And Sunday was no different: inconsistent performances with the bat, ball, and uninspiring fielding against Delhi Capitals saw RCB slip to its sixth consecutive defeat. Virat Kohli top-scored for the side with a 33-ball 41, but the team struggled to put up a challenging score. No hope remaining? Mathematics is what an RCB fan must resort to now. Irrespective of the net run rate, it would take eight victories for a team to qualify for the knockouts. Teams with just seven wins have qualified on earlier occasions, but that would require a very high NRR. As it happened RCB's situation is bleak, yet all hope is not lost. When it comes to the worst starts to a season, RCB has joined Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) at top of the list with six losses on the trot, followed by Deccan Chargers (now Sunrisers Hyderabad) with five. Incidentally, IPL powerhouse Mumbai Indians has featured thrice on this list, one which all teams hope to avoid. Here's a list of teams with the worst possible starts to a season and where they finished in the points table at the end of the league stage Virat Kohli Says No Excuses Left After RCB's Sixth Straight IPL 2019 Loss Virat Kohli has been leading Royal Challengers Bangalore for past six seasons but the star-studded unit has massively underachieved. Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper, said that he has no more excuses to give after his team slumped to a record-equalling sixth straight defeat in the Indian Premier League on Sunday. Delhi Capitals defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets as they chased down the target of 150 with seven balls to spare. Kohli's side, who are yet to win the coveted Indian Premier League title, are rock bottom in the eight-team league and the captain has become increasingly frustrated with his side's performances. "We need to grab those chances, can't give excuses every day. We weren't good on the day again. That's the whole story of RCB this season," Kohli said after the loss in Bengaluru. RCB now share the dubious record of a team's worst IPL start along with Delhi Capitals (previously Delhi Daredevils), who suffered six losses in a row in 2013. "When the mind is cluttered, you wouldn't be able to focus on the chances that come your way. Clarity of mind is very important in the game especially if you want to convert the half chances and pull the game back. "Shreyas (Iyer) got 67, he was dropped (on four)...you never know, you can come back in the game at any time," Kohli said. Iyer was dropped by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel early into his knock and got another lifeline on 42. RCB have dropped 15 catches so far in their six outings and Kohli is of the view that he cannot control these things beyond a point. "There's nothing more you can tell the team. We've asked the boys to take responsibility. It hasn't happened so far, and that's the reality," said Kohli, who leads the IPL batting chart with 5,151 runs. "Personally, not trying to control. After a while, it's about the skill. Key is to relax, whatever's in front of us. We want to enjoy as a team, otherwise we won't be able to play any good cricket," he added. Kohli has been leading the team for past six seasons but the star-studded unit has massively underachieved. RCB ended the last two IPL seasons in sixth and eighth spot. As part of a special BBC Wales Scrum V Sunday feature, Sean ventured to Sardis Road, home of Pontypridd RFC for their last home Welsh Premiership match of the season. The visitors? Cardiff RFC. Before the game Pontypridd were lying in 3rd position four points behind leaders Merthyr. They still had a mathematical chance of winning the League should results go their way. In glorious sunshine, a large crowd witnessed a physical encounter. Cardiff, with a depleted side due to a big injury list, looked the more threatening side for large periods of the game. But, with the vocal home crowd roaring them on, a late surge meant that Ponty ran out winners by 18 points to 8. Of course, Dusan Tadic deserves a huge slice of credit, his double in this south-coast derby against Bournemouth providing the Saints' hopes of staving off relegation a colossal boost. But their manager Mark Hughes, too, is justified the acclaim thrown in his direction. Southampton were a sinking ship when he took over in March. After this crucial win against their bitter rivals, hope springs eternal. Stoke's unlikely draw at Liverpool in the early kick-off plunged Southampton even deeper into the relegation mire; Hughes' side dropping down a place to 19th before they'd even kicked a ball. Nevertheless, the Saints knew exactly what was at stake. Victory would provide themselves with a fighting chance of survival; defeat didn't even bare thinking about. Bournemouth, barring a mathematical miracle, went into the clash safe in the knowledge that they'll remain a Premier League outfit next season. Indeed, the visiting supporters made hay of their neighbours' precarious future, incessantly goading all those with Saints connections about the possibility of spending next season in the Championship. In the end, Southampton had the loudest of last laughs.
