The battle to sign F1's shock star debutant for 2023
Hot off the heels of a shock and highly impressive Formula 1 debut in the Italian Grand Prix, Nyck de Vries is suddenly a man in demand. Unsurprisingly, scoring points after a late call-up on Saturday to replace the unwell Alex Albon has reinforced Williams’s interest in signing the Mercedes reserve driver full-time for 2023. But Williams faces competition from Alpine, which has its own seat to fill next year and plans to test de Vries in the coming weeks. These teams were sniffing around de Vries before Monza, so his Italian GP performance isn’t exactly responsible for the rush to sign him.
