Der amtierende Weltmeister Argentinien hat den Rekordtitelträger Brasilien in der WM-Qualifikation deutlich geschlagen. Das Team von Nationaltrainer Lionel Scaloni gab vor heimischem Publikum im Stadion Monumental in Buenos Aires eine überzeugende Vorstellung und entschied das südamerikanische Prestigeduell gegen die Selecao mit 4:1 für sich. Der Gastgeber, der zuletzt 1:0 gegen Uruguay gewonnen hatte, ging bereits in der 4. Minute durch einen Treffer von Alvarez in Führung. In der 12. Minute erhöhte Enzo Fernandez zum 2:0. Der frühere Leipziger und Herthaner Matheus Cunha verkürzte für die Gäste in der 26. Minute auf 2:1, bevor Mac Allister in der 37. Minute zum 3:1 traf. Giuliano Simeone, Sohn von Atletico-Coach Diego, setzte in der 71. Minute schließlich mit dem 4:1 für die argentinische Nationalmannschaft den Schlusspunkt. Ein Sieg in Argentinien ist den Brasilianern zuletzt vor 16 Jahren gelungen. Die bis dato letzte Partie zwischen den beiden großen südamerikanischen Mannschaften entschied Argentinien im November 2023 im Maracana-Stadion in Rio de Janeiro mit 1:0 für sich. Brasilien, das vor der empfindlichen Niederlage gegen den Erzrivalen mit 2:1 gegen Kolumbien gewonnen hatte, steht nach 14 von 18 Spieltagen in den Eliminatorias auf dem vierten Platz mit 21 Zählern und hat damit sechs Zähler Vorsprung vor Platz 7, der zur WM-Relegation berechtigt. Sechs südamerikanischen Mannschaften qualifizieren sich direkt für die WM 2026, die erstmals mit 48 Teams ausgespielt wird.
