Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski confirmed the offer and subsequent appointment of Don Mattingly as interim manager after firing Rob Thomson. Cora opted to prioritize spending time with his family in Puerto Rico, including his fiancée and twin sons, and prepare for a November wedding. Dombrowski praised Cora’s managerial abilities, comparing him to Hall of Fame managers. While discussions occurred, a formal agreement was never reached as Cora determined the timing was not right. Mattingly’s appointment is not expected to be a long-term solution, and Cora is anticipated to be a sought-after candidate for other managerial openings at the end of the season. The Phillies’ decision to pursue Cora came amid a disappointing 9-19 start to the season despite a high payroll.
