Transfers Chaundee Brown (Wake Forest) and Mike Smith (Columbia) impressed in Michigan Basketball's season opener win against the BGSU Falcons 96-82. After only 1 point in the first half, Brown warmed up from beyond the 3-point line, putting up 18 second-half points to continue to put Michigan ahead of the Falcons. Mike Smith showed to be a capable replacement of Zavier Simpson, at least offensively. He was consistently driving to the basket, dishing out passes nicely and finishing around the basket himself at an impressive rate. He posted 8 assists to only 1 turnover as the clear starting PG. True freshman 7'2 center Hunter Dickinson also had himself a fantastic debut, showing off elite passing ability from the block and some advanced post-up moves near the basket. Household names Franz Wagner & Isaiah Livers performed admirably, with Livers shining early and Wagner displaying some added strength from the offseason with a few nice finishes. Michigan starts the season 1-0 and takes on Oakland on Sunday, which should be a bit of an easier match-up than what the Wolverines faced on Wednesday night. Michigan's offense was definitely not fun against Wisconsin. Let's dive into the "Why". There are 3 stat lines to look at from the box score to properly tell the story of the Michigan Wolverine defense against the Spartans: Rocky Lombardi - 17/32 for 323 yards, 3 TDs to 0 INTs Ricky White - 8 receptions for 196 yards and 1 TD 10 penalties for 86 yards Almost half of Lombardi’s completions went to the true freshman Ricky White, as he was matched up against Gray / Perry pretty much the entire game. It did not go well. If it wasn’t the corners getting beat, there were a myriad of penalties that didn’t help, either. Whether it was one of the 4 defensive holding or defensive pass interference or the multiple offsides penalties, the defense assisted in giving Michigan State an easy out on 3rd downs, consistently. The officiating left a lot to be desired in this game. No, it did NOT determine the outcome of this game, by any means, but it was sloppy all around. In this game, I cover each of the major penalties in this game, their impact, and whether or not I thought they were accurate calls. 00:00 Intro 01:13 1 DPI 02:47 2 Leaping (Missed) 04:24 3 Def Holding 06:23 4 Disconcerting Signals 07:55 5 DPI 09:45 6 Offsides 11:17 7 Blindside Block 12:19 8 Blindside Block 14:01 9 Missed Review 15:49 10 DPI (Missed?) 17:34 11 False Start 18:49 12 Def Holding 20:53 13 Offsides 22:01 14 DPI (Missed) 24:09 15 Missed Review 26:22 16 Missed Review 28:00 17 Clipping Episode 1 (Minnesota) videos: https://youtu.be/INhBVeBo4Ew https://youtu.be/O2AlbOdXuK4 https://youtu.be/SfrC1jkZZpw Follow us on Twitter: @MaizenBrew @StephenToski This footage does not belong to me and is the property of FOX and being used for educational/informational purposes only
