Veteran duo Itumeleng Khune and Willard Katsande were left out of the matchday squad, as Virgil Vries and Siphelele Ntshangase were drafted into the line-up. Under the new mentorship, Chiefs got off to a fiery start as Khama Billiat, Leonardo Castro and Ntshangase looked lively in the final third. Castro, however, missed a sitter for Chiefs in the 12th minute after being played in by Billiat but instead of placing his spot, he went for power on his left foot and his strike sailed over the bar. Lebogang Manyama came close to breaking the deadlock for Middendorp’s charges in the 20th minute with a half-volley from that was brilliantly parried away by Matsatsantsa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Seven minutes later, United’s Evans Rusike had an opportunity to silence the Amakhosi fans who were vociferous in the stands after going through on the right side of the box but his low strike was saved by the hosts shot-stopper Virgil Vries with an outstretched leg. Chiefs were overwhelming Kaitano Tembo’s men from the first minute, but they could not find the finishing touch to their great combinations going forward. Billiat had another chance to find the breakthrough for the hosts five minutes before the break after going through on on goal, but as he was about to released his shot, Grant Kekana made a crucial tackle from behind as the sides went into the break all square. Billiat came close again to breaking the deadlock for Chiefs five minutes into the second stanza with a stinging strike that was searching for the bottom corner, but Williams was on hand to make a great save. George Maluleka finally broke the deadlock for Middendorp’s troops in the 64th minute with a dipping strike from outside the box that sailed into the back of the net, 1-0. Amakhosi had the momentum in the last quarter of an hour, looking threatening whenever they were going forward, especially with the pace of Billiat.. Kaitano Tembo shuffled his pack for the remaining stages of the second half, but Chiefs were drilled at the back and did well to thwart their opponents at every turn. In the end, Amakhosi managed the game well towards the end and held on for victory that sends them up to fifth. Here's how they lined up: Chiefs: 16. Vries, 18. Moleko, 29. Walusimbi, 5. Booysen, 4. Cardoso, 12. Maluleka, 10. Ntshangase (Mahlasela 46'), 22. Zulu, 21. Manyama (Zuma 90+4'), 11. Billiat, 8. Castro (Parker 61'). Subs: 44. Bvuma, 30. Hadebe, 20. Ngezana, 28. Zuma, 17. Mahlasela, 25. Parker, 6. Adrianarimanana. SuperSport: 30. Williams, 20. Kekana, 4. Daniels, 29. Gould, 14. Bhasera, 21. Ntshangase, 28. Mokoena (Lunga 74'), 24. Mbule (Keen 60'), 19. Rusike, 16. Modiba, 15. Lakay (Phala 46'). Subs: 33. Pule, 6. Letsholonyane, Fleurs, 17. Lungu, 11. Keene, 37. Mahlatsi, 16. Phala. Though Kaizer Chiefs wanted a home game they have instead been drawn away against ABC Motsepe side Tornado FC in the Nedbank Cup Last 32. The draw was conducted on Thursday night at the Nedbank Headquarters in Sandton. “We wanted a home game,” said Khama Billiat. “But we are professionals and we are looking forward to travelling to the Eastern Cape. We are looking forward to lifting this trophy.” Tornado FC play their home games at Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium and are currently on top of the log in their region. Holding 13 Nedbank Cup titles, Amakhosi last lifted this trophy in 2013. Chiefs are looking at this edition of the 2019 Nedbank Cup to get back to lifting trophies after an uncharacteristic three past seasons. Billiat joined Chiefs from Mamelodi Sundowns, where Pitso Mosimane has been in charge for six years. READ: Middendorp - I have some crazy ideas Now barely six months into his time at Amakhosi, the Zimbabwean international finds himself working with a new coach after the departure of Giovanni Solinas, who tried to build his team around Billiat. The former PSL Footballer of the Season says they need to stick to the ideas of the new coach so that they can progress
