FULL MATCH HIGHLIGHTS | AFGHANISTAN VS IRELAND | 2ND T20I | SHARJAH Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan Shine as Afghanistan Beat Ireland to Level the Series Mohammad Nabi (59 & 1/14) and Rashid Khan (25 & 4/14) put on some incredible all-round show to help Afghanistan beat Ireland by 10 runs in the second T20I match and level the three-match T20I series 1-1. Afghanistan opted to bat first and was restricted to 14/4 in the 4th over but Mohammad Nabi (59) and Sediqullah Atal (35) shared an important 79-run stand for the 5th wicket to build Afghanistan’s fightback. Mohammad Nabi brought up his 6th T20I half-century as well as has become the top-scorer for Afghanistan in T20Is with 2103 runs, going past Mohammad Shahzad’s 2048 runs in the format. Rashid Khan scored a quick-fire 25-run knock and provided the team with an excellent finishing touch and helped Afghanistan finish on 152/9, the total they could have added 8-10 more runs, but the opponent bowlers proved to be too good with at the death overs. In Reply, Ireland took a flying start and added 49 runs for the first wicket before the skipper was bowled by Nangyal Kharoti with a beautiful delivery in the last over of the power play. Afghanistan got the momentum with that wicket as Rashid Khan took two wickets in two successive deliveries to take Afghanistan back into the game. Mohammad Nabi then joined the wicket-taking party as he showed excellent reflexes as he got a return catch off his own bowling to dismiss Curtis Campher for 6 to give Afghanistan the 4th in the process. Nangyal Kharoti trapped Andy Balbirnie off the last ball of his 4th over to give Afghanistan the 5th wicket. Rashid Khan came back and took two wickets in his last over as he removed Goerge Dockrell and Mark Adair one after the other to leave Ireland tottering at 95/7 after 15.4 overs. Ireland needed 51 off the last three overs when Gareth Delany stepped up and struck 4 sixes and three fours on his way to an 18-ball 39. He smashed Fazal Haq Farooqi for 22 runs in the 18th over before taking 11 runs in the penultimate over off Naveen Ul Haq to bring the equation down to 18 off the final over. He smashed a six down the ground off the 4th ball of the over to keep Ireland alive and when things were right down to the wire, Fazal Haq Farooqi held his nerve to defend 11 runs off the last two balls to help Afghanistan take the game home by 10 runs. Rashid Khan was awarded the Player of the Match award for his terrific all-round performance, whereas Mohammad Nabi was adjudged as the stylish Player of the Match. Afghanistan successfully managed to win the game by 10 runs and level the three-match T20I series 1-1, with the series decider scheduled to be played tomorrow at the same venue. Afghanistan opted to bowl first and led by the skipper Rashid Khan (3/19) and the debutant Nangyal Kharoti (2/16) restricted Ireland to 149/6 in the first inning. However, Afghanistan could not capitalize on their batting as kept losing wickets from the very first ball. A determined run-chase from Bangladesh in the first ODI saw them through to a convincing victory. After losing the T20I series hosts Bangladesh were off to a good beginning in the ODI series winning the opener by a comfortable 6-wicket margin. Their bowlers kept things tight and restricted Sri Lanka to 255. In response skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto's magnificent century and his unbeaten 165-run stand with Mushfiqur Rahim guided Bangladesh over the line. Bangladesh would look to continue the momentum. For Sri Lanka this is their only chance of drawing level. Will they be successful in making it 1-1? Just a day after Najmul Hossain Shanto's superb captain's knock steered Bangladesh home in a tricky run chase after the Sri Lankan pacers broke apart their top order the two teams are set to face each other in the second ODI of the three-match series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Friday (March 15). Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando gave an excellent start after Kusal Mendis opted to bat first on winning the toss. Both failed to convert the starts to a big one courtesy of Tanzim Hasan Sakib who grabbed three quick wickets. Mendis steered in the innings with a half-century and got good support from Janith Liyanage. Who has now hit three fifties in his young career kept Bangladesh at bay in the middle overs. Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed got the home team back in the game by dismantling the middle and lower order of the opposition including the wickets of two well-set batters and sharing 6 wickets between them. Mehidy Hasan Miraz kept things tight with a tidy spell of 10-0-33-1. There was no fight shown by the Lankan lower-order and hence they were bundled out for 255 in the 49th over throwing away the good foundation that the top and middle order set for the rest of the batters. Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madushan went bang bang bang and reduced Bangladesh to 23/3 in no time. Skipper Shanto who was searching for some runs led from the front and smashed an excellent century and got able support from experienced Tigers Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim as the hosts tackled. The spin threats of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana to chase down the target with 6 wickets and 5.2 overs to spare. Tanzim Hasan Sakib walked off the field after bowling 8.4 overs having concerns with his fully strapped right leg. There is no recent update about the pacer's fitness. The strategy to bat first backfired on Sri Lanka but they would have learned their lesson. The toss is in nobody’s control though and if the dew tonight is as heavy as it was in the last game things will certainly favour the chasing team. Some of the Sri Lankan batters got off to starts in the last game but didn’t convert them into something substantial. All-Round Afghanistan Beat Ireland in the first ODI Kabul: March 8, 2024: AfghanAtalan (310/5) have put on an impressive all-round performance to beat Ireland (275/8) by 35 runs in the first match of the ODI series in Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Earlier in the afternoon, AfghanAtalan were put into bat first and the duo of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (121) and Ibrahim Zadran (60) started off really well and shared 150 runs for the first wicket, which was their third 150-plus stand in ODIs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz brought up his 2nd against Ireland in 4 innings, which was also his 6th overall in ODIs, making him the joint-highest centurian for Afghanistan alongside Mohammad Shahzad with 6 hundreds to their names. Afghanistan lost three wickets in quick succession to go from 207/2 (38.1) to 216/4 (40.2) but the skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (50*) brought up his 20th ODI half-century and put on an excellent and important 71-run partnership with Mohammad Nabi (40) to take Afghanistan’s total to 310 runs in the first inning. In reply, Fazal Haq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai swung the new ball both ways to help Afghanistan with three early wickets to reduce Ireland to 34/3 in 10.1 overs before Harry Tector (138) and Lorcan Tucker (85) put on an incredible batting display as the duo shared 173 runs for the fourth wicket. This was Ireland’s highest partnership in ODIs against Afghanistan. This was also Harry Tector’s 5th ODI hundred and his maiden against Afghanistan. Fazal Haq Farooqi was brought into the attack and provided Afghanistan with an important breakthrough as he got Lorcan Tucker nicking one behind for 85 to give Afghanistan the fourth wicket. The wickets kept tumbling in Sharjah as Afghanistan reduced the visitors to 275/8 at the end of the 2nd inning to win the game by 35 runs. Fazal Haq Farooqi finished with 4/51, Azmatullah Omarzai picked up 2/47 off his 10 overs, whereas Noor Ahmad (1/61) and Gulbadin Naib (1/38) returned with one wicket each. The home side has a new look to it with the experienced trio of Tamim Shakib and Rahim not available for various reasons. Najmul Shanto will lead this rather young side as they start their preparation for the main event. Sri Lanka too have a change in captaincy for the first two games. Regular skipper Wanindu Hasaranga is suspended for the first two games and Charith Asalanka will lead the side in his absence. The Lankans played some exciting cricket against Afghanistan and would look to carry that into these three games. Anamul Haque needs 15 runs to complete 2000 runs in international cricket. It was only last Friday (March 1) that Najmul Hossain Shanto & Co. ended their respective stints at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 but so tight is the cricket calendar that only three days later hosts Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will face-off in a three-match T20I series beginning in Sylhet. All three T20Is – the remaining two fixtures are on March 6 and 9 – will be played in Sylhet. This is the road to ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean and it’ll be crucial for the teams to gather and then sustain momentum heading into the mega-event in June later this year. Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will not be in action due to eye issue. Mehidy Hasan Miraz the vice-captain of the T20I team has been dropped. Meanwhile Mahmudullah has returned to the T20I side after more than a year having smashed 237 runs with two fifties at a healthy strike-rate of 134.65 in the recently-concluded BPL season. Anamul Haque Mohammad Naim Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed all of who didn’t feature in Bangladesh’s previous T20I assignment in New Zealand (in December 2023) that ended 1-1 have been brought back. Mystery spinner Aliss Al Islam who earned his maiden call-up to the national team after. A successful campaign with Comilla Victorians in the BPL – he bagged 9 scalps at an impressive economy of 7.17 – has been ruled out with a finger injury. Jaker Ali has been drafted into the squad as Aliss' replacement. Jaker also featured for the Comilla-based franchise in the BPL. He hit 199 runs at a splendid strike-rate of 141.13 and at an awe-inspiring average of 99.50. Bangladesh will know they need a complete team performance against Sri Lanka who’ll be high on confidence after winning successive T20I series against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. Charith Asalanka will be the stand-in Sri Lanka skipper in place of Wanindu Hasaranga for the first two of three T20Is. It’s pertinent to note that Hasaranga was suspended for two T20Is by the ICC following his outburst against umpire Lyndon Hannibal in a T20I against Afghanistan. Hasaranga who was also fined 50 per cent of his match fee will return as captain for the final T20I on March 9. In Hasaranga’s absence Akila Dananjaya and Maheesh Theekshana are the other spinners in the squad. Opening batter Avishka Fernando has come in for the injured Pathum Nissanka. Sri Lanka will miss the services of Kusal Perera who is down with a respiratory infection. Niroshan Dickwella who last played for Sri Lanka in March 2023 has been named Perera’s replacement. Bangladesh the home team would’ve to be mentally ready to handle the pressure of expectations better. Sri Lanka on the other hand would bank on their batters and spin department to produce a special performance. The three T20Is could well be about one of the teams setting the bar so high that the other would have extra motivation to overcome the challenge thrown at them.
