Still, the Capitals got goals from Wilson, Burakovsky, Michal Kempny and Devante Smith-Pelly, and 11 players scored at least one point. Washington started quickly, scoring twice in the first seven minutes. Wilson, playing his first game at home this season, scored 54 seconds in after a slick pass from Alex Ovechkin. Wilson simply deflected the pass past goalie Corey Crawford for a 1-0 lead. Burakovsky made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 6:36 of the first period. He got a loose puck and fired it by Crawford from the right circle. The Capitals acquired Kempny from the Blackhawks in a deal late last season, and he made it 3-0 at the 9:28 mark of that second period. He took a pass from Jakub Vrana (two assists) and scored on a slap shot from just inside the blue line. Chicago answered just over three minutes later when Brandon Saad flicked a high shot past Holtby after getting around defenseman Dmitry Orlov. Saad now has goals in three straight games, and this one made it 3-1. Erik Gustafsson then sliced the lead to 3-2 at the 5:23 mark of the third period. Hyman added his third of the season at 18:59 into an empty net. Tyler Ennis and Tavares also scored for Toronto. Mitch Marner and Ron Hainsey each added two assists. Cam Atkinson and Pierre Luc-Dubois each scored a goal and added an assist for Columbus. Frederik Andersen made 37 saves for Toronto, including some big stops in the third period. Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 22 shots. The Maple Leafs had a couple of close chances in the early minutes, including a hit goalpost. The Blue Jackets, however, scored at 14:39 on Atkinson's 13th goal of the season from the left circle on a pass from Dubois after poor clearing by the Maple Leafs. Dubois poked in a loose puck for his 10th this season at 19:10 of the first after Atkinson was foiled at the goalmouth. Artemi Panarin earned the second assist. The Blue Jackets had a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period. Toronto made it 2-1 when Ennis scored his third goal of the season from a sharp angle at 13:01 of the second period after working puck from behind the net. Frederik Gauthier and Hainsey earned assists. Soon after that, Andersen stopped Josh Anderson's backhand attempt on a breakaway, then the Maple Leafs tied the score at 2 when Tavares scored his 13th goal of the season on Marner's rebound at 17:20 of the second. Kasperi Kapanen also earned an assist. Johnson cut it to 2-1 early in the third period with his first goal of the season, skating in from the right circle and then scooping a shot over Hellebuyck's left shoulder. But Ehlers put the Jets back up 3-1 a little over three minutes later when he backhanded in a shot from the left side of the net off a nice crossing pass from Wheeler to finish a two-on-one break. After Colorado again closed to within a goal again on Jost's second goal of the season, Laine made it 4-2 with his eighth of the season and fifth in three games with a power-play goal.
