the Orlando Magic. Martin’s non-guaranteed deal will allow him to crack the rotation of incoming head coach John Beilein. Martin played sparingly with the Magic in 2018-19 after several years with the Memphis Grizzlies. In the 11 games where Martin logged more than 10 minutes of action last year, he averaged 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Tyler Herro showcases his talent en route to signing Miami Heat contract ------------------------------ LAS VEGAS — Tyler Herro was the first Miami Heat player to take the floor before the Heat played the Orlando Magic. As he warmed up, it looked like Herro was in his own world, processing pregame thoughts by taking different variations of 3-point shots. It's something Heat fans could become accustomed to now that Herro has signed his rookie contract and put trade rumors to rest — for now. Since Herro came into the league as the Heat's 13th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft, the Milwaukee native has been in the middle of multiple moves. On Saturday, Miami acquired All-Star forward Jimmy Butler in a sign and trade, shipping away Josh Richardson and Hassan Whiteside in the process. On Tuesday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Miami was a potential trade partner that appealed to 2017 NBA MVP Russell Westbrook. That type of trade might have included Herro. With his contract now signed, by NBA league rules the Heat cannot trade him for at least 30 days. For his part, Herro took the storm in stride. "You can see something new every day," Herro said of the NBA from Vegas. However, he's facing that bit of uncertainty head-on by taking on the challenge of proving he's a complete basketball player. During Herro's game against the Magic, just the third of four scheduled games in the 2019 NBA Las Vegas Summer League, the Kentucky product did what he's known for, which is the pure penchant to score. He scored 25 points, besting the 23 he dropped on the Chinese World Cup team. This offensive prowess was well-known at Whitnall High School, where he scored 32.9 points per game his senior year in 2017-2018, and garnered attention from Power 5 programs from Wisconsin, where he originally committed, to Arizona and eventually Kentucky.
