Olympic Day 2018 | Panevėžys, Lithuania
Olympic Day 2018 | Panevėžys, Lithuania

28 thousand people. The fall of biathlete Tomas Kaukėnas from a canoe. Marathon runner Diana Lobačevskė riding a horse. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania throwing foul shots while seated in a wheelchair. 42 thousand steps made by photographer Vytautas Dranginis. A brand new song by the Eurovision participant Ieva Zasimauskaitė. All this and much more occurred on the 2ndof June at the Olympic Day which took place in Panevėžys. “Only 28 thousand? It felt like 51 thousand to me”, joked the Mayor of Panevėžys Rytis Mykolas Račkauskas at the end of the Olympic Day. The free-of-charge LTeam participant passport challenges attracted 14 thousand people. Another 3.5 thousand participated in running, stand up paddle boarding, LTeam 3x3 basketball, bicycles and scooters challenges. During the Partners Cup 150 people participated in teambuilding activities, while the finals of the Lithuanian School Games attracted 500 pupils. According to organizers, the participants also brought around 10 thousand supportive family members and friends. “The number of the Olympic Day participants has increased again. Today Olympic, non-Olympic and paralympic sports were joined in a harmonious unity and gained lots of popularity. Together with the residents of Panevėžys we managed to prove that we can achieve anything we want to. We are thankful to the city and its mayor for productive cooperation”, said the LNOC President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė. The event was attended by families, sports enthusiasts and professionals. Around 30 Olympians, who participated at the event, tried out new sports or challenges. Boxer Tadas Tamašauskas took up a challenge at the pavilion of Lithuanian wrestling, Member of Parliament Gediminas Vasiliauskas demonstrated his skills of acroyoga, and actor Marius Jampolskis participated in sitting volleyball challenge. “I tried out a lot of sports and challenges, among them - judo and karate. At first I had no idea what to do during a fencing challenge, but I always welcome new experiences. The most exciting of them was an opportunity to ride a sports horse. This time I did not do a time challenge, instead, I simply enjoyed the pleasure of engaging in sports”, said Lithuania’s fastest marathon runner D. Lobačevskė. Next year the Olympic Day will take place in Klaipėda, therefore at the end of the event the LNOC President D. Gudzinevičiūtė together with the Mayor of Panevėžys R. Račkauskas handed the Olympic Day flag to the assistant of the Mayor of Klaipėda Arūnas Šulcas. The celebration of the Olympic Day started 70 years ago. In Lithuania the first celebration event took place on May 13, 1989, where the Olympic champion Šarūnas Marčiulionis lighted the Olympic torch at the Gediminas Castle and sent it in a relay through the Baltic states until it reached the capital city of Estonia. For four years the Olympic Day has been visiting different cities of Lithuania - Kaunas, Šiauliai, Alytus, and Panevėžys. The most recent event in Panevėžys attracted a record number of visitors - 28 thousand people.

Gareth Bale with Cristiano Ronaldo on first day of training at Real Madrid
Gareth Bale with Cristiano Ronaldo on first day of training at Real Madrid

After playing 30 minutes for Wales on Tuesday, Gareth Bale finally joined up with his new Real Madrid team-mates on Wednesday. Video released by the club showed a smiling Bale being greeted by team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo as he arrived at the Valdebebas training ground. He was then greeted by manager Carlo Ancelotti and his assistant Zinedine Zidane at a pre-training session in a meeting room. Bale then joined the rest of players for a two-hour session, where he met up with his former Spurs team-mate Luka Modric. Only Ancelotti, and perhaps his coaching staff, know whether Bale will make his debut during Saturday's La Liga match against Villarreal. But Wales boss Chris Coleman said on Wednesday that Bale is not fit enough to play a full 90 minutes. Real have won their opening three La Liga matches under Ancelotti, who replaced Jose Mourinho at the end of last season. Report by Mark Morris.
