The Cleveland Cavaliers hired Kenny Atkinson & extended Donovan Mitchell... so what's next?
It's been a busy 48 hours for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After introducing Kenny Atkinson as the team's new head coach on Monday, the Cavs made a splash Tuesday morning by announcing Donovan Mitchell's 3-year max contract extension worth up to $150.3M. So now that the two biggest dominoes of the offseason have been knocked down, what's next for Koby Altman & the Cleveland Cavaliers? The Cleveland Cavaliers have found their next coach and have hired Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson, the Cavs announced today. Atkinson was an assistant with the Warriors for the past three seasons after he spent the 2020-21 season as an assistant coach with the LA Clippers. Before that, he was coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-20, when he and the team parted ways on March 7, 2020 after a 28-34 campaign with the Nets. “Kenny brings a wealth of experience, a proven track record of player development, and a relentless work ethic that aligns with the vision we have for this franchise,” Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman said in a statement. “His innovative approach will instill a style of play and brand of basketball that will give us a chance for sustainable success and ultimately compete for championships.” About Atkinson: A longtime assistant under Mike D’Antoni in New York, the 56-year-old Atkinson got his first head coaching gig with Brooklyn in 2016. He went 118-190 with the Nets over four seasons before stepping down. Atkinson is a Long Island native who had been an assistant coach with Atlanta and New York when Nets general manager Sean Marks hired him as Nets coach in April 2016. That came with the Nets were mired near the bottom of the NBA as they tried to dig their way out of damage following a 2013 trade with Boston, in which they acquired Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce but gave up years of assets and salary-cap flexibility. Brooklyn went 20-62 in Atkinson’s first season, 28-54 the next and nothing much was expected last season. Reaction to the Cleveland Cavaliers taking Jaylon Tyson at #20 + welcome to the bigs, Jhonkensy Noel
With the 20th pick in the NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select California guard/wing Jaylon Tyson. Tyson was ranked a little lower on most draft boards than 20, but the Cavs are hoping his NBA ready game makes up for the little reach. Will Koby Altman and company try and jump back into the 2nd round to add another pick? Will Bronny James be an option for Cleveland in Round 2? The Cleveland Guardians lost the final game of the series vs. the Baltimore Orioles, but rookie Jhonkensy Noel hit a monster shot in his first at-bat of the game. What's his upside as a prospect for the Guardians? If every player in the NFL was in a draft, and all contracts were equal, how many players would be selected before Myles Garrett? UCSS will draft the first round until a player from the Browns goes off the board. ******* This episode of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show is brought to you by BetterHelp. UCSS PT 2: Luis Robert Jr. trade rumors for the Guards & Darius Garland trade scenarios for the Cavs
Kevin Stefanski still hasn't announced who will call plays for the Cleveland Browns in 2024 yet, but Deshaun Watson and David Njoku may have. On his podcast, Watson laid out what Dorsey has meant to the offense so far and at his softball event, David Njoku called the new playbook "juicy" -- whatever that means. If it is Dorsey, is that the right call? The Cleveland Guardians may be interested in trading for Chicago White Sox CF Luis Robert Jr., who would provide a massive bat in the middle of the team's lineup. Is Robert Jr. worth the price you'd have to pay to get him? How concerned should we be about Josh Naylor's recent slump? Guardians announcer Jim Rosenhaus joins the show to discuss that and more. If the Cleveland Cavaliers decide to trade Darius Garland this summer, what's the best, realistic return Koby Altman could get for his former All-Star PG? We run through 8 possible trade scenarios for DG. Plus, is James Borrego worth having a bidding war over? The Cavs may have some competition for their top choice at HC. ******* This episode of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show is brought to you by BetterHelp. BREAKING: Cleveland Cavaliers fire head coach JB Bickerstaff
BREAKING NEWS out of the NBA this morning - the Cleveland Cavaliers have fired head coach JB Bickerstaff. Bickerstaff led the Cavs past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since the early 1990s without LeBron James, but it wasn't enough to keep his job long-term. UCSS will break down the news & figure out which candidates might be best suited to fill his position. The Cleveland Browns completed day two of OTAs Wednesday, but it was the first time media was allowed at practice this offseason. Deshaun Watson went through mental reps but did not throw. Za'Darius Smith explained why he came back to Cleveland. Two rookies stood out in Jamari Thrash & Nate Watson. So what's the big takeaway from Day 2 of camp? PFF released its Top 25 NFL Players Under 25 list and no Browns made the cut. Did MJ Emerson & Dawand Jones get done dirty? TheRinger also released its Top 25 NBA Players Under 25 list and two Cleveland Cavaliers made the list. Darius Garland came in at #24 while Evan Mobley came in at #15. Is TheRinger too high on the Cavs young guys or are we too low on them? The Cleveland Guardians swept the Mets this week to improve to 33-17 on the season, increasing the team's win streak to 6 games. Who gets the most credit for this team's hot start? Plus, is Progressive Field a hitters ballpark now? ***** This episode of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show is brought to you by BetterHelp.
