Leicester City’s first victory in six matches was made in Algeria with Riyad Mahrez and record signing Islam Slimani on target to break down stubborn resistance from Huddersfield. In the absence of his injured sidekick Jamie Vardy, Mahrez took responsibility for his team by brilliantly volleying The Foxes ahead after 53 minutes and then setting up his compatriot Slimani six minutes later for the striker’s first Premier League goal since April. Marc Albrighton capped an outstanding individual performance by adding a third goal and there was more good news for manager Claude Puel with £22million summer signing Adrien Silva making a belated Foxes debut five minutes from time. Silva had been signed in the summer transfer window but the paperwork had been filed too late - by 14 seconds - for him to play until now.

If Mark Hughes is planning any New Year’s resolutions, he may want to consider giving up gambling. The Welshman admitted that he played a weakened team in a 5-0 defeat at Chelsea two days ago to give Stoke a better chance of beating Newcastle, and the high-risk strategy backfired in the wind and rain here. Ayoze Perez grabbed a 73rd minute winner to send Newcastle above Stoke in the table as Hughes’s slipped back to two places above the relegation zone.

A single day into 2018 and already we can all but dish out the award for scrappiest goal of the year. Congratulations to Bournemouth. Not that Eddie Howe will care how they go in. They were heading for a 2-1 defeat by Brighton when this almighty goalmouth scramble occurred and saved their skin at the AMEX Stadium. Jordan Ibe’s corner clattered into a collection of defenders as a series of shots made Brighton’s box look like a pinball machine. Finally, a slight mis-kick by Callum Wilson caught them all by surprise as the ball trickled over the line, seemingly in slow motion. Job done.
