Stuart Hogg a doubt for France as Irish duo go unpunished
Stuart Hogg a doubt for France as Irish duo go unpunished

Scotland are sweating on the results of a scan on Stuart Hogg after the star full-back injured his shoulder. The 26-year-old was hauled off just 16 minutes into Saturday’s defeat by Ireland — despite protesting to stay on the pitch. The Scottish medical team will put out an update on Monday, with Gregor Townsend hoping that his Lions man will be cleared to face France next week. Worst case — he could miss the remainder of the Six Nations. Hogg was taken out by Ireland forwards Peter O’Mahony and Rory Best when he chased his own kick. Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw criticised the officials after there was no sanction. ‘Romain Poite refereed us against South Africa in November and we don’t seem to see eye to eye,’ said Laidlaw. ‘We are not going to blame him for the defeat. We look at ourselves.’ Joe Schmidt says Ireland’s current injury issues will ‘vaccinate’ the squad ahead of the World Cup in Japan. Ireland went into Saturday’s game shorn of the injured Robbie Henshaw, Garry Ringrose, CJ Stander and Devin Toner, with Johnny Sexton a big doubt for the Italy match after suffering a concussion in Murrayfield. Fringe players, Chris Farrell and Quinn Roux, were handed starts in Edinburgh, and Schmidt insists that Ireland’s strength in depth will serve them well in the future. ‘We’ve done well in the Six Nations in the last five years so if it doesn’t come to pass this year there is a big thing at the end of the year for us and any time we get the opportunity to blend guys in and be forced to make late changes and be forced to kind of reconstruct what we do on the pitch,’ he said. ‘I think it helps vaccinate us against what happened last time.’

'We were taught a cold and humiliating lesson' French media slam France after loss to England

Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mL'We were taught a cold and humiliating lesson': French media slam France after loss to England. French rugby paper Midi Olympique laid into its national team after their Six Nations capitulation against England at Twickenham, labelling the loss 'Waterloo' on its front page. France lost 44-8, with Jonny May scoring a 30-minute hat-trick and Henry Slade, Owen Farrell and a penalty try ensuring a landslide result as the visitors suffered a second defeat of the tournament. The paper used its front page to call for fundamental change to Jacques Brunel's team amid a poor run of form for the national team. Alongside the headline, was the text: 'It is to cry, the XV of Jacques Brunel's France never existed against England.  'The Blues took a real lesson in rugby, cold and humiliating.  'It is urgent to change everything.'  The loss to England comes after a 24-19 defeat to Wales in the opening round, having held a 16-0 half-time lead. Alarm bells had sounded for France after a mixed Autumn campaign which saw a 28-13 win over Argentina sandwiched between a 29-26 loss to South Africa and a 21-14 reverse against Fiji. Many are calling for members of the 2018 Under-20 world championship-winning side to be given their chance in place of failing senior players.  Scotland are next up at Stadio Olimpico on February 23 as the team look to revert to winning ways.

England confirm Maro Itoje is out of action for France and Wales Six Nations matches
England confirm Maro Itoje is out of action for France and Wales Six Nations matches

Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLEngland confirm Maro Itoje is out of action for France and Wales Six Nations matches. England have confirmed that Maro Itoje will miss Guinness Six Nations matches against France and Wales due to a knee injury but could return for the final rounds of England's title quest. Itoje suffered medial ligament damage in Saturday's 32-20 victory over Ireland in Dublin with a scan revealing a grade two tear that prevents him from playing in the next two rounds, as revealed by Sportsmail. 'Maro Itoje is expected to be available towards the end of the tournament,' a Rugby Football Union statement read.    Forwards: Jack Clifford (Harlequins) Dan Cole (Leicester Tigers) Luke Cowan-Dickie (Exeter Chiefs) Tom Curry (Sale Sharks) Ben Earl (Saracens) * Ellis Genge (Leicester Tigers) Jamie George (Saracens) Nathan Hughes (Wasps) Nick Isiekwe (Saracens) George Kruis (Saracens) Joe Launchbury (Wasps) Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints) Ben Moon (Exeter Chiefs) Brad Shields (Wasps) Kyle Sinckler (Harlequins) Jack Singleton (Worcester Warriors) * Billy Vunipola (Saracens) Mako Vunipola (Saracens) Harry Williams (Exeter Chiefs) Mark Wilson (Newcastle Falcons)  Backs: Chris Ashton (Sale Sharks) Mike Brown (Harlequins) Joe Cokanasiga (Bath Rugby) Elliot Daly (Wasps) Ollie Devoto (Exeter Chiefs) Owen Farrell (Saracens) captain George Ford (Leicester Tigers) Jonny May (Leicester Tigers) Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs) Dan Robson (Wasps) * Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs) Ben Te’o (Worcester Warriors) Ollie Thorley (Gloucester Rugby) * Manu Tuilagi (Leicester Tigers) Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers) *uncapped  Itoje's Saracens team-mate Nick Isiekwe has been called into England's 35-man training squad assembled to begin preparations for Sunday's visit of France to Twickenham. Courtney Lawes and Joe Launchbury are competing to fill the vacancy in the second row alongside George Kruis. Itoje will remain at the squad's Surrey training base to continue his rehabilitation and could be involved in the last two games of the Championship against Italy and Scotland. It is hoped that intensive rehabilitation will allow him to come back swiftly but the worst case scenario would be around eight weeks out.  Manu Tuilagi is in the squad to face Les Bleus after avoiding being cited for a shoulder charge on Ireland winger David Stockdale.  There was uproar online about the incident but the Leicester Tiger has escaped punishment.  Jones still has a number of uncapped players in the squad such as Ollie Thorley, Ben Earl and Jack Singleton but he is not expected to make many changes to the line-up after England's hugely impressive opener against the reigning champions.

Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLAlli touches down in Dubai while Tottenham team-mate Heung-min Son toasts win over Newcastle. Tottenham's stars continue to jet-set around the world as Dele Alli touched down in Dubai for some winter sun as he continues his recovery from injury.  Star striker Harry Kane, himself out injured, was in Atlanta on Sunday for the Superbowl as Tottenham turned to Heung-min Son to rescue three points in a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday.  Alli, arriving in Dubai with his fashion brand Leo Fortis team, cut a relaxed figure as he joked around in first class with one of his entourage.   Writing on Instagram, the midfielder wrote: 'Touched down, ready to work'.  Mauricio Pochettino was beginning to stare an injury crisis in the face before the timely return of Son to the side following the South Korean international's involvement in the Asian Cup.  A match-winning goal against Newcastle at Wembley means he has now amassed nine goals and five assists in his past 10 appearances for Spurs.  He kick-started the fightback in a 2-1 win in midweek against Watford and again against Newcastle, leading to him toasting both performances with a celebratory dinner in London. Along with his agent Patrick Williams, Son was reunited with former Tottenham team-mate Kevin Wimmer.   The pair posed for selfies and looked delighted to be back together given the defender is currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga with Hannover   Having both arrived from Germany in north London in 2015, the duo were famously good friends at Tottenham and were often spotted together joking around in training.  They spent time at the Langham hotel in Marylebone as Wimmer was all smiles - a distraction from Hannover 96's difficult season sitting at the foot of the table in Germany's top division.

Joe Burns and Travis Head score centuries as Australia dominate Sri Lanka
Joe Burns and Travis Head score centuries as Australia dominate Sri Lanka

Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLJoe Burns and Travis Head score centuries as Australia dominate Sri Lanka. Joe Burns and Travis Head smashed big hundreds to end Australia's century drought and put the hosts on course for a massive first innings total despite a wobbly start against Sri Lanka's makeshift attack in the second and final Test on Friday. Sri Lanka's injury-depleted pace attack flattered to deceive on the opening day of the first ever test at the Manuka Oval as Burns and Head forged a mammoth fourth-wicket stand of 308 to power the hosts to 384 for four at close after being reduced to 28 for three. Burns, who had scored his last Test hundred against New Zealand in early 2016, was unbeaten on a career-best 172 after bringing up the first century by an Australian batsman since Usman Khawaja's 141 in the drawn Dubai test against Pakistan last October. Head completed his maiden Test ton before he was out on 161, following up on his 84 in the victory in Brisbane last week. Kurtis Patterson was batting on 25, after being dropped at short leg on the first ball he faced from Dhananjaya de Silva. On a chilly and overcast morning at the Manuka Oval, Australia captain Tim Paine finally had some luck with the coin toss, winning for only the second time in nine tests he had led the team in. But his joy was shortlived as Sri Lanka made early inroads despite being forced to go with a completely new pace attack with the injured Suranga Lakmal joining Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara on the sidelines after playing the Gabba Test. Left-armer Vishwa Fernando, who was not in the original squad and joined only as a replacement for Nuwan Pradeep, struck twice in two overs to dismiss left-handers Marcus Harris and Khawaja with his outswinging deliveries. Debutant Chamika Karunaratne, who arrived in Australia only couple of days back as a replacement, then picked up a wicket with only his fourth delivery in Test cricket, getting Marnus Labuschagne (six) to edge behind. The hosts, who lead the series 1-0 after their win in Brisbane by an innings and 40 runs, looked in deep trouble when Burns and Head combined to prop up the innings. As the new ball lost its shine and the Sri Lankan pacemen their swing, the batting pair grew in confidence and upped their scoring rate, finding the boundaries almost at will against Sri Lanka's listless bowling on a docile pitch. Burns, who returned to the side in the ongoing series after being dropped against Pakistan and India, played some flowing off-drives and also cut and pulled ferociously against Sri Lanka's pace attack with a combined experience of five Tests coming into the match. The 29-year-old has hit 26 fours in his unfinished 243-ball knock. Head looked assured during his stay at the crease and hit 21 fours and a six in his 204-ball knock before becoming Fernando's third victim. Sri Lanka's fielders did not help their cause by dropping four catches reprieving both Burns and Head before they completed their hundreds.

England can't tempt Alastair Cook back but the top order can at least try to bat like him
England can't tempt Alastair Cook back but the top order can at least try to bat like him

Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLEngland can't tempt Alastair Cook back but the top order can at least try to bat like him. Do you know what England should do? Get down on their hands and knees and beg Alastair Cook to put down his microphone, come out of retirement and open the batting in St Lucia to try to salvage some pride from this wretched series. Cook has not picked up a bat since his perfect, emotional farewell at the Oval last summer and, in truth, he would never agree to return. But right now, nobody in this England Test team seems to have the application to bat properly in Test cricket like Cook did. No one looks capable of displaying the guts and character coach Trevor Bayliss admits have been woefully lacking during England’s Caribbean horror show. It was almost surreal to see England’s most prolific Test runscorer — looking as fit and ready to play as ever — sitting in the media centre at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in his new role with the BBC as he watched one of his country’s most spectacular calamities unfold. The very old-fashioned but still valid attributes Cook always epitomised are precisely what have been missing in Barbados and Antigua, where the Wisden Trophy has been lost in fewer than seven days of cricket. There has been no stomach for the fight, no realisation England cannot always succeed in red-ball cricket playing the white-ball way. Instead there has been stubbornness, complacency and almost an arrogance about them. Yes, there are reasons why a domestic structure that has marginalised the first-class game does not produce Test batsman any more, just as the Twenty20 revolution has pushed the ultimate format into the margins and threatens the existence of the greatest game. And that is before the accursed Hundred comes into existence next year and sends an already crammed fixture list past bursting point. We will be playing Championship matches in February and October next to leave ‘summer’ free for the ECB’s huge gamble with our game’s future.  That is not England’s fault but the point is these players are better than this. Much, much better than a side who lost all 10 wickets for 54 in their first innings in Barbados; all 10 for 161 in their second there; all 10 for 183 in the first innings here in Antigua and then, again, all 10 for 97 on Saturday when they must have known that even a lead of 130 would have given them a good chance of victory. Instead they could manage an advantage of just 14. Goodness, they have lost wickets in this series every 32 balls, which is an even worse rate than the 1985-86 tour that is commonly regarded as their worst ever in the Caribbean. Truly, they have been more desperate here than even England sides playing against the greatest of all West Indians. It is a real low. But for an example of how it should be done, England do not even have to look up to the press box to try to persuade their former captain, who deserves to be left in peace to enjoy his new life, to come and rescue them.     Step forward Darren Bravo who, since calling West Indies board president Dave Cameron a ‘big idiot’ on Twitter nearly three years ago, has been spending much of his time in international exile playing Twenty20. Yet Bravo, who hit five sixes in one over during a Caribbean Premier League match last year, was discipline personified in surviving all Stuart Broad, Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes could hurl at him on an unsatisfactory pitch to reach the slowest Test 50 this century and set up West Indies’ triumph. Now that is adapting. England have to prove they can do what Bravo did and have a Plan B, to find the right blend of defence and attack and sell their wickets much more expensively. It is something they have failed to do ever since Bayliss said on taking up his post that he prefers two ‘positive’ players in his top three.  Those words have come back to haunt the Australian, whose methods have still not resonated with England as

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson left unhappy with treatment of Wilfried Zaha

Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLCrystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson left unhappy with treatment of Wilfried Zaha. Wilfried Zaha has apologised for getting sent off in Crystal Palace's draw at Southampton as Roy Hodgson revealed his frustration at the treatment of his star man on Wednesday night. His team had been on course for a deserved victory when Zaha scored his first goal since September 15 with a fine finish in the 41st minute. In the second half, Mamadou Sakho had one effort disallowed before seeing another cleared off the line by Jan Bednarek as they threatened to increase their lead, but James Ward-Prowse scored his third goal in three league games to secure a draw before his tussle with Zaha led to the latter's red card. Booked for his exchange with Ward-Prowse, who scored in the 77th minute, Zaha sarcastically applauded referee Andre Marriner to earn a second yellow that will mean he misses Saturday's fixture at home to Fulham. Zaha tweeted after the game, expressing his regret at his actions. He wrote: 'All I can do is apologise to the team and the fans for my red card tonight because I could of cost us today. I will learn from it for sure.' 'It's disappointing that a player who perhaps provided the most entertainment throughout the game was consistently fouled,' said Hodgson, who refused to criticise Marriner. 'That he wasn't able to contain his frustration with that consistent fouling and complains about a foul that wasn't given and probably should have been. 'I don't think he's targeted as a person I just think players who run with the ball as well as he does just get fouled. His play was good enough to provoke those fouls. 'It's not a good evening knowing he's going to miss the next game. We need him playing. 'We were fairly well in control. The first half performance was very good. Second half we should really have taken one or two of the chances that came our way.' Asked if he expects Palace to make any new signings before the conclusion of the January transfer window, the 71-year-old responded: 'I'm happy with the squad I've got but it's not that big. I don't know that there's any activity planned. 'We've brought in Bakary Sako. I was told we'd bring in two players but I don't count the young goalkeeper (loanee Lucas Perri); a goalkeeper was far from a priority.' Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, who has led his team to eight points from their past 12 as they gather momentum in their battle against relegation, dismissed Hodgson's suggestions Zaha had been targeted and praised Ward-Prowse for becoming so influential. Asked of the attention the 26-year-old Zaha received, he responded: 'Not more than our players were also fouled. (Nathan) Redmond also has to take a lot of tackling situations against him. 'It's normal that good players get more pressure because if you want to defend them you have to be close to them. 'The interesting thing was (Ward-Prowse) scored from the full-back position after we switched the shape. It is absolutely fantastic for taking this chance with both hands.' The Austrian, 51, also insisted he remains unsure over whether Charlie Austin will remain at the club, and is regardless content with his squad. 'I don't want to take a transfer that doesn't fit 100 per cent to us,' he said. 'Maybe in the summer but with this squad to go until May is not a problem. I expect nothing (with Austin).'

A League Two goalkeeper jokingly asked for donations for new teeth on Tuesday night after having some of his knocked out by a boot to the face. Forest Green's James Montgomery was rushed to hospital after being kicked by Mansfield's Gethin Jones as he dove low to his left to stop the defender scoring. But after receiving treatment for the gruesome facial injury which left him with blood pouring from his mouth and right eye, the shot-stopper was able to see the funny side of the incident. After warning his 'squeamish' Instagram followers to look away, Montgomery posted an image of himself still wearing his blood-soaked goalkeeper top with the captions: 'what a game football is' and '999 please'. The Sunderland-born keeper also took to Twitter to ask his followers if they would help pay for his new teeth - and joke that Jones had come off worse from the collision at the New Lawn. Montgomery tweeted: 'On way to hospital, setting up a just giving page if anyone wants to help me pay for my new teeth.. good point and well done to the lads on coming back from behind! You should see the other lad!!'  Forest Green provided an update on Montgomery's condition, confirming that he had gone to hospital for treatment on a split lip and his teeth.   The former Middlesbrough youth player, who was once a member of Jamie Vardy's V9 academy, is related to Sunderland legend Jim Montgomery, who was in goal when the Black Cats won the FA Cup in 1973.
