Malgré l’absence notamment de Michael Owen, ballon d’or quelques semaines plus tard, les Anglais sont les grands favoris de la rencontre, premier du groupe après avoir humilié les allemands 5 buts à 1, chez eux à Munich. Mais ce jour-là à Manchester, les anglais vont rapidement être menés au score grâce à un but de Charisteas à la 36eme minute. De retour au score grâce au rentrant Teddy Sheringham, de passage à Old Trafford quelques semaines après son départ pour Tottenham, les Three Lions vont se faire surprendre des l’engagement par un but de Demis Nikolaidis. Le score est de 2 buts à 1 pour les Grecs, il reste 20 minutes à jouer. En difficulté dans le jeu et pas vraiment inspirés pendant toute la rencontre, les Anglais obtiennent le coup-franc de la dernière chance à la 92eme minute. Dans le même temps, l’Allemagne est allé prendre un point en Finlande ce qui lui permet de passer premier du groupe devant les Anglais. Una delle massime più usate nella storia della letteratura e del cinema. Da Stephen King a Quentin Tarantino. Una frase dall’origine sconosciuta, che però calza alla perfezione con il racconto di ciò che avvenne il 21 aprile del 2001. Il luogo di quella che, più che una battaglia, possiamo definire come una faida è l’Old Trafford. Il “teatro dei sogni” ospita il big match di giornata: il derby di Manchester. Da una parte, gli imbattibili Red Devils, riconfermatisi campioni d’Inghilterra ancora una volta. Dall’altra, i rivali del City, quasi certi di una retrocessione umiliante, al termine di una stagione da dimenticare. Un testacoda che, più che per la classifica, elettrizza i tifosi sugli spalti. La gara ricalca le attese. Lo United è più forte, ma gli Sky Blues non ci stanno. Non vogliono collezionare l’ennesima figuraccia. Howey porta i vantaggio gli ospiti, Sheringham pareggia su rigore, ma a pochi minuti dalla fine del match, succede un qualcosa di imprevisto e cruento. Imprevisto per tutti, tranne che per il protagonista del gesto. C’è una palla contesa nella metacampo City. Sulla sfera si lanciano in due. Hanno lottato uno contro l’altro per novanta minuti, ma non solo. Si conoscono e si odiano da almeno quattro anni. Sono Alf Inge Haaland, difensore norvegese del City e Roy Keane, icona dello United. Ed è proprio l’irlandese il protagonista di questa violenta storia. Ma, prima di capire come finirà, dobbiamo tornare indietro al 27 settembre 1997. Leeds, stadio Elland Road. Per la nona giornata della Premier League ‘97/’98 si affrontano i padroni di casa e lo United di Alex Ferguson. I bianchi di Graham, nonostante la disparità di rosa, sono una buona squadra. Per esempio, davanti giocano l’olandese Hasselbaink, futuro giocatore del Chelsea e il giovane australiano Kewell. In difesa, invece, appena arrivato dal Nottingham Forest, c’è Alf Inge Haaland. Giocatore duttile, di gran temperamento e dai piedi non proprio educati, è l’uomo giusto per queste partite. Lotta e non si tira mai indietro. Proprio come nei minuti finali della partita. Con il Leeds in vantaggio 1-0, grazie a una incornata di Wetherall, i Red Devils si buttano in avanti. Johnsen prova un filtrante per l’imbucata di Roy Keane. Il numero 16 affianca la sua corsa proprio a quella di Haaland. Dalle immagini non si capisce se i due si tocchino o si sfiorino appena. Sta di fatto che la palla esce sul fondo e l’irlandese cade in maniera innaturale. Il centrocampista resta a terra e in molti realizzano che l’infortunio è più serio del previsto. Roy è un lottatore nato, uno di quelli che non tira mai indietro la gamba , né con il club né con la Nazionale. Nella sua carriera, ha avuto scontri verbali e soprattutto fisici con mezza Premier. Insomma, quella botta non è certo un colpo da poco. Ma, mentre il giocatore dello United si sta disperando, il suo avversario si avvicina furente verso di lui e gli urla qualcosa. Come se lo volesse accusare di simulazione per guadagnarsi un penalty. Nigel Martyn, portiere del Leeds, intuendo la gravità dell’accaduto, allontana subito il suo compagno di squadra. Ma forse, in cuor suo, il numero uno inglese sta solo cercando di salvare il norvegese da una possibile vendetta. Già perché Keane non è tipo da dimenticare il passato. Fedele al suo credo di prenderle e darle senza risparmiarsi, in quei tremendi momenti e durante le visite mediche che gli confermano la rottura del legamento crociato anteriore, medita solo una cosa. Vendicarsi del suo rivale.
