Seven Top-25 teams are in action on Wednesday, December 8th, highlighted by Indiana vs. Wisconsin, UCONN vs. West Virginia, and Utah State vs. BYU. On Tuesday, December 7th, the college basketball schedule is highlighted by the Jimmy V Classic from Madison Square Garden in New York City. The annual Jimmy V Classic tips off on Tuesday, with Tennessee and Texas Tech in the first game of the night. Texas Tech has played a very lax schedule so far this season, playing only one team that could remotely make the tournament, and losing that game. They are not proven at all, and playing a Tennessee team that demolished UNC just a couple of weeks ago is going to be a tough task. The Vols did fall to Villanova by double digits, but they rebounded from that loss with the win over North Carolina. The night cap of the Classic is Villanova vs. Syracuse. Villanova has played an extremely tough schedule to start the season, with games against UCLA, Tennessee, and Purdue. They lost in overtime to UCLA, and fell by six to Purdue. Syracuse is a team that no one has quite figured out yet. They haven’t even figured out who they are as a team, with a home loss to Colgate by 15-points and giving up 100 points. They are a very high scoring team this year, averaging 80.8 ppg. They also lost to VCU, then fell to Auburn by 21. But they have defeated Arizona State, Indiana, and Florida State in the last two weeks. Monday, December 6th is a light schedule in college basketball, but there are still games that we are all looking forward to. Illinois was one of the most talked about teams in preseason, with a lot of returning players, and solid coaching, but they have had a really rough start to their season, and with conference play beginning, this is do or die time for the Illini and their postseason aspirations. After losing back-to-back games to Marquette and Cincinnati, Illinois has won three in a row, most recently a win over Notre Dame. Iowa is the highest scoring team in all of college basketball, and they are up next for Illinois. With a matchup later in the week against Arizona, this is a very important week if they want to get back in the top 25. The only other ranked teams in action on Monday are Houston taking on Alcorn State, and Florida against Texas Southern. Texas Southern is a very interesting team. Every year they put together an extremely tough non-conference schedule, against mostly Top 25 teams. This season they have played Oregon, Saint Mary’s, Washington, Air Force, NC State, BYU, and Louisiana Tech. They still have Florida, Cincinnati, and TCU to go. But, every year they win the SWAC with an overall losing record, and then get put into the First Four against another 16-seed.
