Despite an engrossing final day at Canterbury, Northamptonshire’s LV= Insurance County Championship fixture ended in a draw with players bumping fists shortly before 5pm. An obdurate Adam Rossington eventually steered the visitors to safety with an unbeaten 59, but only after a brave declaration by the home side on their overnight score of 335 for five, when they were still 62 runs behind. Nathan Gilchrist took three for 57 and Darren Stevens two for 42 but the game began to drift away in the final session, Northamptonshire finishing on 184 for eight declared.
Ollie Robinson hit a century and claimed the 100th catch of his career as Kent fought back on day three of their LV= Insurance County Championship match with Northamptonshire at Canterbury. The wicketkeeper hit 120 from 119 balls, including 16 fours and three sixes as Kent reached 330 for five in reply to Northamptonshire’s 392 all out, a deficit of 62. Jordan Cox was Kent’s next highest scorer with 90 and Joe Denly made 63. Simon Kerrigan took two for 80 as Northamptonshire took a cluster of late wickets in a dramatic final hour, but barring a sporting declaration tomorrow the match is almost certain to end as a draw.
Emilio Gay’s maiden first-class century put Northamptonshire in control after Day One of their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Canterbury. Gay struck 15 boundaries and a six on his way to 101, while Luke Procter made 81 and Ricardo Vasconcelos 66 as Northamptonshire dominated the majority of the opening day.
Northamptonshire took just 65 minutes to beat Sussex by seven wickets to register their third victory in Group Three of the LV=Insurance County Championship at The 1st Central County Ground. In doing so they made it a double over Sussex, having beaten them by an innings and 120 runs in Northampton earlier in the month. At the start of play on the last day the main question was whether the match would survive until lunch. But lunch was still a long way away when Northamptonshire crossed the line, mainly because of an aggressive and unbeaten 47 from 43 balls from Saif Zaib, who had shown his liking for the Sussex bowling in the earlier match, but also because of Keogh, who made 60 not out from 112 deliveries.
A fourteenth first-class five wicket haul for Simon Kerrigan helped Northamptonshire close in on victory against Sussex at Hove. Left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan continued his good start to the season with five for 70 and despite Tom Haines’ second hundred of the season Sussex were bowled out for 298 in their second innings. That left Northamptonshire more than four sessions to score 218 and they were 131 for two at stumps on day three, needing another 87.
Veteran Gareth Berg made crucial contributions with bat and ball to leave Northamptonshire well placed to record their second LV= County Championship win of the season against Sussex. After conceding a first-innings deficit of 81, Sussex all but cleared their arrears for the loss of one wicket before Northamptonshire wrestled back the initiative after tea on the second day at Hove. Left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan picked up Stiaan van Zyl (17) and Travis Head (0) in successive overs as the runs dried up and when Tom Clark (13) followed Berg’s away-swinger and was held at third slip, Sussex were effectively 17 for four. But opener Tom Haines dug in with an unbeaten 64 and Ben Brown (34 not out) counter-attacked in the last hour as they added 44 for the fifth wicket. Sussex closed on 142 for four, a lead of 61.
Northamptonshire seamer Ben Sanderson took the third five-wicket haul in his last four innings before Sussex fought back on the first day of their LV=County Championship match at Hove. The 32-year-old has 25 wickets this season – 15 of them against Sussex – after he took five for 45 in Sussex’s 175. Northamptonshire were 91 for four at stumps.
An excellent bowling display from Tom Taylor and Simon Kerrigan ensured the visitors finished the opening day in charge of their LV= County Championship match against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford.
