Beide Teams legten mit herrlichem Offensiv-Handball los, mit hohem Tempo ging es hin und her. Auch wenn die Fehlerquote nicht niedrig war, so glänzten beide Teams immer wieder mit tollen Spielzügen, fanden nahezu perfekte Lösungen im Positionsspiel. Die Österreicher erarbeiteten sich mit viel Tiefe, guten Kreuzungen und treffsicheren Abschlüssen eine leichte Führung und konnten bis auf drei Tore davonziehen. Doch nach einer Auszeit stellten die Spanier ihr Abwehrsystem um, kamen über die offensive 3:2:1-Abwehr mit Gegenstößen wieder in Schlagdistanz – sollten aber nicht in Führung gehen. Zur Unzeit holte sich der spanische Topstar Alex Dujshebaev eine rote Karte nach einem Gesichtstreffer ab. Zur Halbzeit führten die Österreicher gegen die favorisierten Spanier mit 17:15. Auch nach der Pause blieb es ein Duell auf des Messers Schneide! Beide Teams hatten die Möglichkeit, ihre Führung auszubauen. Doch gute Paraden der Torhüter, Tempospiel, dramatische Fehlwürfe – alles hatte dieses Match. Mit vollem Risiko belohnten sich die Österreicher schließlich für einen überragenden Auftritt: das 33:33-Unentschieden genügt, um die Spanier aus dem Turnier zu schmeißen und mit einem Punkt im Gepäck in die EM-Hauptrunde einzuziehen. Christoph Baumgartner kam halbrechts im Sechzehner zum Abschluss, doch Rüdiger konnte den Schuss noch ans Außennetz abfälschen. Deutschland übernahm augenscheinlich die Spielkontrolle, doch nur Österreich kam zu dicken Chancen – insbesondere Michael Gregoritsch: Zuerst verzog der Freiburger eine Direktabnahme nach einem schnell ausgeführten Freistoß von David Alaba (12.), dann lief der Stürmer nach einem genauen langen Ball aus der eigenen Hälfte alleine auf Kevin Trapp zu, der Keeper konnte den Schuss aber noch blocken (17.). In der 29. Minute das verdiente 1:0: Österreich löste sich aus dem deutschen Pressing und kombinierte sich schnell nach vorne. Marcel Sabitzer drang in den Sechzehner, zog einen Haken und schloss trocken durch die Beine von Jonathan Tah ins linke untere Eck ab. Nachdem Baumgartners Fernschuss knapp über das Tor zischte, ging es in die Pause. Der tiefsitzende Frust der DFB-Elf entfaltete sich in Person von Leroy Sané: Erst foulte der Münchener Philipp Mwene, der dann Sané hinterhereilte. Der Deutsche ließ sich so zu einer Tätlichkeit hinreißen und griff Mwene an den Hals – Rote Karte (49.). Julian Nagelsmann reagierte mit vier Wechseln und einer anderen Grundordnung. Doch das Bild änderte sich wenig, Österreich hatte mit Posch (51.) und Gregoritsch (64.) gute Chancen auf das zweite Tor. Das fiel dann in der 73. Minute: Gregoritsch legte in den Lauf von Baumgartner. Der Leipziger nahm die Kugel mit Tempo mit und lupfte sehenswert über Trapp hinweg zum 2:0. Ein Fernschuss von Joshua Kimmich knapp über die Querlatte blieb der einzige erwähnenswerte Versuch auf einen Anschlusstreffer (78.). Stattdessen hätte Österreich in der Schlussphase mit Sabitzer (87.), Matthias Seidl (90.) und Xaver Schlager (90.+1) noch das dritte Tor erzielen können. Österreich hat sich für die Europameisterschaft qualifiziert. Die "Goldene Generation" gilt als Geheimfavorit... und das zurecht. Seit Ralf Rangnick den Job als "Teamchef" übernommen hat, geht es für das ÖFB-Team steil bergauf. Fußballerisch gibt es eine klare DNA: Gegenpressing, mutig, proaktiv... eben der typische RB-Stil. Grund genug, um über die Rolle von Rangnick im österreichischen Fußball zu reden. RB Salzburg hat er 2012 eine klare Philosophie verpasst, von der die aktuelle Generation profitiert.
