Fans mocked him relentlessly, convinced the strange-looking “granny shot” was embarrassing. But every time the ball left his hands, it dropped cleanly through the hoop again and again, silencing the arena one shot at a time. What looked ridiculous actually had science behind it — the underhand motion created a higher arc, letting the ball fall into the basket at a steeper angle and making the rim effectively feel bigger. Decades earlier, NBA legend Rick Barry had already proven how deadly the technique was, finishing his career with a staggering 90% free throw percentage. Even Wilt Chamberlain tested it in 1962, instantly improving his shooting and even scoring a historic 100-point game that same season. But despite the results, the basketball world still rejected it. Wilt eventually abandoned the underhand shot, not because it failed, but because he believed it made him look weak and unmanly compared to the traditional overhand form. Years later, another NBA superstar, Shaquille O'Neal, faced the exact same problem. Known as one of the worst free throw shooters in league history, Shaq was personally advised by Rick Barry to switch techniques, but he refused, saying he'd rather miss every shot than shoot underhand because it looked uncool. His weakness at the line became so bad that teams invented the infamous “Hack-a-Shaq” strategy, intentionally fouling him because they trusted him to miss. And so, even after decades of proof that the so-called granny shot actually works, most NBA players still avoid it — not because it’s ineffective, but because they’re too afraid of how it looks. . . . The Los Angeles Dodgers kept the same lineup ahead of the second game of their series against the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers are in desperate need of some offense, falling short yet again in their series opener against their divisional rivals. They scored just three runs in the game, ultimately losing to a late-inning surge from the visitors. Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start for the Dodgers on Tuesday, making his eighth start of the season for LA. He has been solid for the Dodgers this season, posting a 3.09 ERA through 43.2 innings pitched so far. He has 40 strikeouts under his belt, and has gone at least five innings in each of his starts so far this season. Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani leads the line for the Dodgers, and will look to break out of the slump which has plagued him for nearly two weeks now. The superstar has four hits in 36 at-bats in May, and has struggled to produce any offense for LA since the beginning of the month. He has just one homer since April 13. Shortstop Mookie Betts will bat second behind Ohtani, exactly where he batted upon his return from the injured list Monday. First baseman Freddie Freeman bats third, followed by right fielder Kyle Tucker and catcher Will Smith. One of the Dodgers’ hottest hitters in third baseman Max Muncy bats sixth, followed by center fielder Andy Pages, who is also on a decent run for LA. He has allowed a home run in each of his last five starts, and has let multiple runs cross in every one of his outings this season. The Dodgers desperately need some help on offense, and could take advantage of a struggling pitcher to find the spark they need.
