McLaren’s dramatic F1 2023 turnaround explained
McLaren’s Formula 1 revival was on shaky ground for the first half of 2023, but its recent upturn in form gives hope to fans of the papaya team that it’s very much back on target. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri starred in qualifying at the British Grand Prix, taking second and third on the grid. They would have finished there, but for an unfortunately-timed safety car that meant Piastri dropped to fourth behind Lewis Hamilton. That’s a dramatic turnaround for a team that was at the back as recently as the Miami Grand Prix in May and looked in danger of falling permanently behind its midfield rivals. The car was so impressive at Silverstone that Lewis Hamilton called it “a rocketship". So was this a one-off, or are there signs of a genuine resurgence for McLaren? Cualquier intento de hacerlo debe ser visto con el entendimiento de que es una instantánea del orden como lo vimos despuĂ©s de tres dĂas en Bahrein, no una predicciĂłn enfática para la carrera inaugural de la temporada o la clasificaciĂłn final del campeonato. Hemos tenido en cuenta la velocidad a una vuelta, el ritmo en tandas largas, las impresiones en pista y los comentarios de los equipos, luego hemos leĂdo un poco entre lĂneas y despuĂ©s hemos hecho algunas conjeturas para tratar de determinar las diferencias entre la clasificaciĂłn de las pruebas y la realidad. Why Ferrari and Mercedes are the only teams not copying Red Bull's F1 car
Nothing that’s happened in F1 testing has dented Red Bull’s status as pre-season favourite in 2023. It set an ominous pace over the three days in Bahrain and once again looks like the car to beat. What testing has done is prove that main rivals Ferrari, which looked quick over a lap but struggled more over long runs, and Mercedes, which battled balance problems, are determined to go their own way with their cars. Other than Mercedes and Ferrari, almost every team in F1 has edged more in the direction of Red Bull’s concept – save for Haas, which is locked into a more Ferrari-esque style owing to their shared components. That’s because Red Bull is F1’s most successful car and, presumably, because those teams have evaluated Red Bull’s ideas back at their factories and seen enough to make them believe it’s the right way to go for these still-young ground effect regulations. So why are Mercedes and Ferrari so convinced that their alternative approaches are going to work?
