Report: Miami Heat Provided Dion Waiters ‘Ample Opportunities’ to Redeem Himself … ------------------------------ The latest drama between the Miami Heat and Dion Waiters entered its latest chapter after the disgruntled guard was suspended for the second time this season. According to a Heat insider, Waiters was given enough chances to redeem himself. In his recent mailbag about the Heat, Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel was asked how he thought the team can resolve the Waiters issue. The Heat have had to endure various incidents involving Waiters since the 2019 offseason. In response, they have elected to practice patience with the mercurial 27-year-old. But it seems like the straw that broke the camel’s back was Waiters’ ingestion of THC-infused gummies during the team’s flight from Phoenix to Los Angeles on Friday. It is unclear whether or not Waiters has played his last game in a Miami uniform. While the team has played relatively well in his absence, his offensive prowess would give the bench a needed boost. The injury bug has also hit the Heat hard, as several of their wing players, namely Justise Winslow, Derrick Jones Jr., and KZ Okpala, are dealing with various injuries. Michigan State plays with ‘broken hearts’ as it supports Cassius Winston … ------------------------------ EAST LANSING -- Zachary Winston’s smile is what left the biggest impression here at the Breslin Center. The younger brother of Spartans point guard Cassius Winston spent plenty of time at Michigan State’s basketball facility over the last four years while visiting his brother. He left a mark as someone who thought about others and made friends feel good. Zachary died on Saturday night after being struck by a train in Albion, where he was a sophomore on the school’s basketball team. A day later, Tom Izzo told his players on Sunday to play with broken hearts as they supported their senior star and remembered the brother who meant so much to him. "He just always had a smile on his face around us, he put smiles on our faces," Spartans senior Kyle Ahrens said of Zachary. "He always knew how to make us feel good, always asking us how we were doing. He was a brother." The tragedy within the Winston family led to a day unlike any other in Michigan State basketball history. Izzo called it the most difficult day of his coaching career. The Spartans coach said he received news of Zachary Winston's death shortly after midnight on Saturday night. He spent the next four hours with Winston and his family at the Spartans' team hotel, talking until nearly morning. Izzo, the Hall of Fame head coach who has a plan to deal with every situation his team comes across, found himself with no way to fix this situation. "That's what we do, we see problems and we try to fix them," Izzo said. "In this case, there was nothing we could say or do that could make anything any better. So all we did was tell Cassius that we're going to support him." Izzo left that conversation doubting that Winston would play in the Spartans' game against Binghamton on Sunday night. Coaches and players told Winston that the decision was completely up to him. He decided to play, and when he did so turned in the 13th double-double of his career, with 17 points and 11 assists in Michigan State's 100-47 win. "The intestinal fortitude he showed to be able to do what he did at the level he did it at is truthfully unbelievable I think, for as close and as big a loss as it was in a short period, was unbelievable," Izzo said. Winston put on that performance with his father, Reg, and brother, Khy, watching from a few rows back in the stands. The emotion was raw throughout, from the Winston brothers sitting next to each other in warm-ups to Ahrens putting his arm around Winston during a pregame moment of silence, sensing that his teammate was having a tough time. "He needs to know that he's not alone," Ahrens said. "We're there for each and every way. He's our brother. He's family." Izzo spent much of the day doubting that Winston would want to play less than 24 hours after learning of Zachary's death. But he started thinking otherwise during the team's early afternoon shootaround. Winston showed up a few minutes into that shootaround alongside Reg and Khy. When the shootaround was over, the three of them remained on the court to help Cassius finish up his shooting. Izzo has seen the Winston family together on plenty of basketball courts, from Breslin to U-D Jesuit High School to the recreation centers in Detroit. Reg taught his sons the game and watched all of them play it through high school and into college. Shaquille O’Neal Says Damian Lillard Beef Was ‘Just For Fun’ … ------------------------------ Beef? What beef? A month after releasing a diss track aimed at fellow NBA star Damian Lillard, Shaquille O’Neal says he’s already moved on. “The thing that went on for me and him was just for fun,” Shaq declared at this week’s “NBA on TNT American Express Road Show” event in Los Angeles. “I think he’s really, really good and he’s very talented. We had fun.” O’Neal’s comments come a month after posting a song seemingly directed at Lillard, the Portland Trail Blazer-cum-rapper Dame D.O.L.L.A., who claimed in a recent interview that he had more flow than Shaq Fu. Lillard responded days later with his own diss track, titled “Reign Reign Go Away,” digging at Shaq with references to Kobe Bryant, Icy Hot and yes, his appearances on TNT; in an interview with Rolling Stone, Lillard said he penned “Reign Reign Go Away” in 45 minutes, and its follow-up diss track, “I Rest My Case,” in 20. But Shaq seems to have taken the back-and-forth in stride, if not exactly ready to back down. “We all come from the same place,” O’Neal says, diplomatically. “My thing is, if you say you’re better than me, I accept the challenge. If he says ‘I look better than you,’ then okay, I gotta hit the gym and work out; if he says ‘My shoes are whiter than yours,’ then I gotta go to the store and pick out a better pair. Other people take that stuff personally but I don’t,” he explains. “If you challenge me, I’ll step up to the challenge.” Though the feud appears to have simmered down, don’t expect Shaq and Lillard to get together and talk it out Taylor Swift and Katy Perry-style anytime soon. “We are competitors, we don’t pick people’s brains,” he says, adding: “[Lillard] doesn’t need my advice.” Lillard similarly told Rolling Stone, “My battle rap days are over.” The D.O.L.L.A.-dunking track Shaq posted to Instagram has already amassed almost 200,000 views, and it’s sparked renewed interest – whether intentionally or ironically – in the 47-year-old’s rap career. Boston Celtics upgrade Max Strus, sign rookie to two-year partially-guaranteed contract … ------------------------------ The Boston Celtics have upgraded the contract of rookie wing Max Struss, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. This is one of two scenarios. 1: The Celtics have seen enough of Strus that they feel comfortable giving him a bigger role on this team. He’s got a good reputation as a shooter and the partially guaranteed money is a no bigger commitment than the two-way deal. The move opens up the two-way deal for either Javonte Green or Tacko Fall. Or... 2: The Celtics have guaranteed him about $450,000 as a make good in preparation for cutting him. It’s a little more than they would have paid him for the full year as a two-way player assuming he maxed out his NBA commitment. They committed the two-way deal really early, and at this point, he’s missing out on a chance to make an NBA roster. If the Celtics are planning on cutting him, doing it now without any money would really put him in a horrible situation. By giving him a guaranteed payout, the Celtics can cut him without really reneging on any financial commitment and Strus can spend a year overseas somewhere playing ball and he can try to hook on with an NBA team later in the season or over the summer. He can also agree to a G-League deal with the Red Claws, essentially keeping him in the system if he wants to stick around. Either way, this move is the beginning of the roster maneuvering for the Celtics. Daryl Macon signs with Miami Heat ------------------------------ The Miami Heat have signed Daryl Macon, according to a news release from the team. Terms of the deal were not made public. Macon, a Little Rock native, and former Razorback, split last season between Dallas and the Mavericks' G-League team. He spent the 2018 NBA Summer League with the Heat, appearing in seven games.
