Nate Oats Press Conference after 81-78 victory over South Carolina
Alabama basketball rebounded from its first conference loss while surviving another slow start Tuesday night. The Crimson Tide fought back from an early double-digit deficit before nearly throwing away a sizable second-half advantage but ultimately did enough to grind out a sloppy 81-78 victory at South Carolina. Alabama (16-5, 11-1 in the SEC) held on for the victory despite failing to make a field goal over the game’s final 4:20. Down by as many as eight points with 3:37 to play, South Carolina (5-8, 3-6) was able to cut the Tide’s lead to a single point on a layup from Justin Minaya with 2.4 seconds remaining. Alabama forward James Rojas was fouled on the ensuing inbound and made both of his shots before Keon Ellis picked off the Gamecocks’ Hail Mary inbound attempt to seal the game. Alabama turned the ball over 22 times preventing it from pulling away from an equally careless South Carolina team that gave the ball away 19 times. However, the Tide stayed true to its blue-collar ethos, coming up with 18 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second-chance points. A heroic late comeback wasn’t enough to undo a dismal start as No. 10 Alabama basketball suffered its first SEC defeat of the season, falling 68-65 at No. 18 Missouri on Saturday. The Crimson Tide (15-5, 10-1 in the SEC) trailed by as many as 22 points midway through the second half but used a 21-2 run to trim the deficit to a single point with 1:11 to play. Alabama had a chance to go ahead as Herbert Jones drove to the lane for a potential go-ahead layup with 6.5 seconds remaining. However, the senior forward was rejected by Missouri forward Mitchell Smith. Following two Missouri free throws on the other end, the Tide had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but Jaden Shackelford’s corner 3 came up short. Looking to match its longest winning streak in 35 years, Alabama basketball never looked like the team that captured the attention of college basketball over the past month. The No. 9 Crimson Tide saw its 10-game winning streak snapped Saturday as it fell, 66-61 on the road to No. 24 Oklahoma on Saturday. With the victory, the Sooners (11-4) recorded their third straight win over a top-10 team, becoming the first to accomplish the feat since Michigan in 2014. Alabama (14-4) lost for the first time since falling to Western Kentucky on Dec. 19. Down by as many as 12 points midway through the second half, Alabama clawed back, going on an 11-0 run while hitting three straight 3s to cut the deficit to 55-54 with 6:52 play. However, that shooting touch slipped away from the Tide late as it missed its final eight shots from the floor to close out the game. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Following three straight blowout victories, Alabama basketball expected a dogfight Saturday night. Mississippi State might not match the talent of the Crimson Tide’s previous three opponents, but the Bulldogs feature two starting forwards listed at 6-foot-10 or taller and lead the SEC in rebounding. It didn’t help that Alabama was missing forwards Jordan Bruner (meniscus) and James Rojas (medical condition) for the matchup. However, Alabama was able to hit enough shots to stave off an upset, during an 81-73 victory inside of Coleman Coliseum. With the win, Alabama (13-3, 8-0 in the SEC) extended its winning streak to nine games, its longest run since the 2002-03 team recorded nine consecutive victories to start the season. The Tide has also won its first eight conference games, tying the 1986-87 and 1974-75 teams which also started SEC play 8-0. Mississippi State (9-7, 4-4) lost for the third time in four games. Nate Oats explains locker room atmosphere following 94-90 win over Auburn
Alabama basketball exorcised a past demon while also getting a glimpse of its future as it remained unbeaten in SEC play with a 94-90 victory at Auburn on Saturday. The victory snapped a five-game road losing streak to the Tigers as the Tide won inside Auburn Arena for the first time since 2015. Alabama (9-3, 4-0 in the SEC) also extended its winning streak to five games, the longest winning run it has experienced in Nate Oats’ two years as head coach. Auburn moved to 6-6 and 0-4 in conference play. Freshman Joshua Primo scored a career-high 22 points, pacing the Tide as it failed to find its shooting touch early. After leading by as many as 10 points in the first half, Alabama allowed Auburn to come storming back. Trailing 58-57 in the second half, the Tide made five straight shots, culminating with a 3 from Jordan Bruner to go up 77-72 with 8:09 to play. Alabama extended its advantage to 82-74 before Auburn used a 10-0 run to take an 84-82 lead with 4:43 remaining.
