There was late drama at the Keepmoat Stadium as Ben Whiteman’s 88th-minute penalty sealed a dramatic 2-1 win over local rivals Rotherham United after James Coppinger’s volley cancelled out Jake Hastie’s opener.
Doncaster v CharltonA late Matty Blair goal means Rovers are still in the tie as they head to The Valley on Friday night for the second leg of the Sky Bet League One semi-final after strikes from Charlton Athletic’s Lyle Taylor and Joe Aribo put the visitors ahead in the first-half. Rovers hit the woodwork, had a chance cleared off the line, and saw numerous shots fire just wide of both of Dillon Phillips posts in what was an extremely frustrating afternoon at the Keepmoat Stadium before Blair finally registered the goal, they deserved just five minutes from time.
Doncaster Rovers defender Paul Downing felt his side showed character to come back from behind to earn a point in Saturday's game against fellow Sky Bet League One promotion chasers Charlton Athletic. Mallik Wilks' goal ensured Rovers took appoint away from the Keepmoat Stadium, and Downing believes the side deserve credit for bouncing back so quickly after falling behind against the Addicks. Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann said his team's ruthlessness in front of goal made the difference as they earned the bragging rights over neighbours Scunthorpe United in Sky Bet League One. Rovers took the lead through a Ben Whiteman effort after six minutes and had doubled their advantage by the 10-minute mark thanks to a calm finish from Herbie Kane. The match was wrapped up in the second half when John Marquis scored his 12th league goal of the season to make the final score 3-0. And McCann revealed hard work on the training ground in the week building up to the match at the Keepmoat Stadium was behind the success.
