Victoria Grizzlies forward Matthew Wood, Langley Rivermen goaltender Jameson Kaine and Cranbrook Bucks forward Noah Quinn have been named the BCHL 3 Stars of the Week. 1st Star – Matthew Wood (F) – Victoria Grizzlies Wood scored seven times in just three games over the weekend, including the potential goal of the year in the BCHL, which made it all the way to TSN SportsCentre’s Highlight of the Night. The recently turned 17-year-old also added an assist to finish with eight points. His highlight reel goal came on Friday night against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs when he tied the game at one by deking through multiple defenders and finishing with a between-the-legs top corner finish. Wood added another goal late in the third period to get the Grizzlies to within one, but they would ultimately lose the contest 3-2. He was named first star. On Saturday, in a high-scoring affair against the Nanaimo Clippers, Wood opened the scoring in the first period and scored for a second time halfway through the middle frame to put his team up 4-2, but Victoria eventually dropped a 7-5 decision. Somehow, the best was yet to come for the second-year forward as he registered a hat trick and a helper for a four-point afternoon in Sunday’s 5-3 win against the visiting Chilliwack Chiefs. Wood scored in the first and second periods to give his team a 2-0 lead, then ultimately sealed the game into the empty net in the final minute. He was named first star of the game. His incredible weekend has vaulted him to the top of the BCHL scoring leaderboard as he now sits with 70 points in 35 games, three clear of second. Wood also leads the league in goals with 39. 2nd Star – Jameson Kaine (G) – Langley Rivermen Kaine won all three of his starts last week after being thrust into the starting role, stopping 116 of 121 shots to give himself a .959 save percentage and a 1.65 goals-against average over that stretch. In a Tuesday night start, the North Vancouver, B.C. native made 36 saves and only let in two goals as the Rivermen held on for a 3-2 win against the Surrey Eagles. He was two seconds away from only having a single blemish in the game, but surrendered a goal at 19:58 of the third. On Friday, in the first of back-to-back road dates with the Powell River Kings, Kaine was nearly perfect, allowing just one goal in a 2-1 Rivermen overtime victory in which he stopped 40 of 41 shots. He was named the first star of the game. The 18-year-old netminder was back in the crease again on Saturday night, making another 40 saves and keeping his team in the game as they rallied for a dramatic comeback. The Rivermen were down 2-0 early in the third when they erupted for three straight goals and took their third straight decision by a 3-2 final. Kaine now has a .922 save percentage, which is the fifth best mark in the BCHL. He owns a record of 13-4-2 and a goals-against average of 2.63. 3rd Star – Noah Quinn (F) – Cranbrook Bucks Quinn tied for the league lead in points last with with eight over three games on four goals and four assists on Cranbrook’s weekend road trip. The Bemidji State University commit collected a pair of second-period assists on Friday night as he helped the Bucks to a 4-0 road win against the Merritt Centennials. Saturday night was when he really took off. Quinn scored four goals and chipped in with an assist for a five-point night to lead Cranbrook to a 6-3 win over the West Kelowna Warriors. His first came late in the second period to give his team a 3-1 lead heading into the break. He came out of the intermission and scored twice on the power play before the halfway point of the third frame to increase the lead to 5-1. He had one more in him as he potted his fourth of the game with less than three minutes to go. He was named the game’s first star. On Sunday evening, he extended his point streak to nine games with a first-period assist in the team’s eventual 5-4 loss to the Penticton Vees. Quinn is the Bucks second leading scorer with 44 points in 42 games, which puts him into the top-20 in league scoring. He also has 21 goals on the year, which again is second on the Bucks and top-20 in the league.
Cowichan Valley Capitals goaltender McCoy Bidewell, Nanaimo Clippers forward Sean Donaldson and West Kelowna Warriors forward Christophe Farmer have been named the BCHL 3 Stars of the Week. 1st Star – McCoy Bidewell (G) – Cowichan Valley Capitals Bidewell won both of his starts last week, swatting aside 81 of the 84 shots he faced to finish the week with a .964 save percentage and a 1.50 goals-against average. He also recorded the first shutout of his BCHL career. The 19-year-old made 46 saves on Wednesday night, including 22 in the first period alone as he guided the Capitals to a 5-3 win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and earned second star of the game. On Sunday afternoon, Bidewell was back in net as he stopped all 35 shots he faced in a 4-0 blanking of the Coquitlam Express. The Grande Prairie, Alta. native now has a .919 save percentage on the season, which is sixth best in the BCHL, and a record of 8-8-3. 2nd Star – Sean Donaldson (F) – Nanaimo Clippers Donaldson tied for the league lead in points last week with six in just two contests, finishing with a pair of goals and four helpers. On Friday, the 20-year-old from Vancouver, B.C. registered an assist in both the first and second periods in the Clippers 6-4 road win over the Powell River Kings. The two teams played again the next night and Donaldson doubled his production, scoring twice and adding two assists for a four-point night in his team’s 7-3 victory. His second-period goal stood up as the game-winner. Donaldson is up to 29 goals on the year, which is third most in the league, while his 54 points in 35 games put him in fourth in the BCHL scoring race. 3rd Star – Christophe Farmer (F) – West Kelowna Warriors Farmer also tie for the league lead in scoring during the week with six points on two goals and four assists over two games. He got the scoring started for the Warriors late in the first period of their Tuesday night game against the Merritt Centennials and the team would not look back from there, going on to score six more times for a 7-1 win. Farmer added two assists to give him a three-point night and first star of the game. The Blainville, Que. native matched his production the next time out on Friday night in a rematch against the Cents with another three-point effort on a goal and two helpers. His goal midway through the first ended up as the game-winning tally in a 7-2 West Kelowna win. In 10 games since joining the Warriors from the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Farmer has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points.
Penticton Vees forward Josh Nadeau, Vernon Vipers goaltender Roan Clarke and Salmon Arm Silverbacks goaltender Owen Say have been named the BCHL 3 Stars of the Week. 1st Star – Josh Nadeau (F) – Penticton Vees Nadeau led all BCHL players with four goals last week and tied for the lead in points with six in three games. On Wednesday night, in a marquee matchup against the first-place Salmon Arm Silverbacks, the New Brunswick native scored the first goal of the game 48 seconds into the third period in his team’s eventual 2-1 road victory. On Friday, the Vees were in Merritt for a date with the Centennials and Nadeau collected an assist in the Vees 5-3 win. On Saturday, the 18-year-old registered his first career BCHL hat trick and also chipped in with an assist for a four-point night in Penticton’s 8-2 win over the Trail Smoke Eaters. He was named first star of the game. Since the new year, Nadeau has racked up 14 points in 10 games and sits in a tie for sixth in league scoring with 50 points in 36 games. His 28 goals on the year are the third most in the BCHL. 2nd Star – Roan Clarke (G) – Vernon Vipers Clarke continued his strong play of late, winning both of his games last week, despite facing 88 shots in just two games. He ended the week with a .955 save percentage and a 1.92 goals-against average. On Wednesday, the 18-year-old from Cloverdale, B.C. was the first star of the game in the Vipers 3-2 road win against the Trail Smoke Eaters. Clarke stopped 49 of 51 shots, which was the most rubber he has faced in his BCHL career. On Friday, he was back in the crease in Cranbrook to take on the Bucks where he impressed once again, this time stopping 35 of the 36 shots he faced through regulation and overtime, then stopped another three in the shootout as the Vipers won 2-1. Clarke is on a personal seven-game win streak dating back to Jan. 14, while the team is riding a nine-game streak. His record has improved to 11-10-4 in 25 appearances to go along with a .909 save percentage and a 2.85 goals-against average. 3rd Star – Owen Say (G) – Salmon Arm Silverbacks Say stopped 77 of the 80 shots he faced last week in two games, going 1-1-0 and finishing the week with a .963 save percentage and a 1.51 goals-against average. Despite being peppered with 41 shots in a midweek matchup against the Penticton Vees, the 20-year-old kept it a low-scoring game by making 39 save in a 2-1 Salmon Arm loss. He was named the game’s first star. After a night off on Friday, Say was back in net on Saturday for a game against the West Kelowna Warriors. He stopped 38 of 39 shots to keep the game tied through regulation before the ‘Backs won it 16 seconds into overtime. Say boasts a .924 save percentage this year, which is second best in the BCHL and his 2.32 goals-against average is fourth best in the league. He has also played the third most minutes of any goaltender.
Wenatchee Wild defenceman Brasen Boser, Trail Smoke Eaters forward Zach Michaelis and West Kelowna Warriors forward John Evans have been named the BCHL 3 Stars of the Week. 1st Star – Brasen Boser (D) – Wenatchee Wild Boser was the highest scoring defenceman last week and tied for second among all BCHL skaters after posting two goals and three assists in a pair of Wenatchee wins over the weekend. The 17-year-old scored once and added two assists on Saturday in his team’s 7-1 road win over the Merritt Centennials and was named the game’s first star. On Sunday afternoon, Boser put the cap on the Wild’s three-goal opening period and later added an assist in a 4-1 victory over the West Kelowna Warriors. Boser did the majority of his damage on the power play with four of his points coming with the man advantage. He more than doubled his point output for this season over the weekend and now stands at eight points in 18 games, second among Wild blueliners. 2nd Star – Zach Michaelis (F) – Trail Smoke Eaters Michaelis continued his strong play of late with five points in two games on three goals and two assists. On Friday, he scored both of Trail’s goals, including one on the power play, and found the back of the net again in the shootout to clinch a 3-2 win for the Smokies. On Saturday, he was all over the scoresheet again, this time with a goal and two helpers in a 6-3 loss to the Penticton Vees. He was named first star of both games. Michaelis was in on all five goals his team scored over the weekend and now has 13 points over a five-game streak dating back to Dec. 1. His big week puts him in a tie for 10th overall in BCHL scoring with 28 points in in 21 games and his 17 goals are tied for fourth most in the league. 3rd Star – John Evans (F) – West Kelowna Warriors Evans was the high point man last week after collecting six points in three games. On Friday, the South Surrey, B.C. native scored midway through the second period to tie the game after the Merritt Centennials took an early 2-0 lead. He later added an assist on the power play as his team skated to the 6-3 win. The next night, Evans filled the stat sheet again, this time with a goal and two assists in a narrow 4-3 victory over the Vernon Vipers. He closed out his week by assisting on the Warriors lone goal in a 4-1 defeat against the Wenatchee Wild on Sunday afternoon. Evans’ point total now sits at 20 on the season in 22 games, which puts him fifth in team scoring.
Langley Rivermen goaltender Ajeet Gundarah, Salmon Arm Silverbacks goaltender Owen Say and Chilliwack Chiefs forward Kienan Draper have been named the BCHL 3 Stars of the Week. 1st Star – Ajeet Gundarah (G) – Langley Rivermen Gundarah started two of the Rivermen’s three games last weekend on their Island road trip. The 18-year-old won both of his starts and finished the week with a .971 save percentage and a 0.99 goals-against average after stopping 68 of the 70 shots he faced. After getting the night off on Friday, Gundarah starred in Langley’s Saturday night win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. He made 35 saves to keep the game at 1-1 in regulation and allow his team to get the extra point 36 seconds into overtime in a 2-1 win. He was named the first star of the game. On Sunday afternoon, Gundarah was back in the crease in another road game, this time in Victoria to take on the Grizzlies. The Richmond, B.C. native stopped 33 of 34 shots in another low-scoring affair as the Rivermen held on for a 2-1 win to finish a perfect 3-0 on the road trip. Gundarah improved his record to 8-3-1 on the year and saw his save percentage climb to .934, which is second best in the BCHL. 2nd Star – Owen Say (G) – Salmon Arm Silverbacks Say played two of the Silverbacks four games last week and went 2-0 with a shutout, while posting a .969 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average. On Friday, the London, Ont. product recorded his first career BCHL shutout in a 4-0 Silverbacks win over the Wenatchee Wild. He stopped all 26 shots he faced and was named first star of the game. Say was in net again the following night in a rematch against Wenatchee and he stopped 36 of 38 shots, including 16 in the third period as the Wild tried to tie things up. He would end up guiding his team to a 3-2 victory. Say has 11 wins on the year in 14 appearances, which is the second most in the BCHL. He has a .914 save percentage and a 2.33 goals-against average on the year. 3rd Star – Kienan Draper (F) – Chilliwack Chiefs Draper led the charge offensively for the Chiefs in a three-win week for the team, scoring three times and adding three assists for six points in three contests. The 19-year-old from Royal Oak, Mich. had two points in the Chiefs 11-1 win over the Powell River Kings on Wednesday night. He assisted on a shorthanded goal in the first period and scored a power-play marker of his own in the third. On Friday, Draper recorded his second straight multi-point game when he notched two goals and one assist in Chilliwack’s 7-2 win over the Coquitlam Express and earned first star of the game. He wrapped up his weekend on Sunday with one assist in the Chiefs 3-2 triumph over the Surrey Eagles. After his big performance last week, Draper now has 13 points in 15 games this season.
