Sydney United 58 FC 'pipped' Sutherland Sharks and Bonnyrigg White Eagles to secure the 2013 Premiership on the final day of the regular season. The Reds were ruthless in its clash against Blacktown Spartans as both the Sharks and White Eagles fell to Rockdale City and Marconi Stallions respectively. Elsewhere, Blacktown City FC saw its finals charge ended by Manly United FC -- the Northern Beaches side held Mark Crittenden's men to a draw, meanwhile APIA-Leichhardt Tigers avoided the wooden spoon with a win at Sydney Olympic. On the South Coast, the Wolves and Central Coast Mariners Academy shared the spoils with the Wolves finishing the season in bottom-spot on the ladder.
Bonnyrigg White Eagles returned to the top of the League ladder with a workmanlike performance at Marconi Stallions on Sunday, leaving Sutherland Sharks in second after the latter was held to a 2-2 draw by Rockdale City. Elsewhere, Sydney Olympic made it consecutive wins with a big three-pointer against APIA-Leichhardt Tigers, meanwhile Sydney United 58 FC was held at home by Blacktown Spartans. Central Coast Mariners Academy secured its first win of the season with a late, dramatic, show against South Coast Wolves -- spearheaded by Chris Payne who netted four goals in Round 11 action this weekend.
Sutherland Sharks clinched the 2012 Waratah Cup title with a phenomenal showing in the showpiece event at Cromer Park on Sunday against APIA-Leichhardt Tigers. Played with their foot on the accelerator from the opening exchanges, the Sharks gave the Tigers very little in a dominant display that saw Robbie Stanton's men score four goals in the 4-1 romp. Chris Price and Matt Bailey each scored for Sutherland in the opening half -- in almost identical fashion -- before the Sharks added another two goals in a fine second-half showing courtesy of Blake Powell and Panni Nikas. The Tigers consolation arrived via Adel El Jamal. Watch the entire highlights as well as the official presentation and full time interviews from both the Sutherland Sharks and APIA Leichhardt Tigers contingent.
Marconi Stallions and Sydney Olympic were the big movers in Round 13 as the former NSL giants moved into fourth and fifth spots on the League ladder respectively. The Stallions got one-up over stern rival APIA-Leichhardt Tigers, meanwhile the Blues scored a much needed win in the 2011 grand-final replay. At the top of the ladder, Bonnyrigg White Eagles were held at Seymour Shaw by Sutherland Sharks; South Coast Wolves made the most of the White Eagles slip-up with a win at Manly United FC, meanwhile Blacktown City were stunned at home by Rockdale City Suns. At the bottom of the ladder, APIA-Leichhardt Tigers, Manly United FC and Parramatta FC all failed to pick up any points in Round 13.
Sutherland Sharks continue to lead the way in the NSW Premier League with a one-point lead over Sydney United and Sydney Olympic on the League ladder after Easter weekend action -- the Reds with a match in hand. The Sharks were forced to dig deep on Good Friday and come from behind to share the spoils at Lambert Park against A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers. Trailing 1-0 after 9' minutes, following Anthony Hartshorn's well taken header from a Stephen Kayes cross, the Sharks drew level in the 29' minute. Panni Nikas combined well with Chris Price to send the latter through on goal as Price kept his cool to round goalkeeper Stefan Giglio before slotting home.
Incessant rain across the state on Saturday disrupted Round 4 action in the NSW Premier League with two matches re-scheduled due to waterlogged pitches. Both the Rockdale City Suns -- Marconi Stallions and Bonnyrigg White Eagles -- Sydney United matches were cancelled, with Football NSW to announce new dates for these fixtures in the coming week.
Marconi Stallions claimed their first piece of silverware since the 1995/96 NSL season with a dramatic penalty-shootout victory over Spirit FC. Both sides fought tooth and nail throughout 120' minutes of goalless football, as the penalty-shootout was required to assign the 2010 McDonald's Cup trophy. The gallant Super League side overturned a rather nervy first-half to match their more fancied opponent until the very end. However, Stallions goalkeeper Jose Bello Amigo proved to be the difference, saving two Spirit FC penalties for the Stallions, as Christopher Nunes drove the winner into the top left-hand corner to seal the deal for the Bossley Park outfit.
