As soon as Joe Foucha entered the transfer portal last week, schools around the country pursued him. He heard from Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Kansas State, LSU and a handful of other teams as they all tried to add a three-year starter in the Southeastern Conference onto their roster. Foucha, a New Orleans native, felt like he was in high school again at McDonogh 35. He had coaches sliding into his DMs. He needed to make a decision. Only this time, after spending four years at Arkansas, Foucha had a deeper understanding of the recruiting process and what he was searching for in his next school. UL wide receiver Kyren Lacy committed Friday, joining Penn State running back Noah Cain, Arkansas defensive back Greg Brooks Jr., UL cornerback Mekhi Garner and Foucha. The Tigers already added FIU offensive lineman Miles Frazier and East Carolina long snapper Slade Roy last month, giving them seven thus far.
An uneven regular season ended with a dud, as No. 15 Texas A&M was upset 27-24 Saturday night at LSU. LSU quarterback Max Johnson hit Jaray Jenkins on a 28-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left to overcome a late Aggies rally. The Tigers went 75 yards on the winning scoring drive. The Aggies head into bowl season at 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the SEC, having dropped their last two conference games. In losses to Ole Miss and LSU, Texas A&M scored only 43 points. The Tigers (6-6, 3-5) made the most of Ed Orgeron’s final game Tiger Stadium. Whether he coaches in a bowl game is yet to determined.
Freshman Malik Nabers had a career-high 143 yards receiving and a touchdown as LSU defeated Louisiana-Monroe 27-14 Saturday night. Snapping a three-game losing streak, the Tigers (5-6, 2-5 SEC) continued to struggle to develop any sort of rhythm offensively, scoring only 17 points well into the third quarter against the nation's 115th-ranked scoring defense in ULM (4-7, 2-5 Sun Belt). "Very pleased with the win," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. "Did we play great? No. Did we make some mistakes? Yes, but we won the game. I'm happy for the boys. "It was good to finally be back at home and playing at night. Our guys were energized. I'm very pleased with how we played defensively. We came out and scored on the first drive offensively, but once again stalled in the red zone."
The fireworks started early for LSU (2-1), with freshman receiver Deion Smith setting the tone for the night with a spectacular snag over the top of a Central Michigan (1-2) defensive back in the end zone. Soon after, defensive back Tiger cornerback Derek Stingley forced a Chippewa fumble and defensive end Andre Anthony swooped in for the scoop and score, putting LSU up 14-0 less than five minutes into the game. The Tigers’ defensive line dictated every play. The pass rush once again had a monster night behind BJ Ojulari, Maason Smith, Jaquelin Roy, among others. The defense combined for 15 tackles for loss and five sacks. Meanwhile, in the run game, the linebackers played with a renewed sense of confidence, as Micah Baskerville, Bugg Strong, and Damone Clark flew across the field, finishing with six tackles each. The star cornerback duo of Eli Ricks and Stingley weren’t perfect, but they once again played a good game, eliminating the Chippewa receivers in the win.
LSU had a chance to make a statement early, and to give the team credit, it largely did so. LSU put together a 10 play, 63 yard drive which ate up 8:16 of clock, ending in a touchdown pass from Max Johnson to Trey Palmer. That was the good news. The bad news is that LSU seemed unable to build off of that opening drive, getting zero points on its next three possessions, including a turnover on downs when LSU was unable to convert on a 3rd and 1. McNeese is precisely the kind of team which LSU should dominate, and while LSU was never in serious trouble at any point in this game, the offense simply could not get things going. The biggest problem for LSU was an absolutely anemic run game. The Tigers could never establish a run game, and despite an early 21-yard gain, the Tigers finished the night with just 126 yards on 36 carries for a 3.5 yard average.
