And Sunday was no different: inconsistent performances with the bat, ball, and uninspiring fielding against Delhi Capitals saw RCB slip to its sixth consecutive defeat. Virat Kohli top-scored for the side with a 33-ball 41, but the team struggled to put up a challenging score. No hope remaining? Mathematics is what an RCB fan must resort to now. Irrespective of the net run rate, it would take eight victories for a team to qualify for the knockouts. Teams with just seven wins have qualified on earlier occasions, but that would require a very high NRR. As it happened RCB's situation is bleak, yet all hope is not lost. When it comes to the worst starts to a season, RCB has joined Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) at top of the list with six losses on the trot, followed by Deccan Chargers (now Sunrisers Hyderabad) with five. Incidentally, IPL powerhouse Mumbai Indians has featured thrice on this list, one which all teams hope to avoid. Here's a list of teams with the worst possible starts to a season and where they finished in the points table at the end of the league stage Virat Kohli Says No Excuses Left After RCB's Sixth Straight IPL 2019 Loss Virat Kohli has been leading Royal Challengers Bangalore for past six seasons but the star-studded unit has massively underachieved. Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper, said that he has no more excuses to give after his team slumped to a record-equalling sixth straight defeat in the Indian Premier League on Sunday. Delhi Capitals defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets as they chased down the target of 150 with seven balls to spare. Kohli's side, who are yet to win the coveted Indian Premier League title, are rock bottom in the eight-team league and the captain has become increasingly frustrated with his side's performances. "We need to grab those chances, can't give excuses every day. We weren't good on the day again. That's the whole story of RCB this season," Kohli said after the loss in Bengaluru. RCB now share the dubious record of a team's worst IPL start along with Delhi Capitals (previously Delhi Daredevils), who suffered six losses in a row in 2013. "When the mind is cluttered, you wouldn't be able to focus on the chances that come your way. Clarity of mind is very important in the game especially if you want to convert the half chances and pull the game back. "Shreyas (Iyer) got 67, he was dropped (on four)...you never know, you can come back in the game at any time," Kohli said. Iyer was dropped by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel early into his knock and got another lifeline on 42. RCB have dropped 15 catches so far in their six outings and Kohli is of the view that he cannot control these things beyond a point. "There's nothing more you can tell the team. We've asked the boys to take responsibility. It hasn't happened so far, and that's the reality," said Kohli, who leads the IPL batting chart with 5,151 runs. "Personally, not trying to control. After a while, it's about the skill. Key is to relax, whatever's in front of us. We want to enjoy as a team, otherwise we won't be able to play any good cricket," he added. Kohli has been leading the team for past six seasons but the star-studded unit has massively underachieved. RCB ended the last two IPL seasons in sixth and eighth spot. Thanks West Indian opening pair of John Campbell and Shai Hope dominated the day in a big win over Ireland in the first match of the Walton One-Day Series at Clontarf today. After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Campbell (179 from 137 balls) and Shai Hope (170 from 152 balls) put on a 365-run opening stand – the highest first-wicket stand in one-day international cricket history. While Ireland’s bowlers were on the back foot, the returning Barry McCarthy claimed two wickets (2-76), and Mark Adair claimed his first international wicket for Ireland. SCORECARD IN BRIEF Ireland v West Indies, one-day international, 5 May 2019, Clontarf Cricket Club West Indies 381-3 (50 overs; J Campbell 179, S Hope 170; B McCarthy 2-76) Ireland 185 (34.4 overs; K O’Brien 68, G Wilson 30; A Nurse 4-51) West Indies won by 196 runs Full Scorecard Ireland’s response got off to a positive start with captain William Porterfield hit three boundaries in the first six balls, but the loss of early wickets meant Ireland was always going to be fighting to keep in the fight. Andy Balbirnie, batting positively with several flourishing shots, was struck in the helmet and had to retire hurt. He returned later, eventually dismissed for 29 – during the innings he scored his 1,500th ODI run for Ireland in this his 100th match for the men in green. But the best innings of the Ireland batting response went to Kevin O’Brien who hit 68 from 77 balls (seven fours, one six). O’Brien looked in total charge of the bowlers – even the fastest seamers in the Windies attack: “Shannon [Gabriel] roughed up a few of us, but we’re going to be facing the quickest bowlers in the world now. I enjoy facing them, as strange as it seems, it’s a challenge, to get in and get into the fight. It’s interesting facing the quickest bowlers, but it’s enjoyable at times.” After O’Brien fell, wickets tumbled at regular intervals and Ireland were dismissed for 185, handing West Indies a 196-run victory. After the match, Kevin O’Brien gave his assessment: “It wasn’t best day in the office. The difference between Friday’s match [against England] and today was that on Friday everything stuck which is great for us on the day, but today everything went just out of reach – they didn’t really give any chances. You’ve got to give them credit, they played very well, it was just unfortunate we didn’t turn up in the field and let them get in and get away.” “We were well placed at one stage to chase a total of 330, but perhaps the start we had losing early wickets made it difficult of course to chase 380.” When asked what the last two games have taught the Irish side, O’Brien said: “I think we’ve learnt how clinical we have to be, to deal with the bad ball and in the field - we can’t drop any catches and have to take the run out chances when they come. Our bowling has to be spot on as we don’t have the raw pace that other teams have, so we’ve got to be very accurate. It’s good that the young guys are experiencing this cricket, the likes of Mark Adair and Lorcan and Josh as well, even the likes of Barry McCarthy who has been in and out of the side as well, it was good #johnCampbel, #shaiHope, #WestVsIre, #1stODi, #WorldRecored,
