GAME HIGHLIGHTS 4.16.22 | Oakland Roots SC vs. Loudoun United FC

Against DC United’s reserve team on Saturday night at Laney College, the Oakland Roots scored four goals in its first victory of the 2022 season. Captain and center back Emrah Klimenta scored the opener in the first half and the Roots looked comfortable in possession and in defense. When the game opened up in the second half the Roots attack came alive, scoring three goals in 23 minutes. The Roots scored more goals against Loudoun tonight than Loudoun has scored all season before this match. Venezia FC loanee Óttar Magnús Kalsson scored a penalty kick early in the second half and Juan Azocar finished off a sweeping team move 15 minutes later. Wide man Edgardo Rito added one of his own in the 76th minute. Loudoun scored a consolation goal five minutes later but it was too little too late for the traveling team. The Roots look to continue their winning form against the El Paso Locomotive on April 23rd. They return to Laney College on April 30th when they face off against the Colorado Switchbacks.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 4.13.22 | Oakland Roots SC vs. San Diego Loyal

It was a chilly evening at Laney College but the fans were out in the thousands on Wednesday $1 Beer Night to watch their Roots take on the Landon Donovan-coached San Diego Loyal. The first half was a tight contest as both sides were locked in battle and neither could find the net. Just seven minutes into the second half, the Roots were caught in their own box with the ball and the Loyal pounced instantly to score the game’s opening goal. Things took a turn for the worse in the 64th minute when Tarek Morad brought down a counter-attacking Loyal forward. He was sent off for his second yellow card offense and the Roots were reduced to ten men for the remainder of the match. The Roots fought hard and finally found a breakthrough in the 86’ through Juan Azocar. Edgardo Rito won a 50/50 ball and played it out to Lindo Mfeka who swung in a cross to Azocar who buried his chance with authority. The Loyal scored off a late corner and seemed to have secured the three points, but in the last minute of stoppage time, Roots center back Emrah Klimenta fired in a cross that found the head of Ottar Magnus Karlsson who beat the keeper from point blank range. Roots 2, Loyal 2. His header was the last action of the game. The Roots continue their homestand when they face off against Loudon United this Saturday night.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 3.26.22 | Oakland Roots SC vs. Monterey Bay F.C.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS 3.26.22 | Oakland Roots SC vs. Monterey Bay F.C.

On a chilly Saturday night at Laney College, the Roots lost to its new Norcal rival, Monterey Bay F.C., 3-2. It was the Roots’ first home game of the season after dropping its first two road matches. Monterey struck first in the 8th minute when striker Seku Conneh held the ball up well in the Roots box and teed it up to Chase Boone who buried the finish. Oakland recovered well though, resilient in defense and creating a couple excellent opportunities from set pieces. Shortly before halftime, Ottar Magnus Karlsson won a penalty just inside the Monterey box. The Icelandic, on loan from Serie A side Venezia, did a cheeky stutter step before dispatching the penalty with gusto and the first half ended a goal apiece. Just four minutes after the start of the second half the Roots broke the deadlock. A long ball out to wideman Edgardo Rito caught Monterey out and the Venezuelan found Karlsson at the near post with a well-placed pass. Karlsson, for his second of the game, swept the ball neatly into the corner. Roots 2, Monterey 1. Monterey equalized in the 68th minute from a corner; it was Boone again on the scoresheet who stabbed home a loose ball in the box. The next twenty minutes saw both teams seek a winner as the game swung from one half to the other, though Oakland had the better chances. In the 90’ minute Monterey found the winner on a freekick that was headed back across the goal from the far post. Center back Hugh Roberts nodded it home, dealing the Roots its third consecutive loss of the season.

Game Highlights: Oakland Roots SC vs. Orange County SC - Western Conference Semifinals

Oakland Roots traveled down to Southern California for the Western Conference Semifinal and their fifth game against Orange County SC in the 2021 season. Roots had lost the four previous meetings but coming off their win against the top seed in the Mountain Division last week, anything is possible. Both sides played somewhat conservative in the first half for fear of conceding the opening goal. Chances were slim, but Memo Diaz had a great strike in the thirtieth minute that was just off target. Orange County led in possession going into the half, certainly something Head Coach Jordan Ferrell would look to change to start the second half. The second half was a much different story as Roots came out looking to control the game and found themselves constantly in the attacking third and more than doubling their shots on goal. This forced Orange County to sit back and play more conservatively, midway through the half they looked to bring on some more offensive firepower but it wasn’t enough against the strong defensive front of Oakland. Even with four minutes of stoppage time, both teams were unable to find the game-changing goal, forcing the Western Conference Semifinal into extra time. The first half of stoppage saw both teams doing their best to keep the pressure up and attack the ball. In the 97th minute the game saw its first yellow card of the game off a tackle from Akeem Ward. The intensity continued to grow and just a few minutes later tempers flared as both Roots and Orange County players got into a short shoving match after a foul from Orange County. Fatigue started to set in at the start of the second half of extra time as the teams exchanged fouls and free kicks without much cohesion from either side. After 120 minutes of play, the season was on the line with a penalty shootout. This was to be the first penalty shootout in Oakland Roots history. Yohannes Harish was subbed on with just seconds left to play in extra time, surely he was to be one of the selected few to take a kick. Roots were first to shoot, with Tarek Morad easily finding the back of the net. On their next turn, Jeremy Bokila did the same. Throughout the shootout, goalkeeper Paul Blanchette would guess the correct side but was unable to come up with a stop. Veteran Joseph Nane, as well as Ariel Mbumba and Yohannes Harish all would score, bringing things to sudden death. Akeem Ward took the sixth shot and was blocked by OC goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky. OC striker Ronaldo Damus was up next, he pulled a classic stutter step but was blocked by Paul Blanchette. Unfortunately Blanchette was called for coming off his line too early. On the rekick, Damus would score, ending the Roots inaugural season in the USL Championship.

Game Highlights: Oakland Roots vs. Sporting Kansas City II

Oakland Roots have punched their ticket to the 2021 Championship Playoffs on the final day of the regular season after a win over Sporting Kansas City II. Oakland Roots returned home Saturday to host Sporting KC II in front of a sold out crowd for their final home game of the 2021 season. Roots needed a win as well as a loss or a tie from LA Galaxy II to secure their spot in the postseason. Less than three minutes in, Chuy Enriquez found the back of the net off a poor save attempt from KC goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. Already on the board, Roots looked to maintain possession and keep a strong defensive front. They carried the lead into halftime as KC had yet to register a single shot on target. To start the second half Roots followed a similar formula of controlling possession and not allowing KC to penetrate the attacking third. An early second half injury to Roots captain Wal Fall brought Ariel Mbumba into the game to keep a strong midfield presence. Late into the game, the match got a lot more physical with two Roots players earning yellow cards. Sporting KC tried their best to up the attack but it wasn’t enough as Roots cruised to victory. With the Roots win and a loss from LA Galaxy II, Roots will travel to El Paso to face the Locomotive in the first round of the playoffs on Friday, November 5th.

Game Highlights: Oakland Roots SC vs. Sac Republic FC

It was a chilly Wednesday night in Oakland but the USL Norcal rivalry brought plenty of heat as the Roots took down Sac Republic 2-1 in a thrilling match at Laney College. The Roots struck first in the 10th minute when midfield sentinel Wal Fall played a superbly disguised through ball down the middle of the park to Quincy Amarikwa who neatly tucked the ball away. It was the Bakersfield, Calif. native’s second goal in just as many games. Oakland pushed to double their lead but it took last ditch tackles from Montenegrin center back Emrah Klimenta and right back Memo Diaz to keep the Republic at bay. Just past the half hour mark, Sacramento capitalized on a scrum in the box and Dariusz Formella stabbed the ball home to tie the game one apiece. The second half started with a frenetic energy as the fouls flew in and the referee struggled to maintain his control on the match. Momentum shifted back and forth until the 63rd minute when Roots holding midfielder Matias Fissore received the ball outside the right corner of Sac Republic’s box and swung in a beautiful cross that found the head of Klimenta, who angled his header into the upper corner. Roots up, 2-1. Both squads continued to battle but Oakland held on, leapfrogging Sacramento in the standings and getting closer to the much-coveted fourth playoff spot in the process.

Game Highlights: Oakland Roots SC vs. San Diego Loyal

Oakland Roots played host to San Diego Loyal for the second time in less than two weeks. This time being at their secondary venue of Las Positas College in Livermore for what would be the last of their ‘Roots Road Trips’ for the season. The midfield saw the return of Wal Fall and José Hernandez to the starting lineup. Only six minutes into the game, Roots found the back of the net off a Goal of the Year candidate strike from forward Johnny Roriguez for his second of the year. From there Roots continued to press the Loyal despite the visitors controlling possession in the first half. Then in stoppage time Collin Martin scored for the Loyal off a volley from outside the 18 to put the teams level going into the half. Head Coach Jordan Ferrell made a switch at the half, bringing in recently-signed midfielder Joseph Nane for Wal Fall. The team continued to press and play aggressively, this led to a tackle in San Diego’s box in the 62nd minute, leading to a penalty kick. José Hernandez took the kick and scored despite San Diego’s Austin Guerrero getting a piece of it. From there the match got more intense with both teams receiving multiple yellow cards, a total of eight for the game. The center referee gave a total of five minutes of stoppage time to end the game but that still was not enough for San Diego to find their second equalizer. With the win, Roots now hold the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division. They travel to Irvine this Saturday, 9/25 to face Orange County SC.

Game Highlights: Oakland Roots SC vs. Tacoma Defiance

Oakland Roots played host to Tacoma Defiance Wednesday night for their second to last game at their alternate venue at Las Positas College in Livermore, California. Having split their first two meetings, with the most recent being a 3-1 win in late August, the game had major playoff indications with Tacoma holding the last playoff spot and Roots only being 6 points behind them. Roots got on the scorecard early with a goal from Lindo Mfeka in the 10th minute, his first of the season. From there they controlled possession for the majority of the half until Tacoma’s Ray Serrano netted the equalizer in the 32nd minute. With the game again level, the offense pushed again more into the attacking third and Wal Fall scored his fourth goal of the season off a beautiful ball from Mfeka in the 40th to put Roots back up going into the half. The squad got off to a hot start in the second half with Lindo Mfeka scoring his second goal in the 52nd minute. Roots continued to press Tacoma, constantly finding themselves in the attacking third for the rest of the game. Mfeka nearly had a hat trick with an attempt that went wide. With 20 minutes left in the game, Head Coach Jordan Ferrell made some defensive moves to ensure the win, bringing in Tarn Weir and Max Ornstil for Mfeka and Mbumba to close out the game. Roots are now sitting in fifth place and only three points back from the fourth playoff spot. They host LA Galaxy II this Saturday, 9/18 for Climate Night at Laney College.
