Kawhi Leonard - Scintillating Scorer (Playoffs) 16/17
Kawhi Leonard - Scintillating Scorer (Playoffs) 16/17

Kawhi Leonard. NBA Champion. NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 2014. 2x NBA All-Star. 2x All-NBA First Team. 2x NBA Defensive Player of the Year. 3x NBA All-Defensive First Team. 2x DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR. This season was San Antonio’s first without the transcendent talent of Tim Duncan, but the Spurs haven’t missed a beat. The franchise recorded 61 wins this year, making it the first time in their storied history that they’ve had two straight 60 win seasons. That is in no small part thanks to the ascendence of Kawhi Leonard’s offensive output. Kawhi's performance in the playoffs powered him into the pantheon of all-time greats. He had already been having a career (and MVP worthy) year with his 25.5 points per game (good for top 10 in the league) while shooting 88.0% from the foul line, but he elevated even further in the postseason. 27.7 points per game, shooting 52.5% from the field, 45.5% from 3 point land, and 93.1% from the foul line. His rebounding upped from 5.8 to 7.8 and his career best 3.5 assists per game even escalated to 4.6. That may not seem like much, but his usage rate went from 31.2 on the year to 29.4 in the playoffs. The Spurs aren’t a team known for Kobe-esque play. You’ve hardly ever seen a Gregg Popovich-run team have a guy hold the ball at the top of the key in an isolation situation, especially as an end of game play. There always used to be some sort of clever set, some kind of action, but now, Kawhi IS the action. https://stats.nba.com/players/usage/?sort=USG_PCT&dir=-1&Season=2016-17&SeasonType=Regular%20Season If you'd like to support me: Venmo - @Evin_Gual Cash App - $EvinGual Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/evin_gual

James Harden - Hit Ahead Passes 16/17
James Harden - Hit Ahead Passes 16/17

James Harden. 3x All-NBA First Team. 5x NBA All-Star. All-NBA Third Team in 2013. Sixth Man of the Year in 2012. Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Runner Up. 2x USA Basketball Gold Medalist (2012 Olympics in London and the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain). In 2015, the NBA Players Association voted on who they felt was the MVP of the league, and Harden was the first to win an MVP award voted on by his NBA peers. The Beard bamboozled defenses this past season with the move to point guard. He’s so unselfish with his early hit ahead passes that when they offense does flow the ball back to him, the defense is no longer set and he can just pick apart the pieces. He’ll attack gaps and exploit ANY type of open space with an arsenal of absolutely abusive moves. Basically, when Harden wants space, you can either give it to him, or he’ll literally shake you down until he gets it. The point is this video is simple: Harden and his hit ahead passes had Houston rocketing opposing defenses with their early offense, and I wanted to show how that happens. James averaged career best numbers across the board, with his 29.1 points per game (2nd in the league), 8.1 rebounds per (JUST outside of the top 20), and 11.2 assist per game (best in the league). He had history in his hands until Russell Westbrook ripped it from him. While everyone was focusing on Westbrook’s wondrous triple-doubles, Harden was on pace to finish the season as the league leader in both points AND assists, something that hadn’t been done since Nate Archibald’s 1972-73 season with the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. In terms of semi-advanced stats, Harden posted a Player Efficiency Rating (PER) of 27.4 (good for top 5 in the league, just a shade better than LeBron James this year), led the league in win shares and offensive win shares, and had a true shooting percentage of 61.3% (good for top 20 in the league. Below guys like Isaiah Thomas, Steph Curry, and Chris Paul, but WELL above Russell Westbrook (55.4, if you’re wondering)).

Kyrie Irving - Fantastic Finisher (Playoffs) 16/17
Kyrie Irving - Fantastic Finisher (Playoffs) 16/17

Kyrie Irving. NBA champion. 4x NBA All-Star. All-Star Game MVP. All-NBA Third Team. FIBA World Cup MVP. 2 time USA Basketball gold medalist (FIBA World Cup 2014, Rio Olympics 2016). NBA Rookie of the Year. The most fearsome finisher in the NBA today. His handles are arguably the best in the league, (at worst, he’s top 3), he can create off the dribble, and he’s a scorching sharpshooter. He is one of the few guys in the league that can go get you a bucket regardless of what you throw his way. Kevin Durant said Kyrie is more skilled than Allen Iverson (to put it in context, he said that "Kyrie is better than AI…skill for skill” (he didn’t say he was the overall better player, so settle down). Allen Iverson himself said of Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving, “those guys are next level. I didn’t have the handle they do.” Add to that his fearlessness, ferocity, and the force with which he finishes, and you have the foundation for one of the most explosive offensive players in the league. Throw in the fact that he has arguably the most outstanding off-hand in the game and you’d be hard pressed to find a way to stop him. He finished this past season with a career best 25.2 points per game (while posting career numbers of 47.3% from the field, and 90.5% from the foul line), which was 11th best in the league (just ahead of guys like Karl-Anthony Towns, KD, Jimmy Butler, and Paul George). That number jumped up to 25.9 points per game during the playoffs. A veteran of 3 consecutive NBA Finals, Irving has grown exponentially in the 6 years he’s been in the league. An injury risk the bulk of his early career, this past season showed his durability given how he attacked the basket every game he played. While he talks about the "Mamba Mentality” and how Kobe has influenced him, his forceful forays to the rim remind me of young Dwyane Wade with his “fall down 7, get up eight” campaign. His game was also influenced by his godfather Rod Strickland, but the Blue Devil is a whole new breed. He can get anywhere, finish from every angle, and almost fight the ball into the basket. He’s got touch, he’s got talent, and he’s pretty damn good. I bet A LOT of teams watching the Celtics this year will be green with envy. Steph Curry - Superb Separation (Don't Switch)
Steph Curry - Superb Separation (Don't Switch)

Steph Curry was the most lethal offensive weapon in the entire league during the regular season. There’s a reason he’s the first unanimous Most Valuable Player. In addition, he’s a back-to-back MVP (first guard since Steve Nash), the scoring champion, and the only member of the 50-40-90 club to lead the league in scoring during the same year. He’s an advanced stats freak (Player efficiency rating (PER) of 31.5), an NBA champion, and a general waking nightmare for NBA defenses. This is a guy who is so dangerous that he even made two defenders run into each other (5:17). This video is about how he kills cross-matches, over aggressive defenders, and switching on the pick and roll. The MVP already puts so much pressure on defenses, that you don’t need to make life difficult by cross-matching wrong, especially in transition. Cross-matching is the term for when you have to defend someone different from whoever is guarding you. The Warriors generate so many of their buckets in transition, or even the secondary break, so make sure you get as many people back behind the ball as you can. Once that’s done, get the best (most athletic and/or agile) defender to grab Steph. Don’t leave your big alone on Steph island, waiting for his ankle insurance to kick in. After that, in the half court, there’s a lot of clever action the Warriors run to get in their spots, but Steph in a pick and roll is at the heart of most of it. The first option of defending Steph Curry receiving a ball screen is to blitz him high, and force him to give it up. The Cavs did this in the 2015 Finals, but making the Warriors play 4 on 3 with an elite decision maker like Draymond, already on the short roll, is not a recipe for success. That is not featured at all in this video, because that isn’t what this is about. The second option should NEVER be explored: there will never ever be a time to go under a screen for Steph Curry. I don’t care if he can’t hit a shot, and is about to put in cryostatis, you should never go under that screen. The next option is to show, but don’t switch. That’s when the big comes out to bump the ball handler, or at least disrupt the driving angle, as the guard fights over the screen to get back into position. That’s a pretty sound strategy, except Steph’s playmaking ability is world class, and his release is lighting quick, so he might be able to get his shot off before the big can even get out there. Finally, if you do contain Steph, STAY DISCIPLINED. He is relentless with his movement, and as soon as he gives the ball, he might get it back right away. If you relax for even a second, a give-and-go or a backdoor cut will make you look foolish. The Warriors are a combined 140-24 in the last two regular seasons for a reason. All clips are from this current (2015-2016) season. There will be a DON'T SWITCH playoff version when the Finals finish. Kobe Bryant - Midrange Mastery 15/16
Kobe Bryant - Midrange Mastery 15/16

Kobe Bryant is the NBA’s third all-time leading scorer. He holds the second highest single scoring game in NBA history. Stats. Records. Glory. You’ve all read that stuff before. You know what goes on here. As a little tribute to his final season, I went over a few Lakers games (they were not great on the eyes; 17-65 never is), and gathered a few clips of what is often the most requested Kobe video I haven’t made yet. I will probably make a more expansive one at some point, but here’s the stuff from this season. Enjoy! Paul George - Sharpshooter
Paul George - Sharpshooter

Top 5 in scoring. Top 5 in 3 pointers made. Top 20 in 3 point percentage. Top 10 in free throw attempts. 2015-16’s first eastern conference player of the month. That’s what Paul George at 100% looks like. Paul is making everyone forget about what happened to him that suspended his ascendence to the summit of the NBA. His play this season has been the best story this side of the Oracle arena. He’s restructured his jumper at least a few times since he’s been in the league, but whatever he’s doing now, he really should keep doing. Gone are the days of wearing 24 to honor his idol, Kobe Bryant. The Fresno State Bulldog is his own man, with his own number. As with the rating, PG-13 is a warning; the league has been put on notice. Paul has a pristine pull-up jumper that he’s unleashed on the league. George’s gem of a jumper has been so much fun to watch, and his improving handle, fundamental footwork, and ever expanding range, make him undoubtedly more dangerous. Moving off the ball, creating off the bounce, supreme separation on stepbacks, catch and shoots from well behind the line, and everything in between, those are what this video is meant to highlight. Let’s enjoy Paul George’s gorgeous jumpshot, and sensational shotmaking.

Kawhi Leonard - Lockdown
Kawhi Leonard - Lockdown

This video was really fun to make, and I always planned on making it but as I suspected, there was just too much. I decided that his playoff defense merited a video by itself, so these are just a few highlights of his from the regular season. Kawhi Leonard is an absolute nightmare. He is your shadow. Sticking to you. Following your every move. He is everywhere you are and somehow in the spots you want to get to. He can do everything on defense. I don’t like throwing out comparisons, especially to those Bulls teams, but he really does remind me of Scottie Pippen (and even Pops has said as such). He’s consulted with Scottie on how to be the stopper, and whatever he learned that day has made life impossible for the game’s greats ever since. He hounds ball handlers. He denies his man the ball. He will take the ball away before you even realize he’s around. He’s a predator. His length, strength, and smarts will get him into a position to earn the basketball virtually every time down the floor. The Claw, the Kingslayer, the next Scottie Pippen, call him what you will but eventually you’ll be calling him the Defensive Player of the Year. I don’t know if it will be this season, but it is going happen. Just like when he’s after the basketball, it doesn’t matter who is in front of him, he will not be denied. James Harden - Eurostep
James Harden - Eurostep

An emerging James Harden drew many comparisons to Manu Ginobili for obvious reasons, but the move that most noticed was the Eurostep. Now, he's in and possibly leading MVP discussions and he's still shaking guys up with that move. I didn't know exactly how to differentiate them but in every play, you'll notice one of these two things: the rip/windmill move and the sidestep/step-through. For this video, I didn't go all the way back to his Thunder days (I don't even think any of these are from earlier than 2013) but there was more than enough. This isn't by any means a comprehensive compilation but remarkably, there are no James Harden Eurostep videos out there, so here's mine. For the record, let's be real here: a few of these are travels. The footwork is impressive and James has been in the league a little while, so he knows how to get away with certain things. You can comment below on whether or not it's a travel, but the fact is that these were not called, so you know, if you won't celebrate his footwork, at least acknowledge he's doing it well enough to get away with it.
