Sorry for the wait on this video, as I was actually on a small break but got so many notification and messages asking about this game, and boy was it one to remember for all the wrong reasons. This was one of the worst officiated games I've seen in a very very long time. And it seems like I'm saying this after every week because the officiating just seems to get worse and worse every single week. The Rugby Championship has been so disappointing with it's officiating this year. I'm going to publish a video at the end to highlight all of the inconsistencies and worst calls to showcase the dire state of officiating. This game of Australia vs New Zealand was no different. Where to start? This moment in the game was so horribly officiated in many different ways. So the first one being Tom Wright who makes a tackle on Caleb Clark and then makes a genuine attempt to role away immediately whilst having no affect on the ball availability, yet the ref immediately gives advantage against him and later gives him a yellow card for it. I have no idea why he did that, but Mathieu Raynal was absolutely horrible today. Then when we think things can't get worse. Darcy Swain goes to cleanout twice in the ruck afterwards, the first making contact to the head with a NZ player, which could easily have been yellow carded if World Rugby had consistency in their officiating, but the worst one was yet to come. Swain stands up and then for some reason decides to target the knee of a defenseless Quinn Tupaea, which results in him partially tearing his ACL and also tearing his MCL. He absolutely had no reason to do this but just gave a dirty hit that injured Quinn Tupaea. It just boggles my mind that World Rugby has no issue to go hard on any type of head contact, because of player safety. Yet they seem to think tearing knee ligaments is not as bad on player safety. How is intentionally targeting someone's knee, not the same level of foul play as contact to the head in a tackle? World Rugby is an absolute joke and it's just getting worse and worse.
This was by far, the best moment in the game. It was poetic in a sense that Mapimpi got an opportunity to get revenge on Marika Koroibete in The Rugby Championship match of South Africa vs Australia. I like the attitude that Mapimpi had when he let Marika Koroibete know about his missed tackle, it showed that the fightback from the Springbok team and the fact that everyone came in to back Mapimpi up, showed the pride we had. Mapimpi might have gotten a yellow card, but this was well worth it because he restored the pride of South African fans by doing that. It got back at Australia for the whole Nic White incident as well where he faked an injury to get Faf de Klerk a yellow card. Also what stood out is just how terrifying Eben Etzebeth is when he gets his star going. He was not having any of it and got into the faces of the Australian players and showed why he is the most feared rugby player in rugby. It's been a while when we saw that much aggression from him as he has calmed down in recent time, but this was the perfect game to show his aggression. Eben is a legend and will go down as one of South Africa's best players as well as most liked players to ever play the game. People can be mad at Ben O'Keefe, but he had no choice but to give the yellow card to Mapimpi, he was the one who instigated it. I thought he handled it well, because if it was a northern hemisphere ref, you could bet there would be red cards flying out all over the place.
This was such a fitting moment in the game when the 19 year old kid, Canan Moodie, embarrassed Marika Koroibete in The Rugby Championship game of South Africa vs Australia. What makes it fitting is how Marika Koroibete got praised as the best wing in rugby, despite delivering 3 dirty hits on Springbok players last weekend. It was good to see that South Africa targeted him in the game and completely dominated him where he had absolutely no influence over the game. This game also was a massive stepping stone for Canan Moodie, who is a star in the making. He had a terrific game despite it being his debut. It's going to be awesome to see him develop, but one thing is for certain, he's as talented as they come. He has a shot to be the long term answer at wing for the springboks. South Africa is blessed with talent, with the likes of Henco van Wyk, Jordan Hendrikse, Vincent Tshituka, Evan Roos also knocking on the door for the squad. South Africa's future after the 2023 World Cup seems to be as good as it ever was. On a side note, it was also amazing to see Eben Etzebeth's effort during the try, the fact that he's the first springbok player to celebrate with Canan Moodie after his try, just showcases the work rate Eben has as a lock. It's just awesome to watch as a fan.
What I saw today from Paul Williams was absolutely disgraceful. He was single handedly the reason the Springboks lost that game. We absolutely dominated Australia the first half and had the possession and territory, but absolutely got nothing as Paul Williams decided the game has different rules for the two teams. But that aside, the most shocking moment in the whole game happened at the end of the first half. It started with Mapimpi getting the ball on the sideline and sprinting to score an easy try. But then Marika Koroibete comes in recklessly and shoulder charges Mapimpi with no arms, which results in Mapimpi losing control of the ball and not scoring the try. The ref then just says it was a knock on and completely ignores Damien Willemse who asked about the tackle. To make it worse, they keep on showing replays and different angles and every single one of the angles show the same thing, a reckless shoulder charge. This was as close as you can get to a penalty try and yellow card but for some reason, the TMO and Ref did not even see this as a penalty. How on earth is Paul Williams an international ref, if he misses this? Then to make things absolutely worse, the the next thing happens. It's a scrum for Australia and Faf is trying to pressure Nic White. He then tries to swipe at the ball, but lightly struck Nic on the chin. It was barely a touch, but then Nic White goes full soccer mode and absolutely milks it. The ref then goes to the TMO and they check the replays and watch it over and over in slow motion. They then come to the conclusion that this incident is a yellow card, which is absolutely ridiculous. The reaction from Siya Kolisi and Faf de Klerk after hearing the ref say yellow card, is how every single fan reacted when it was said. It was a complete joke. Nic White should be ashamed of himself and appologize to rugby fans and Faf de Klerk about that. As for Paul Williams and the TMO. How on earth are these two allowed to officiate in a game of this caliber? If they make mistakes like this, how are they allowed to be at this level? It's absolutely disgraceful from World Rugby
This was another incident in the Springboks vs All Blacks game in the Rugby Championship that was just dealt with poorly by Luke Pearce. The Ball gets ripped by the New Zealand defender, yet the ref says it was knocked on by South Africa. New Zealand then tries to play the ball and makes a mistake that leads to Lukhanyo Am picking the Ball up and scoring an easy try. But, because the ref deemed it a knock on, the ball was brought back and the try disallowed. Siya Kolisi clearly disagreed with the ref and asked him to go upstairs to check it again, but Luke Pearce was adamant that it was a knock on and then shut Kolisi down. Then the replays shows and it clearly shows the ball being ripped by the New Zealand defender which meant it should never have been a knock on and it should've been play on. That was a try scoring opportunity taken away from South Africa. The thing that frustrates me is that Luke Pearce was so confident and arrogant about his decision, that he refused to check it and he was clearly wrong as the replays showed.
This was another horrible incident in the game just like the Faf de Klerk head injury, this one was worse because it was just a stupid challenge by Kurt-Lee Arendse that could've resulted in serious injury to Beauden Barrett. I have no idea what he was thinking as he had absolutely no chance to get the ball. I know Kurt-Lee Arendse is not a dirty player, but he needs to be suspended for multiple weeks for this. Stuff like this is what red cards are for, not accidental head clashes. I also have to give props to the ref and tmo for handling this perfectly. It was quick and decisive, they did not need to see 10 minutes of replays to come to the conclusion that this was a red card. They deal with it instantly. But more importantly, it seems that both players seemed to be okay after going off the field. This could've easily been a lot worse for both players. Let's hope they make a fast and healthy recovery.
This was a scary moment in the South Africa vs New Zealand game in The Rugby Championship. Faf de Klerk went in to tackle Caleb Clarke but he got his head on the wrong side and hit his head on Caleb's knee, which knocked him out cold. He was motionless for quite some time but luckily after the medical staff came on he was able to leave to field in a safe manner. It was just a horrible sight for any fans as nobody wants to see a player lay down like that. Later on in the game a great moment happened when Faf walked onto the sideline which was on the big screen, he then got a massive cheer from his home crowd where he started his career. It was a nice moment to see and was also good to know he is okay after the scary hit on him.
How much videos is enough before World Rugby will finally start taking accountability for bad officiating? How many games have to be ruined by World Rugby's strict red card policy surrounding head clashes? How long before we actually start seeing refs use common sense and context before handing out red cards for rugby incidents? More importantly, how long before we actually see consistent refereeing in international rugby? Don't get me wrong, The New Zealand vs Ireland series was a good one and one where Ireland deserved to win. But I'm sure Ireland fans would agree that the head clash in the last match was exactly the same as the one in the previous week where the All Blacks got a red card. All Blacks fans have the right to be absolutely livid at World Rugby for being inconsistent with it's officiating. Had Andrew Porter gotten a red card for his hit on Brodie Retallick, which left him with a broken cheek bone, then the game would've been completely different. So how is it that one weekend, we have a head clash and it's red card. Then the following week, the framework simply just changes and the ref can use context? How is that good for the game of rugby? Every week the laws change and it's just ridiculous. What makes me angry is that this game might be the one that results in Ian Foster losing his job, yet World Rugby won't say a damn thing because they are cowards. They'll just sugarcoat this mistake as "Player Safety" and Northern Hemisphere fans will most likely buy into that excuse. When will this ridiculous framework for head contact stop? How many games must be ruined? Just to be clear, I don't blame the refs in this. Jaco Peyper did what World Rugby requires him to do. In my opinion, I prefer the way Wayne Barnes dealt with it. But we all now that is not how head clashes have been dealt with these past few years. These types of incidents are always red carded. So what has changed within a week?
