It was an extraordinary day of Test match cricket as ball dominated the bat yesterday. India get the first-innings lead. It was the pace bowler's paradise as 23 wickets fell on the first day for 270 runs. At the end of it all the Test match is nicely poised with India having their slight noses in front but South Africa are not out of it by any means. Today's play will be crucial for both sides. Let's recap you how day 1 panned out. The Proteas lost de Zorzi and Stubbs cheaply. It was South African skipper Dean Elgar who won the toss and elected to bat first on a challenging surface. Little did he know what was to follow thereafter. South Africa were blown away by a certain Mohammed Siraj as wickets fell at regular intervals. Only two players crossed double digits in David Bedingham. Kyle Verreynne as they scored 12 and 15 respectively. The rest of them fell for single digits as South Africa were bowled out for 55 in the first session of play in 23.2 overs. Mohammed Siraj was the star of the show with figures of 6/15 in 9 overs. Mukesh Kumar picked up a couple of wickets in his 2.2 overs. While Jasprit Bumrah picked up a couple of wickets for 25 runs in 8 overs. Only 4 bowlers were required to be used by the Indians. In reply India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma built a partnership of 55 runs for the second wicket with Rohit scoring 39 off 50 balls while Shubman Gill scored 36 off 55 balls. Both getting starts and getting out. Virat Kohli came in and looked at ease as he held the innings together with his 46 off 59 balls and top scored in the innings. India were 153/4 at one stage but then shockingly lost 6 wickets for 0 runs in a span of 12 balls to be bowled out for 153 with an overall lead of 98 runs. Wickets were shared by the South African pacers. Kagiso Rabada Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger all picked up three wickets apiece while there was a run out in the innings as well. Faced with a deficit of 98 runs South Africa put on an improved batting display. The openers Aiden Markram Dean Elgar put on 37 runs for the first wicket. Dean Elgar in his final innings fell for 12 to Mukesh Kumar. David Bedingham has just come into the crease. Aiden Markram is holding the innings together with his 36* off 51 balls as South Africa ended Day 1 in their second innings at 62/3 after 17 overs. Shubman Gill completes 1000 Test runs. Three bowlers used by India so far in this innings. Mukesh Kumar picked up a couple of wickets while Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Tristan Stubbs with a beauty. Siraj is still wicketless while Prasidh Krishna is yet to be introduced into the attack. South Africa win the toss and opted to bat first India make two changes whereas South Africa make three. Siraj draws first blood by dismissing Markram on two Elgar chops one back onto the stumps to give Bumrah his first and fall on four Debutant Stubbs departs on three as the Indian pace duo of Bumrah and Siraj breathed fire South Africa were reduced to 15/4. As a strangle down leg ended de Zorzi’s stay at the crease on two. Rohit starts positively and hits Ngidi for three boundaries in the second over KG Rabada draws first blood for South Africa by dismissing Jaiswal on a duck. For all the hype around India being favourites to secure an away series victory against South Africa they were outclassed inside three days of the opening Test. The duo of Lizaad Williams and Beuran Hendricks were also top-notch and troubled the Indian batters eventually restricting them to an under-par total. With just 213 runs to win the opening pair of Tony de Zorzi Hendricks started off cautiously but the former did go for his shots every now and then. Both raked in half-centuries but Hendricks never looked settled and got out but de Zorzi went from strength to strength bringing up a maiden ODI ton took his side over the line. Now the final game looms large before the action moves to Test cricket and the sides seem pretty evenly matched. Who are you backing to win? Paarl's pitch like its predecessors in the rubber should provide a fitting stage. The crowd will grace the occasion with verve. So theoretically the Indians have a better chance of winning than on Tuesday. Also the Wanderers is the only regularly used international ground in South Africa where India haven't lost more matches than they've won. They're level at 5-5 in Joburg. But the South Africans know how to win at the Wanderers where they have been victorious in 65.98% of their matches regardless of format in which a positive result has been reached. Only in Centurion are they more successful on that score and just 0.29% more. For all its reputation as a fast bowler's venue the Wanderers is a good place to bat especially in white-ball cricket. So will Suryakumar Yadav celebrate retaining the top spot in the T20I batting rankings with an innings as bristling with aggression as his 36-ball 56 on Tuesday? Will Rinku Singh convert his unbeaten 68 off 39 in the same match into something bigger? Or will potential debutants Nandre Burger and Ottniel Baartman again see below deny them by announcing themselves in style? As always before a match questions hang in the air like rain clouds. That's better for cricket of course than real rain clouds hanging in the air. What to expect: A willing pitch a small fast outfield and little chance according to the forecast of rain.
