Jack Leaning and Grant Stewart scored contrasting half-centuries as Kent piled on the runs on a rain-affected day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Northamptonshire. Captain Leaning ground his way to a 120-ball fifty to build on the work of Ben Compton, who ended with 140, and Zak Crawley and Daniel Bell-Drummond’s half-centuries. On the other hand, Stewart was given a licence and used it to bash five sixes in 34 deliveries on his route to the milestone – before he ended up on 61 – as Kent declared on 519 for nine. All-rounder Stewart and Darren Stevens then made early in-roads by displacing Ben Curran and Emilio Gay as Northamptonshire ended the day on 21 for two – 498 runs behind.

Northamptonshire's bowlers worked hard on the opening day against Kent but found little reward. All eyes were on Crawley after Ricardo Vasconcelos had put Kent in after heavy overnight rain saw both Captains eye up a green tinged wicket. After a strong appeal from the opening ball of the match and an edge falling inches short of second slip there was little assistance on offer for the bowlers.

Ricardo Vasconcelos and Will Young racked up a record opening stand after Northamptonshire were put in by Warwickshire in their LV=Insurance County Championship match at Edgbaston. The openers stayed together until after tea to add 287 in 64.2 overs and lift their side towards a commanding 372 for two at the close of the first day. Vasconcelos stroked 156 (197 balls, 21 fours, two sixes) before falling to the second ball after tea. New Zealand batter Young scored a polished 134 (230 balls, 16 fours, two sixes), his 13th first class century and first for Northamptonshire.

Rory Burns posted 107 as Surrey, asked to bat first, reached 261 for six on the opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Northamptonshire at the Kia Oval.
