How Did Zlatan Ibrahimovic Play 6 Months W/ Torn ACL? Expert Explains

AC Milan Serie A football injury expert Dr. Raj, DPT explains how Zlatan Ibrahimovic played six months with a fully ruptured ACL in his left knee, other examples, and potential consequences of that decision | How Did Zlatan Ibrahimovic Play Six Months With No ACL? Expert Explains | AC Milan Serie A football injury analysis For reference, I’m a DPT (Doctor of Physio), sports scientist, researcher, youth football (soccer) coach, mindfulness enthusiast and owner of 3CB Performance —providing sports medicine, performance, and mindfulness services online and in-person at clinics in West LA and Valencia, CA. Lets start with how that’s even possible. How’s it possible? Nearly all elite athletes who rupture an ACL will have surgery - which Zlatan has undergone - but some are better able to cope without one. This key distinction between “copers” and “non-copers” is the level of instability in the knee following the ACL rupture. Comparison examples I couldn’t come up with other football-specific examples but two others are quarterback Phillip Rivers of the NFL’s San Diego Chargers who played in a playoff game six days after an ACL rupture and meniscus damage and even more incredibly, NCAA 3-time college champion wrestler Spencer Lee of Iowa college who tore his right ACL in the 2019 final and then in 2021, he ruptured his left ACL during the season, never had it repaired, and went on to win his 3rd title. The functional & stability demands in wrestling are incredibly high - much higher than football. It’s an incredible story and accomplishment. In-season management Zlatan mentioned numerous by-products of his decision over the course of the six months. He barely trained with the team to load manage, more than 20 injections, had fluid (swelling) drained weekly, took painkillers daily, and had problems sleeping due to the pain. He also had a meniscus tear which may have occurred at the time of the initial injury or due to ongoing instability in the knee. Long-term consequences The key long-term consequence is an increase for osteoarthritis in the knee and generalized pain and dysfunction. Ongoing commitment to strength and fitness - beyond just his rehab and career - will be key for Zlatan to limit that risk and symptoms. Competitor mentality Zlatan’s competitive spirit and drive is top of the top and this is yet another example of what elite athletes will put themselves through for team and sport. Only time will tell if it’s worth it or not - would love to hear his answer in 10-15 years - but for now, he can take pride in what he sacrificed for the team and being part of AC Milan’s first Serie A title in 11 years.

Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood suffered this gruesome looking right leg injury vs West Ham United when his foot got caught underneath & rotated outwards. The likely injury Based on the video & photo evidence, this is likely an ankle-fracture dislocation. Medical response The club medical staff quickly came out onto the pitch and relocated & splinted the ankle. That quick response is key because it limits the stress on the anatomy. Key checks Speaking of anatomy, the first priority with these injuries is to assess nerve & blood vessel (arteries & veins) damage. Then, you’re checking for the extent of other damage including bone fractures, ligaments and cartilage. Surgery The latter may only fully reveal itself during surgery. The goal is to fully reduce and stabilize the injury. Return timeline In the case of no nerve or blood vessel damage, the return timeline averages around 6 months. The variance depends on the extent of that damage. Outcomes Similarly, if there’s no nerve or blood vessel damage, the outcomes are typically good. The rehab is certainly grueling and Ashley will likely face long-term pain & discomfort in that ankle but he can make it back, even at 32 years old. Key positive A key positive - and I can’t emphasize this enough - will be mentality & a growth mindset approach. Westwood was already smiling & in relatively good spirits while being stretchered off. This is where age & perspective can give a massive boost to reinforce that mindset. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Lakers Film Study: Did They Find Their “Death Lineup” Vs Cleveland!?
Lakers Film Study: Did They Find Their “Death Lineup” Vs Cleveland!?

Los Angeles Lakers expert and youth coach Raj breaks down Lakers film on their win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on 3.21.22, specifically the lineup they used to close the game, why it was so effective, and how the potential return of Anthony Davis would hyper charge it even further |NBA Film Study: Did The Lakers Find Their “Death Lineup” Vs Cleveland!? | Los Angeles Lakers Film Study For reference, I’m a youth basketball coach, movement and mechanics coach, sports scientist, DPT (doctor of physio), strength and conditioning coach, researcher, mindfulness clinician and owner of 3CB Performance —providing sports medicine, performance, and mindfulness services online and in-person at clinics in West LA and Valencia, CA. The Los Angeles Lakers surged past the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night in Cleveland for arguably their most impressive W of the season. In the closing 5 minutes, the team used a lineup of Russell Westbrook - Austin Reaves - LeBron James - Wenyen Gabriel - Stanley Johnson that was a +85.7 net rating to blow the game out. Lets go through the film to determine what made this lineup so effective. Firstly, the lineup puts additional defensive playmakers on the floor. Watch here how Stanley reads in the inbounds and knifes in for this steal and bucket - and this is coming out of a Cavs timeout so he blows up their entire ATO. Here Wenye n Gabriel completely negates Evan Mobley in a 1v1 and forces the turnover. Both players raise the defensive floor for the team, something the Lakers have badly needed this season. The Lakers’ team D has been filled with blown assignments and players on different pages. This lineup was the antithesis of that. Here the team blitzes Darius Garland with Russell Westbrook - who points out the rotation to LeBron on the backside, Austin tags and recovers while Bron plays free safety in a 1v2 position reading Garland’s pass, Gabriel backs off and then the back 3 all communicate to coordinate their rotation resulting in a contested 3 for a 25% shooter in Christian Okoro (he makes it but you live with that shot). Here’s another example, again on a blitz of Garland. Take note of the anticipation, recovery, and coordinated rotations with multiple efforts here - resulting in a turnover into a fast break and what should’ve been an and-1 dunk for Lebron. Offensively there’s an added layer of rim pressure with the athleticism and length of Johnson and Gabriel who can capitalize on LeBron and Russ attacking and kicking. There’s also 2ndary decision-makers on the floor in Reaves & Johnson who can create plays. Here Reaves attacks after Westbrook collapses the D and reads the rotation astutely to find a wide open Stanley Johnson who cans the 3. Last but not least, this lineup simply has multiple guys who won’t get punked - they play with effort and increase the margins. This sequence is case in point as after a LeBron miss, Gabriel uses his height & strength advantage to gain the extra possession. On the ensuing possession, LeBron’s unable to convert twice (fouled on the first shot) but Stanley knifes in for the rebound to gain a 4th possession for the team. These are winning plays that add up over the course of a game. Of course this lineup won’t maintain the massive net rating but it highlights key attributes and complementary profiles that can maximize this current Lakers roster. The potential addition of Anthony Davis and his more than stellar fit into this style of lineup may be the Lakers’ chance to salvage this season and make any sort of noise in the post-season (provided they make it).
