For the first time ever, Italy have missed two consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments. A 1-0 loss to North Macedonia in the UEFA World Cup Qualifying playoffs rules the Azzurri out of the 2022 finals in Qatar. After 2018, Italy looked to have a solid plan to avoid another embarrassment. And after winning Euro 2020, there is no doubt that Italy is a strong team. But weak results in the group stage left an unclear playoff path, and a shock upset by North Macedonia (who had just two shots on target) in Palermo means Italy miss the World Cup again.
