Eddie Nketiah’s first-half brace was eventually enough for us to claim all three points, but it was far from straight forward, despite Leeds being reduced to ten men from the 27th minute. Our striker scored twice in the opening ten minutes, and we looked to be in total control, especially after Luke Ayling was dismissed for a lunge on Gabriel Martinelli. But Diego Llorente’s second-half goal from a corner ensured a nervous finale. We started like a train though. Nketiah created the opening goal out of absolutely nothing. Illan Meslier pondered on a back pass just too long, Nketiah pounced, dispossessed the keeper and bundled the ball over the line. The Emirates was bouncing, and within minutes Nketiah dialled up the atmosphere even more with his second. Gabriel Martinelli deserves a huge amount of the credit for the way he hassled and harried away on the left wing, broke into the box and cut the ball back for Nketiah to sweep home first time. We were 2-0 up inside ten minutes, and looking to maintain the frantic early pace. Martinelli swung in another deep cross but it was just beyond Nketiah on the stretch. Cedric – playing at right back with Takehiro Tomiyasu shifted over to the left – was next to try his luck, firing over after Martin Odegaard’s cut back just evaded Nketiah. A wonderful first-time pass from Odegaard set up Saka inside the box, but his powerful shot was straight at Meslier. Leeds were reduced to 10 men when Luke Ayling was red carded for a reckless foul on Martinelli on the byline. The former Arsenal youth player went in two-footed on the Brazilian, and referee Chris Kavanagh’s initial booking was overturned after VAR intervention. In the ensuing melee Raphinha was booked – you could start to see why the visitors had set a new record for most yellow cards in a Premier League season. We were starting to camp out in the Leeds half. Martinelli squeezed a shot right across the line before Odegaard had a free kick cleared from underneath the cross bar by Diego Llorente. We continued to dominate after the break. Martinelli twisted and turned his marker before shooting at Meslier at the near post, while Nketiah had a header from a corner blocked. From Leeds’ first shot of the game they got back into it. Junior Firpo flicked on a corner and Llorente was unmarked at the far post to score past Aaron Ramsdale. All of a sudden from a position of total control, there were now some nerves around the Emirates. Leeds – throwing everything at the game now in their relegation fight – sent Meslier up for a late corner. We cleared it to Pepe but he couldn’t get it under control on the halfway line with the goal vacant. Ramsdale had to make a late save from Rodrigo, as incredibly we were hanging on for the points. There was no little amount of relief when the final whistle went. Four points clear, three games to go. The quest for European qualification goes on. #arsenal #nketiah #arteta Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. Goals from both centre-halves gave us a battling, huge victory in the chase for Champions League qualification, and secured a top-six finish in the process. Rob Holding's first-ever Premier League goal gave us the lead in the first half, only for the hosts to cancel it out just before half-time. But Gabriel's header at the far post in the second half was enough to clinch all three points and keep us in fourth place. After a fairly quiet opening half hour, in which neither goalkeeper was properly tested, it was Holding - in the side for the injured Ben White - who broke the deadlock. Eddie Nketiah had earned a corner after a run and shot that Lukasz Fabianski got down well to turn wide. Bukayo Saka floated in a dangerous corner, and Holding rose highest to head in off the post. It was his first-ever goal in the Premier League - on his 81st appearance - and it breathed life into a game that hadn't really got going until then. We failed to build on the lead though, and West Ham came roaring back. Aaron Ramsdale immediately made a fine save to deny Declan Rice at the near post, but we could not hold out until half-time. Vladimir Coufal was afforded time and space on the right flank to pick out Jarrod Bowen, who took a touch before firing past Ramsdale, via a slight deflection off Gabriel. Early in the second half there was a real heart in mouth moment when Ramsdale came tearing out of his box to meet the ball ahead of Bowen. The West Ham man went tumbling, but the decision went our way, with Bowen booked for simulation. Shortly afterwards we retook the lead. Another inswinging corner caused problems, the ball was half cleared to Gabriel Martinelli and he crossed for compatriot Gabriel to head in from close range. As the game entered the final 20 minutes we had a glorious chance to score the third. Mohamed Elneny spotted Nketiah's run from deep and released him with a long pass. The striker shifted it past Kurt Zouma, onto his right foot, but placed his shot just wide from 20 yards. The hard-working Nketiah had another chance from similar range soon afterwards, but this time Fabianski got down to save well. Sambi Lokonga blazed a shot over late on, but it didn't matter. The work had been done, and victory was savoured at the end by the vociferous travelling fans. European football for next season is assured - now to make sure it's in the Champions League. #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. We moved back into the top four thanks to a pulsating victory over Manchester United. It was a highly charged, incident-packed encounter from start to finish. Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka fired us into a two-goal lead inside half an hour, before United rallied to halve the deficit through Cristiano Ronaldo. Bruno Fernandes then missed a penalty before Granit Xhaka sealed the points with a superb 25-yard drive. These lunchtime kick offs can often have a sedate atmosphere early on. Not this one. The crowd were up for it from the kick off, and the team responded immediately. There were just two minutes on the clock when Tavares gave us the lead. Xhaka’s deep cross was missed by everyone in the United defence and found its way though to Saka. His shot was parried by David de Gea but Tavares was in the right place at the far post to tuck home. It was the full back’s first goal for the club since joining from Benfica last summer. United came back. Anthony Elanga had a low shot well saved by Aaron Ramsdale before Gabriel put in a great block after Ramsdale had presented the ball to Fernandes. Diogo Dalot was next to go close for the visitors, curling a shot from 20 yards over the keeper and against the crossbar. Chances were coming at both ends, and Eddie Nketiah had a great chance after being slid through on goal by Martin Odegaard but his shot was straight at de Gea. Moments later Nketiah thought he had beaten the keeper, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR for a very close offside call. However there was a foul on Saka in the build up, and a spot kick was awarded instead. For the second time in a week the England man stepped up and netted from the penalty spot. The two-goal advantage didn’t last long. United had been a threat throughout the opening half hour, and pulled a goal back through Cristiano Ronaldo, who stole in at the far post to fire home a looping cross. Ramsdale’s moment of hesitation proved costly. The first half was action-packed, and had flown by. Odegaard had another shot tipped away in injury-time – one of six attempts on target in the opening 45 minutes for us. Tavares should have hit the target soon after the interval. He found space inside the box, beat his man superbly, but blazed a shot high and wide. Tavares’s eventful afternoon continued when he gave away a penalty for handball. Fernandes stepped up, but his shot hit the post and went behind for a goal kick. It was a big let off, and moments later there was another when Ronaldo’s goal was ruled out for offside by the barest of margins. Ramsdale came up with a huge save at his near post to turn Dalot’s shot onto the woodwork. We were living dangerously, but Granit Xhaka’s fierce drive relieved the pressure. He picked up the ball five yards outside the box, shifted it on to his trusty left foot, and arrowed his shot beyond the despairing de Gea just inside the post. The Emirates erupted. With the two-goal cushion restored, we closed out the game to earn a second big win in the space of four days.
