Florida State Men’s Basketball defeated #7 Virginia at home by a score of 81-60 last night. You’re not reading that wrong. FSU put up 81 points against one of the top defenses in the country. If you are relatively new to college basketball you might not realize just how different these team's identities are schematically. Offensively FSU focuses on pace and space. Looking for fast breaks and running a lot of spread ball-screen. Virginia tends to slow things down. They tend to run a motion-based offense that sets a majority of their screens off-ball. These tendencies are mirrored on defense. FSU plays an aggressive denial defense where Virginia looks to slow things down and restrict paint touches with their patented packline defense. This game, as all games between these two teams generally are, was a clash between these two styles. Fortunately for the Seminoles, they were able to control the tempo and ultimately the outcome of the game. This game was a fun one to watch for FSU fans, but it could always use another closer watch. So if you want an overview of the critical moments within last night's game and some insight on the game within the game, then this video is the one for you.
Florida State Basketball defeated the Louisville Cardinals 78-65 off a great shooting night from the Seminoles. They were able to shoot 42.5% of their three-pointers while limiting Louisville to 25%. The 'Noles were led in scoring by Raiquan Gray but senior guard MJ Walker was able to accumulate 10 assists. This video is going to break down how FSU had such a successful night and what changes you can expect to see in the upcoming games.
Since the FSU vs Wake game was canceled I decided to simulate the game where I get to call the plays (trying to act like the coaches themselves). Due to Madden's constraints, it couldn't be perfect but I had fun and hope you do too!
It didn’t seem clear that we would see another FSU football game in 2020. Amongst all the cancellations and rumors of a shutdown of the Florida State Seminoles football season a beacon of hope for those that love football came in the form of two new games on the schedule. The Duke Blue Devils come to Tallahassee on Saturday for the first game in three weeks for the ‘Noles. Because of their status of as a basketball school their football team gets little notoriety which is a shame because Head Coach David Cutcliffe has started making them a competitive team within the ACC. However, this year hasn’t been a bright spot in Cutcliffe’s tenure. Duke is coming to Tallahassee with only 2 wins under its belt. In any given year this should be an assumed victory for FSU. However, this isn’t a normal year. The ‘Noles desperately need a win and this could be a good way to get momentum going but it won’t be a walk in the park. So what can we expect from the Blue Devils this Saturday? Who are the players to look out for? Where can FSU attack their defense? If you want to know the answers of these questions or just like hearing people talk FSU football join the guys at the Triple Option as we break down a previous Duke football game.
This game doesn’t look good for Florida State (to say the least). The Seminoles have put together a string of bad losses since the UNC upset, and it doesn’t seem like their misery is about to end. The loss at NC State was at least somewhat excusable, as the staff has continued to purge much of the veteran talent from the program and play a majority of underclassmen, including freshman quarterback Chubba Purdy. Purdy looked good in his first start, but will now miss the rest of the season due to complications from an earlier collarbone injury (no one closely following the program is surprised with this injury luck). Coming to town are the Clemson Tigers, led by head coach Dabo Swinney, and a generational talent at quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. The Tigers are one of the best teams in the country, once again, finding themselves on the short list of national title favorites, but they’ve actually proven to be mortal this season. The injury bug hasn’t spared them, either. Lawrence missed two games after catching COVID-19, and the Tigers have been without their most talented receiver (Justyn Ross) all season. Defensive injuries have piled up, as well, leading to a loss at the hands of Notre Dame in South Bend a few weeks ago. So what do the Tigers do well? How have they gotten to this point? What are their weaknesses? If you happen to be a Florida State fan with a morbid curiosity, join us as we discuss these questions and more. Another Monday another slow recovery from a weekend where Florida State continues to push the lower limits of rock bottom. For any fan that made this past Saturday a mental health holiday and decided not to watch the Seminoles play you made the correct decision. The Pittsburgh Panthers waltzed into Doak Campbell stadium and left the ‘Noles behind with a 24 point defeat and a bad taste in their mouths. How did FSU get to this point? As of now all indications point to them being a basement dweller in the ACC. Even their worst recruiting class should be able to perform on a higher level than this. Right? Up until this point the guys on the Triple Option have supported Head Coach Mike Norvell and his staff. He has been given the keys to one of the hardest cars to drive in the nation but this past Saturday he made some truly perplexing decisions. Is it time to begin questioning whether Norvell is right for the job or is that a bit premature. Join Kingpin, the substitute teacher, and Sam Elliot as they try to answer these tough questions and more.
The Florida State Seminoles are looking to have a bounce back win after this much needed bye week and they will have to do it against an ailing Pitt team. The Pittsburgh Panthers started the season with high hopes. After starting 3-0 and beating a top 25 Louisville team they were feeling good about their squad. The defense was one of the best in the country and the offense was getting the job done. They then lost the next 2 games by a combined 2 points. To add insult to injury they lost the linchpin of their offense: Senior quarterback Kenny Pickett. They are now on a mission to stop a 4 game losing skid. If they want to beat the ‘Noles they will have to do it on the backs of their defense. This match quarters defense is the exact scheme that Harlon Barnett tried to run in his short stint in Tallahassee but it actually seems like the kids know their assignments. Lets take a look at how it works and what Florida State head coach Mike Norvell can try to do to beat it. The Florida State Seminoles were ran off of the field this last Saturday by a 1-4 Louisville Cardinals team. And this was a mere week after what was thought by many as a program defining win against a top 5 North Carolina Team. So clearly this program has a long way to go before they are where they want to be. There has been the taste of the promise that a Mike Norvell led team can have along with some of the pitfalls that naturally will come with dramatically overturning an ailing culture. Luckily for the Seminoles they have an off week this week and I believe that they have no shortage of things to work on over that time. So what happened? How did the team regress this quickly? But more importantly how good did Chubba Purdy look throwing his first incompletions on his young career? If you want answers to those questions please join us, the Triple Option guys, for some film analysis and hot takes. I hope you enjoyed the video. Please join us in the comments as we would love to hear why we’re wrong and to know your opinion on what went wrong last Saturday.
