The Vaqueros (23-16, 9-9 WAC) scored four runs in the sixth to come back from a 2-0 deficit. Graduate student Jacob Hirsh led off the inning with a single and then freshman Vela alum Isaac Lopez hit an RBI-double. Graduate student Cameron Blake followed with a four-pitch walk before junior Diego Ramirez belted a three-run home run, his second of the season and of the week, to put the Vaqueros up 4-2. The Wildcats (19-20, 8-10 WAC) tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Brett Hammit two-run home run. The Vaqueros regained the lead in the seventh on an RBI-single by junior Chris Mondesi. The Wildcats came right back to tie the game at 5 in the bottom of the inning on a Tanner Tweedt RBI-double. That was it until the ninth. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. led off with a double against Tanner Riley (2-3). Sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to first got away, allowing pinch-runner and sophomore Spencer Serven to score. After another sacrifice bunt, Mondesi hit an RBI-single to put the Vaqueros up 7-5. That made a winner of senior Ricky Gerik Jr. (3-3), who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Offensively, Mondesi went a career-best 3-for-5 with two RBI. Lopez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Hirsh went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Brandon Pimentel went 2-for-5. Rojas finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Blake reached base three times, doubling, and drawing two walks. Ramirez reached twice, adding a walk to his home run. The Wildcats initially got on the board in the third on a Colton Eager home run. Then, in the fourth, Alexei Cazarin hit a two-out RBI-single to make the score 2-0. UTRGV hosts #7 Texas for the first time in 51 years on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. With the game scoreless in the third, Cardinals (15-18) leadoff man Taylor Darden drew a leadoff walk. Roberto Gonzalez followed with a ground ball up the middle. Junior Diego Ramirez ranged far to his right and grabbed the ball while dragging his toe across the second base bag for the force. He then made an off-balance throw to first to complete the double play. In the fourth, Nixon Brannan hit a hot shot into the shortstop hole. Freshman Vela alum Isaac Lopez went to his knees to stop the ball on the backhand. He got to his feet and made a strong throw to first to end the inning. In the sixth, with a runner at third and two outs, Brannan hit a deep fly ball to left field. Junior Brandon Pimentel raced back, and with his back to the infield, leapt and reached up as far as he could to make the catch to end the inning. In the seventh, Wilson Ehrhardt hit a chopper up the middle. Lopez ranged behind the second base bag to make the grab while throwing on the run to get the out. In the eighth, with two on and one out, graduate student Jacob Hirsh came racing in from center field to make a catch near the infield. In the ninth, Robert Gonzalez lifted a fly ball down the right field line. Graduate student Brett Cain raced in and toward the line and made a sliding catch. There were big moments for the pitchers as well. The Cardinals put two on with two outs against freshman Randy Garza (1-0) in the second, but Garza recorded a strikeout to escape the threat. Then, in the third, with a runner at second and two outs, Garza froze Herman Yanez to end the inning. Garza racked up a career-high four strikeouts in a career-high 4.1 innings for his first-career win. The Cardinals put runners on the corners with one out in the fifth. Senior Ricky Gerik Jr. came into the game and got an infield pop out and a strikeout to end the threat. The Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth. Graduate student Max Balderrama Jr. came out of the pen to get a fly out on the first pitch he threw. The Vaqueros (21-15) scored their first run against Aaron Celestino (3-2) in the third on a sacrifice fly by graduate student Bryan Sturges. The Vaqueros added three more runs in the fourth on an RBI-single by graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr., a wild pitch that scored Ramirez, and an RBI-groundout by junior Raul Ortega. Sturges belted a two-run home run, his fifth, in the fifth inning to put the Vaqueros up 6-0. The Cardinals scored their run in the seventh on a home run by Zach Limas. The Vaqueros got that run right back in the bottom of the inning on a Pimentel RBI-double. Ramirez added a two-run home run, the first of his career, to put the Vaqueros up 9-1. The Cardinals pushed two more across in the ninth on two-out singles by Yanez and Jimmy DeLeon. Ramirez finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cain went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Rojas finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Chris Mondesi went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The Vaqueros (20-15) broke the game open with six runs in the fourth. With runners at the corners and nobody out, graduate student Cameron Blake singled through the right side to bring in the first run. Juniors Diego Ramirez and Brandon Pimentel followed with RBI-singles to knock out Cam Blazek (1-3). One out later, a wild pitch brought home Ramirez. Then, after graduate student Brett Cain walked, sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez hit a two-run triple to cap the inning with the score 6-0. Sanchez finished 2-for-3 while Pimentel went 2-for-4. Junior Jesus Aldaz (4-3) racked up 10 strikeouts while allowing five singles and one walk in a career-high tying 6.0 innings for the win. After recording a 1-2-3 first inning, Aldaz allowed a leadoff single in the second. He then retired the next seven batters. Gunner Antillon hit a one-out single in the fourth, stole second and made it to third on an error, but Aldaz responded with back-to-back strikeouts as he retired the next seven batters. With two outs in the sixth, however, the Aggies (13-20) put two on with two out, setting up RBI-singles by Logan Gallina and Nolan Funke to make the score 6-2. The Vaqueros got one of those runs back in the seventh on an RBI-groundout by graduate student Bryan Sturges. Junior J.C. Ariza pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game. The Aggies (13-18) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as Gunner Antillon hit a two-run home run for the 2-0 lead. The Vaqueros (18-15) answered in the top of the third as they loaded the bases for junior Brandon Pimentel who delivered an RBI infield single that scored graduate studuent DeAndre’ Shelton cutting into the Aggies lead 2-1. Junior Bryan Sturges then followed with a two-run single that gave the Vaqueros the 3-2 lead which also knocked out starter Cade Swenson. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. then weclomed reliever Frank Dickson IV with a three-run home run that extended UTRGV’s lead to 6-2. The Aggies tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth. Logan Gallina drove in Kevin Jimenez with an RBI single. After a walk and a strikeout, Cal Kilgore delivered a two-run double to right field that cut the Vaqueros lead to 6-5. UTRGV got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth as sophomore and PSJA High alum Jacob Sanchez and graduate student Brett Cain delivered two-out hits, which set up junior Diego Ramirez who followed with an RBI single that made it 7-5. In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies tied the game at seven as the first two batters reached in the inning before Jimenez hit an RBI single that knocked UTRGV starter Kevin Stevens out of the game. Later in the inning, a passed ball allowed Antillon to score tying the game. The Aggies took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Antillon and a miscue in the outfield on a single by Jimenez that gave them the 9-7 lead. A throwing error in the top of the eighth allowed graduate student Cameron Blake to come in and scoring cutting into the Aggies lead 9-8 but the Aggiees answered with two more in bottom of the eighth to push their lead back to 11-8 to cap the scoring. Josh Laukkanen (1-0) earned the win after pitching two and a third innings while scattering three hits. Alex Bustamante earned his fourth save of the season after pitching two innings and allowing just an earned run while striking out four. Senior Ricky Gerick Jr. fell to 2-3 on the season aftr pitching two innings and allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on three hits with three strikeouts. The Vaqueros and Aggies will be back on the field tomorrow for the middle game of the series with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

Junior Brandon Pimentel was one of four Vaqueros (15-11, 5-6 WAC) with multi-hit games, going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Graduate student Bryan Sturges went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored while nailing a would-be base stealer. Sturges is now 17-for-32 (.531) during an eight-game hitting streak. Graduate student Cameron Blake went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Junior Diego Ramirez also scored twice. Graduate student Brett Cain went 2-for-4. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. finished with two RBI. The Vaqueros jumped on Steven Beard (2-2) right away, as Rojas hit an RBI-single and then during the next at-bat, got caught in a rundown on a stolen base attempt to allow Pimentel to score from third. The Bearkats (16-11, 7-4 WAC) answered against junior Colten Davis (4-1) in the second with a two-run home run by Walker Janek, an RBI-double by Clayton Chadwick, and an RBI-single by Justin Wishkoski to make the score 4-2. Chadwick added another RBI-single in the fourth and then Easton Loyd scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to put the Bearkats up 6-2. The Vaqueros answered with three runs in the top of the sixth, as Sturges hit an RBI-double, Rojas lifted a sacrifice fly, and sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez hit an RBI-groundout to make the score 6-5. Chadwick came up with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to make the score 8-5. The Vaqueros got one back in the seventh on a Sturges RBI-single, but the Bearkats score two more with two outs in the eighth on a two-run single by Wishkoski. Lane Lusk pitched 2.0 innings for his fourth save, allowing just a Sturges sacrifice fly in the ninth. GoUTRGV.com RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Junior Brandon Pimentel hit a pair of three-run home runs to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team to a 23-3 victory over the George Washington Colonials on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, completing the three-game sweep in front of a crowd of 946. After drawing 2,418 fans on Friday, the largest crowd since prior to 2008, and 1,189 fans on Saturday, UTRGV finishes the weekend with a three-game attendance of 4,553, an average of 1,518 per game, and the best since prior to 2008. This is the third-straight season in which attendance was not limited that UTRGV has drawn more than 4,000 fans for their first three home games. UTRGV drew 4,298 fans (1,433 per game) for games against Kansas State in 2020 and 4,142 fans (1,380 per game) for games against Oklahoma State in 2019. This is UTRGV’s highest scoring output since scoring 23 runs against Louisiana Tech on March 7, 2010. Pimentel drove-in a career-high six RBI, the most for a player in program history since March 5, 2010, when Vinnie Mejia drove-in six runs against Louisiana Tech. Mejia hit one three-run home run in that game. This is the program’s third six-RBI performance since 2008. Jordan Rutenbar drove-in six runs at Northern Colorado without hitting a home run on May 3, 2008. In what was his first-career multi-home run game, Pimentel finished with a career-high three hits, going 3-for-4, and a career-high three runs scored. Pimentel’s first home run went out to right field and gave the Vaqueros (3-0) a 3-1 lead in the first against Justin Solt (0-1). His second home run went out to left field and put the Vaqueros up 8-1 in the fourth.
