Max Verstappen’s path to winning the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship with four races to spare could not have been more different to the journey to his first title. Last year, he prevailed on the very last lap in the most intense title fight in history. But as this season has gone on, his progress has become increasingly serene. How Red Bull can fight F1 cost cap verdict after being found guilty
The FIA has officially confirmed that Red Bull overspent and breached Formula 1’s cost cap regulations during Max Verstappen’s first title-winning season in 2021. But the much-anticipated announcement from the governing body contained no details of the exact nature or precise scale of the breach, and said the penalty was still being discussed. Ferrari and Mercedes have made very clear they believe the laptime value of even what’s officially classed as a ‘minor’ breach would be considerable, and have already called for “severe” action long before the official announcement. But Red Bull refuses to back down. Not only does it remain adamant it came in under the cost cap for 2021, it has promised to follow the FIA’s processes to challenge the outcome, and hasn’t ruled out taking further action if necessary. A superlicence is a driver’s ticket to ride in Formula 1. As Colton Herta recently discovered, even if you have the offer of a race seat, without the right paperwork you cannot compete in F1. Currently, to qualify for an FIA Formula 1 Driver Super Licence – to use its official name – you must accumulate 40 points based on your achievements in three of the past four years. The 2023 driver market has offered a Formula 1 silly season for the ages - and it’s still not over. Three teams have seats to fill for next season and, surprisingly at this stage of the year, there are quite a few drivers still in play. We see Alpine, AlphaTauri, Haas and Williams as the teams with vacancies. And the list of drivers in play include race winners Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo, likely Haas refugee Mick Schumacher, out-of-work drivers Antonio Giovinazzi and Nico Hulkenberg and rookies such as Nyck de Vries, Jack Doohan and Logan Sargeant.
