Michigan State plays with ‘broken hearts’ as it supports Cassius Winston … ------------------------------ EAST LANSING -- Zachary Winston’s smile is what left the biggest impression here at the Breslin Center. The younger brother of Spartans point guard Cassius Winston spent plenty of time at Michigan State’s basketball facility over the last four years while visiting his brother. He left a mark as someone who thought about others and made friends feel good. Zachary died on Saturday night after being struck by a train in Albion, where he was a sophomore on the school’s basketball team. A day later, Tom Izzo told his players on Sunday to play with broken hearts as they supported their senior star and remembered the brother who meant so much to him. "He just always had a smile on his face around us, he put smiles on our faces," Spartans senior Kyle Ahrens said of Zachary. "He always knew how to make us feel good, always asking us how we were doing. He was a brother." The tragedy within the Winston family led to a day unlike any other in Michigan State basketball history. Izzo called it the most difficult day of his coaching career. The Spartans coach said he received news of Zachary Winston's death shortly after midnight on Saturday night. He spent the next four hours with Winston and his family at the Spartans' team hotel, talking until nearly morning. Izzo, the Hall of Fame head coach who has a plan to deal with every situation his team comes across, found himself with no way to fix this situation. "That's what we do, we see problems and we try to fix them," Izzo said. "In this case, there was nothing we could say or do that could make anything any better. So all we did was tell Cassius that we're going to support him." Izzo left that conversation doubting that Winston would play in the Spartans' game against Binghamton on Sunday night. Coaches and players told Winston that the decision was completely up to him. He decided to play, and when he did so turned in the 13th double-double of his career, with 17 points and 11 assists in Michigan State's 100-47 win. "The intestinal fortitude he showed to be able to do what he did at the level he did it at is truthfully unbelievable I think, for as close and as big a loss as it was in a short period, was unbelievable," Izzo said. Winston put on that performance with his father, Reg, and brother, Khy, watching from a few rows back in the stands. The emotion was raw throughout, from the Winston brothers sitting next to each other in warm-ups to Ahrens putting his arm around Winston during a pregame moment of silence, sensing that his teammate was having a tough time. "He needs to know that he's not alone," Ahrens said. "We're there for each and every way. He's our brother. He's family." Izzo spent much of the day doubting that Winston would want to play less than 24 hours after learning of Zachary's death. But he started thinking otherwise during the team's early afternoon shootaround. Winston showed up a few minutes into that shootaround alongside Reg and Khy. When the shootaround was over, the three of them remained on the court to help Cassius finish up his shooting. Izzo has seen the Winston family together on plenty of basketball courts, from Breslin to U-D Jesuit High School to the recreation centers in Detroit. Reg taught his sons the game and watched all of them play it through high school and into college.
