11,222 fans - the largest crowd in the history of Toledo hockey - packed the Toledo Mud Hens ballpark on Saturday for the first ever ECHL outdoor game. The K-Wings dropped the Walleye with a late goal to take the win, 2-1. Toledo now has an overall record of 19-5-2-1 on the season and is 8-3-2-1 at home. A physical start to the game entertained the vocal fans until Kalamazoo forward Ludwig Blomstrand scored the first goal of the game at 19:41 of the first. Tyler Barnes (13th) tied the game at a goal when he one-timed a Shane Berschbach pass into the net just 1:06 in the second period. The game remained tied for the next 36 minutes of game play. Matt Caria wristed a shot past Toledo goaltender Jeff Lerg with 3:23 left in the third period to give Kalamazoo the win.
The Toledo Walleye were only able to strike twice tonight as they lost Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarter Finals to the Cincinnati Cyclones 5-2 at the Huntington Center on Saturday night. Cincinnati took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, with play shifting to Cincinnati this coming week. Toledo and Cincinnati battled to a scoreless first period with both goaltenders making great saves. The Walleye put 10 shots on Michael Houser and had several great scoring chances. Walleye goaltender Kent Simpson remained solid in net, stopping the six Cincinnati shots he faced. The Cyclones would then open the scoring 1:31 into the second period after David Pacan placed a shot over the catching glove of Simpson. Taylor Ellington put the Cyclones up 2-0 after he scored a power play goal at the 19:46 mark of the middle period. Simpson made several great saves throughout the period, including a sliding over and stopping a Trevor Lewis backdoor one-timer. Toledo was out shot 18-5 in the second period. Cincinnati struck three times in the third period to push them to a 5-0 lead. Pacan picked up the first goal early in the period on the power play. Matt Smyth then scored at the 7:40 mark of the third also on the power play. Pacan then scored his third goal of the game at 9:16 of the final period to pick up a hat trick. Goaltender Jordan Pearce would then take over in goal for Simpson. Toledo was finally able to solve Houser, spoiling his shutout bid. Joey Martin sent a puck in along the ice, getting Toledo on the board at the 11:36 mark of the third period. Trevor Parkes assisted on the goal for the Walleye.
