Manchester United could move early for Paul Pogba's replacement if his heart is set on leaving next summer. Amid uncertainty over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United future, the clock continues to tick down on Paul Pogba's contract. Pogba is currently set to leave United as a free agent for the second time next summer, but his status could depend on Solskjaer's. On Fabrizio Romano's Twitch, Joris Crolbois claimed the 28-year-old is waiting to see if Solskjaer is sacked before deciding on his next move. Crolbois' comments suggested Pogba will look to leave if the Norwegian boss is still in charge, amid reports that several senior United players have lost faith in him. The Frenchman's exit would leave a significant hole to fill in the Red Devils' squad, which could prompt an early move to replace him. Express Sport looks at three midfielders United could make a play for in January if it's clear Pogba has his heart set on a summer exit.
Manchester United have reportedly identified Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz as a potential transfer target. Man United had a relatively successful summer transfer window, having drafted in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo. When you’re signing players of that calibre, the fans will find it difficult to have any complaints, but the Red Devils failed to strengthen in the one area they really needed to – midfield. Fred and Scott McTominay are quite clearly not good enough as a pairing for Man United to mount a title challenge, and unless that weakness is addressed in January, it’s unlikely Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be able to deliver the title. Thankfully for Ole, Fichajes report that Man United are now targeting a new midfielder in the shape of Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz. The report notes that Ruiz has emerged as an option for Man United, with Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Franck Kessie also being mentioned, but rather as a replacement for Paul Pogba.
Manchester United have already discussed the finer details of a move for West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, according to reports. The 22-year-old is said to have been earmarked as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba, who will be out of contract at the end of the season. The Frenchman has been in talks over a new deal for a number of months but is no closer to extending his stay at Old Trafford. Paris Saint-Germain have been credited with an interest in landing Pogba on a free transfer if he decides to seek a new challenge next summer. The 28-year-old's departure would leave United in need of a top-class alternative in order to maintain their Premier League title-winning ambitions. Rice, who has reportedly turned down several contract offers at West Ham, is believed to be a priority target for the Red Devils. He is currently tied down until 2024 but could be sold next summer if the Hammers are unable to agree an extension between now and the end of the campaign.
Luka Jovic’s time at Real Madrid hasn’t worked out. Having been compared to Luis Suarez during his time at Eintracht Frankfurt, the 23-year-old has suffered a remarkable fall from grace in recent years. But, amid claims Manchester United are determined to secure his signature, he could now be given a chance to save his career over at Old Trafford. After leaving Benfica, Jovic joined Frankfurt back in the summer transfer window of 2017. He enjoyed a positive first campaign in Germany, netting a respectable nine goals across all competitions. But it was his second season where Jovic really flourished, scoring a remarkable 27 times across all competitions. At the age of 21, he was operating at the peak of his powers. And it was Serbia coach Mladen Krstajic who then compared him to Atletico Madrid hitman Suarez in March 2020, saying: “He’s a classic goal-getter with great control of the ball and a good understanding of the game. “I’d probably compare him to Luis Suarez. “He’s courageous and dangerous at any moment because he’s always lying in wait for his chance or any inattention from the opponent.
Lionel Messi was close to agreeing an extension with Barcelona but things did not work out. The Catalan giants confirmed that the Argentine international will be leaving the club this summer. Since the news broke out, the legendary playmaker has been linked with the biggest of clubs in the world and reports suggest that Manchester United have moved in with an offer as well. According to Ian McGarry, Man Utd are prepared to agree a contract that will make the 34-year-old earn a gross salary of £42million in two seasons (i.e. £21million per year – £404,000-a-week). However, for now, French giants, Paris Saint-Germain are leading the race to hire the services of Messi this summer. They are offering him a deal worth £610,000-a-week. The transfer expert told the Transfer Window Podcast: “Paris Saint-Germain are in pole position with regards to securing Messi’s signature and are offering him a contract of around £63.5m (€75m) gross over two years, and then allowing him to leave for free.”
Manchester United will go into the new season with their most realistic chance of lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. United finished second last season, 12 points behind rivals Manchester City. And they are rapidly improving under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian has already brought Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford this summer, while he has also agreed a deal to snap up Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane. With Man Utd looking more like the team of old, there is a quiet confidence around the club that they could be a serious threat this season.
Manchester United’s win over Derby County in their pre-season opener sent a clear reminder of the need to sign Kieran Trippier. Despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka making the right-back shirt his own since he moved to Old, Trippier has emerged as one of United’s main targets for the summer window. Trippier is reportedly ready to return to England from Atletico Madrid following two years in the Spanish capital. United are the clear frontrunners to sign Trippier if he does indeed leave the Wanda Metropolitano this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not been impressed with Diogo Dalot and is ready to allow him to leave Manchester. One of the main reasons for that has been the form of Wan-Bissaka, who has become United’s clear first-choice right-back. He appeared in all but four of United’s Premier League games last season, drawing plaudits for his defensive work. The Englishman helped keep 13 clean sheets, winning 174 defensive duels and making 182 recoveries as United finished as runners-up to Manchester City.
