Considering the first match of this men's T20I series at Kingsmead on Sunday was lost in its entirety because of the weather and Tuesday's game at St George's Park was curtailed after the skies leaked again that's no small thing. Cricket minded fans of the electrical thunderstorms that grace the Highveld during South Africa's summers and there are many would concede that the match must take precedence over even the epic show the weather puts on in Johannesburg. With both teams playing only four more T20Is before the World Cup in the format in the Caribbean and the United States in June they need all the gametime they can get. Many of the players involved will turn out for a host of T20 franchises before the World Cup but nothing polishes on-field and dressingroom dynamics like playing together. It's what turns collections of cricketers into teams who win tournaments. On the admittedly scant evidence of the Tuesday when South Africa won by five wickets with seven balls to spare. The home side are tightening those nuts and bolts better than the visitors. Neither side handed down a masterclass in a match that was messy from start to finish but one of them found ways to win while the other lost their way. Maybe India are still getting over last month's rude awakening at the ODI World Cup which around 1.4-billion people seemed convinced they had some divine right to win. Until they didn't and Australia did because sport doesn't work that way. The South Africans haven't had to face that challenge no-one expected them to come home with the World Cup. Indeed they performed better than anticipated to reach the semis. That's not to read too much into the last game of a rubber India can no longer win. Besides they have claimed only two of the 15 bilateral series they have played in South Africa across the formats. But one of those was a T20I series in February 2018. Gerald Coetzee South Africa's most successful bowler on Tuesday with a haul of 3/32 has been taken out of the mix (see below) and Shamsi whose Gqeberha economy rate of 4.50 was easily the best in both attacks might be less effective on a Wanderers pitch. So theoretically the Indians have a better chance of winning than on Tuesday. Also the Wanderers is the only regularly used international ground in South Africa where India haven't lost more matches than they've won. They're level at 5-5 in Joburg. But the South Africans know how to win at the Wanderers where they have been victorious in 65.98% of their matches regardless of format in which a positive result has been reached. Only in Centurion are they more successful on that score and just 0.29% more. For all its reputation as a fast bowler's venue the Wanderers is a good place to bat especially in white-ball cricket. So will Suryakumar Yadav celebrate retaining the top spot in the T20I batting rankings with an innings as bristling with aggression as his 36-ball 56 on Tuesday? Will Rinku Singh convert his unbeaten 68 off 39 in the same match into something bigger? Or will potential debutants Nandre Burger and Ottniel Baartman again see below deny them by announcing themselves in style? As always before a match questions hang in the air like rain clouds. That's better for cricket of course than real rain clouds hanging in the air. What to expect: A willing pitch a small fast outfield and little chance according to the forecast of rain. Shubman Gill might make way for Gaikwad who didn't play on Tuesday due to illness. Ravi Bishnoi looks set to crack the nod ahead of Kuldeep. Not for India fans. Their team defeated Australia 4-1 in a T20I series a week ago. Their team lost a World Cup final three weeks ago. What appears is that even if their team doesn’t have the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami for a series or two the crowd proudly wears the blue jersey to witness them play consistent cricket. India now face South Africa in a three-match T20I series beginning Sunday (December 10) at Kingsmead Durban. The second T20I will be played on December 12 at St George's Park Gqeberha while the third and final game is scheduled for December 14 at New Wanderers Stadium Johannesburg. In the absence of Rohit and the injured Hardik Pandya Suryakumar Yadav will be the stand-in skipper. It’s pertinent to mention that Suryakumar led India in the T20Is against Australia too. Shubman Gill who was rested for the Australia series is back in the mix. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli requested a break from the white-ball leg of the tour after a jam-packed three months. Ravindra Jadeja makes a return and so do Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. Jadeja is also named vice-captain for the series. India will know they need a complete team performance against South Africa who’ll be high on confidence after some dominating displays in the ODI World Cup. Kagiso Rabada and Temba Bavuma have been left out. Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen will miss the third T20I. The mentioned players aim to focus on the high-octane two-match Test series against India starting December 26. Lungi Ngidi who initially was part of the T20I squad for the opening two games has been ruled out of the entire series due to a left ankle sprain. Ngidi is being closely monitored. Skipper Aiden Markram Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller form a strong Protea middle-order. Meanwhile Anrich Nortje and Wayne Parnell continue to recover from their stress fracture and shoulder issue respectively. Both teams missing some key players may not be a bad thing because it will allow them to test those who are otherwise on the bench. Since the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 India have competed in six T20I series against five different opponents. They beat New Zealand (2) Sri Lanka Ireland and Australia but lost to the Windies. At the Asian Games India didn’t drop a game. The final against Afghanistan was washed out. By the virtue of being the top-seeded team India won the gold medal. After suffering a group-stage exit at the last year’s World T20 South Africa have played only two 3-match T20I series three games each against Australia and the West Indies. The Proteas suffered a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Australia. The 2021 T20 World Cup champions while they lost 2-1 to the two-time winners (in 2012 and 2016) Windies. South Africa vs India 1st T20I Which team will come out on top? Cloudy with a chance of rain. That followed the Australians finding a way to humble hitherto unbeaten India in the ODI World final in Ahmedabad on November 19. India's men's side have offered an answer to that question by claiming four victories in the five T20Is they played against Australia in the past not quite three weeks. What to expect: A slowish but fair surface which could be enlivened by the 15 millimetres of rain that has been forecast for a stormy morning. Anticipate also a farewell for Wilson Ngobese who joined Kingsmead's ground staff in 1975 and has been the head curator since 1999. This will be Ngobese's last international pitch. Can teams move past the blow of failing to win an ODI World Cup with success in mere T20Is? Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content. Both Bumrah and Prasidh had pretty good outings in the opening game on Friday (August 18). In fact, Bumrah took just two balls to strike and ended up picking two wickets in his very first over and Prasidh struck in his first over as well. Both the pacers will be looking to carry forward that momentum as they look to get back to their best after long layoffs. However, the batters would now hope for some much-needed time out in the middle as well after rain hampered their chances in the first T20I. Chasing a modest 140, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma before rain arrived and ruined any chances of the rest getting a hit out in the middle. The next two games are definitely vital for the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube. While Samson needs runs to ensure he remains in the reckoning for a spot in the ODI World Cup, the likes of Gaikwad, Rinku and Dube will be looking to make an impression to ensure they are considered in future T20 fixtures on the road to the World Cup next year in the Caribbean. For Ireland, it's vital that they don't go 2-0 down already with a game to spare especially against a second-string visiting side. They did exceedingly well to get to 139 after losing half their side for just 31. Barry McCarthy stunned India with a quickfire fifty but it's the top order that needs to come to the party if Ireland are to put up a fight with the bat. Men in Blue's young blood brought team India back from the 2-0 deficit to 2-2 after a 9-wicket victory on Saturday. The left-handed wunderkind batter Yashasvi Jaiswal's match-winning 84* and was well supported by Shubman Gill's who played a crucial knock of 77 paved the way for a historic 165-run partnership against WI, propelling the Visitors to a resounding 9-wicket victory over the Caribbean on 12th August. The remarkable performance not only squared the ongoing five-match T20I series but also set the stage for an exciting Sunday showdown to determine the ultimate winner between WI and IND. The caravan has now moved on to Lauderhill in the USA for the final two games. After losing a couple of closely-fought games the Men in Blue put in a dominant performance in the previous game to keep the series alive. India’s talisman in this format Suryakumar Yadav soared high and played a blistering knock to help his side coast home. That's a strong finish from Odean Smith as the flexing of muscle helps him gain a six. The Windies end up with 178 runs on the board for the loss of eight wickets despite being in a nervy situation halfway through the innings. 57 runs have been belted away in the last five overs by the Windies batters. A six in the first over from Kyle Mayers was a compliment to the disdain character that the nature of the pitch inherited in Florida during the first innings today. Although Mayers' sparkle didn't last long as the introduction of Arshdeep Singh acted as the resistance to his flow. In the left-arm pacer's second over within the powerplay he also removed the other opener- Brandon King who was looking to accelerate. The home side could manage to gather 55 runs from the powerplay for the loss of two wickets. Nicholas Pooran was the one who arrived at the stage alongside Shai Hope and then the spectators got to witness a double strike in the 7th over. It was the Kuldeep Yadav enchantment that got the better of Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell in the same over. All of a sudden a good start was curtailed down to a tricky 57-4 as the scoreboard read. Shai Hope: "Yeah I thought we started well. We can speak on all possibilities. But we didn't do well in the middle. Good innings from Hettie (Hetmyer) and it was a good finish in the end. Probably 10 runs short. They bowled decently we lost a few wickets in the middle. Hetmyer came in and played positively from the get-go giving me some breathing space. Obviously want to go and go on to get a big one. But it's what it is. I always wanted to play the format and contribute to West Indies. Today got the opportunity and I thought I was doing well. You always think that you have enough. But it's cricket anything can happen. Hopefully we can defend this." With India keen on experimenting keeping in mind the 2024 T20 World Cup Umran Malik can get a look in today. On the other hand West Indies have a chance to seal the series today with a game in hand. They had defeated South Africa 2-1 in their last T20I series in March this year. If they are able to win this series it would be their first back-to-back T20I series win since 2017. Coming to their playing XI if Jason Holder is fit he is likely to replace Roston Chase. Would they think of bringing in Hope in place of Charles due to the latter’s lean patch? In Lauderhill the hosts have a poor record against India having lost four won one being washed out. pitches here usually conducive strokeplay a high-scoring affair might cards. Pooran vs Kuldeep T20s 7 innings 41 runs 4 dismissals SR 95.34. Most runs conceded Indian spinner in the first over of the innings - T20Is: Ashwin - 17 vs ENG in 2014 Axar - 14 vs WI in 2023 Ashwin - 13 vs NZ in 2016 Sundar - 13 vs WI in 2019 Cometh the time Cometh the man. Shimron Hetmyer steps up when it mattered. Some hard work for Hetty and now one can expect some whacking in the remaining few balls that he face. A half-century for the Guyanese star. The home team West Indies surprised everyone by winning the opening two games and have a great chance now to seal a rare series win against India. It's a do-or-die game for India so expect another intense contest with lot at stakes for both the teams. West Indies have played like a unit in this T20I series been missing from their game for quite a long time now. Nicholas Pooran has been the standout batter while Rovman Powell has also batted well. Windies bat deep and have plenty of match-winners like Kyle Mayers Hetmyer in their arsenal which makes them a dangerous unit. On the bowling front too there are plenty of bowling options and all of them have been pretty disciplined in this series so far. the second T20I with some careless cricket at the backend and that is something they need to be vary of. Expect West Indies to come out all guns blazing again. India on the other hand need their batters to step up. They struggled big time on a slow wicket and apart from Tilak Varma other batters could not show any application. the top order as a whole has not fired and that is a worry for India. We might also see a Yashasvi Jaiswal debut in place of Gill who has played non-stop cricket recently and has struggled in this T20I series. Also it is high time a player of the caliber of Samson joins the party which could go a long way in India putting up a big total on the board. On the bowling front Yuzvendra Chahal has been fantastic to say the least but there is a possibility of Umran Malik of Avesh Khan coming in for Mukesh Kumar. It is a must-win game for this young Indian side and it is a test of character for Hardik Pandya and his boys. Let's see how things pan out. The eternal dilemma with Indian cricket in recent times has been regarding the balance between long-term planning and short-term results. During their ODI World Cup win in 2019 and the T20 title victory in 2022 England showed the benefits of having a vision without compromising on results. It is a template that the Indian team is still far away from cracking as they look to transition towards a phase beyond the Virat Kohli's and Rohit Sharma's. In that aspect the ongoing white-ball leg of the West Indies tour hasn't gone to plan for Hardik Pandya's men. They did win the ODI series but were stretched considerably and have now lost two T20Is in a row against West Indies for the first time since 2016. The fact that this has come at a time when the Caribbean side has been at arguably its lowest in terms of morale and squad strength makes the picture a lot worse for the Indian team. However like with anything there are pros and cons. The results haven't come as yet but India have been able to give game time to the likes of Tilak Varma (who has impressed straightaway) and Sanju Samson (who is yet to come to the party) as viable middle-order options. Mukesh Bishnoi and Ishan Kishan are the others who have gotten opportunities to be in the mix. With the T20 World Cup next year scheduled to be in West Indies and USA. What to expect: Another spin-friendly surface is expected at Guyana with variable bounce also expected to play a part. The forecast for the week is for rain in Guyana and this could be another key factor in the game. Being 2-0 up in the series is a position of strength for the hosts and they're unlikely to tinker with their playing XI. With two losses on the bounce change is inevitable and Jaiswal could finally get a spot in the XI. In such a scenario Samson might the one missing out. After a closely fought first T20I we now head into the second game of the five-match series coming live from Providence Stadium in Guyana. Suryakumar Yadav is all set to play his 50th T20I. Milestones Alert: Yadav is 3 wickets away from 50 T20I wickets. Powell is 6 runs away from 3000 T20 runs. Samson is 9 runs away from 6000 T20 runs. Suryakumar is 3 sixes away from 100 T20I maximums. Hardik Pandya is just a wicket away from the 150th T20 wicket. How will the pitch play: Recent history suggests that spinners will enjoy the conditions more as compared to the pacers and that could perhaps prompt a few changes from both sides. How is the weather? There were predictions of rain prior to the game but all of that seems to have vanished and we should in all likelihood have a full uninterrupted game of cricket. Toss Update: India won the toss and opt to bat first. Being an Indian cricketer is a challenging thing (speaking about adjusting to playing in different batting positions) I have played domestic cricket for the last 8-9 years and for India here and there so it gives you a bit of understanding of playing in different positions. It is the number of overs you get and it is not about batting position so you gotta prepare accordingly." were Samson's exact words during the mid-innings break of the third ODI. A lot of World Cup hopefuls from the Indian team would surely feel every bit of Samson's intensity and emotion involved in that chat. The focus will now shift from Trinidad to Guyana where the West Indies will try to consolidate their lead over India by defeating them in the second T20I of the five-match series. West Indies will be high on confidence in this fixture after successfully defending 37 runs off the final five overs to secure an incredible victory in the first game. Akeal Hosein McCoy and Holder all displayed impressive bowling prowess throughout the match while Shepherd bowled beautifully in the final over allowing four runs to seal the game's fate. Rovman Powell (West Indies Captain): "Yeah yeah definitely. The curator has done a great job and we are ready to go. With the way we batted in the previous match was fantastic. We didn't lose wickets at clusters and hence we are happy with the batting front. On the bowling side we could make a bit better. We are a boundary-hitting side. But we know that the singles and doubles are gonna be important. We haven't made any changes. We are going with the same team. Hardik Pandya (India Captain): "We are gonna bat first. We will try to put some total on the board and then see how it goes. We spoke about our batting. We identified some errors within the group and are focusing on the things which we can do better. You need to keep wickets in hand when you are not chasing 10 or 12 runs per over. Similarly Windies came back in the game when they were chasing in one game and happened with us as well. Kuldeep got hit yesterday in the nets nothing serious but he misses out as a precaution Ravi Bishnoi takes his place." Pitch Report (Samuel Badree): "Sunny weather at the moment here in Guyana. 64m boundary to my left from the Media Centre End. The other side of the square is as well has the same distance. Straight boundaries are a bit longer. Looking at the pitch there is a bit of grass on it. Though the grass is rooted a bit it is dry underneath. The fast bowlers will have a part to play in today's match. It was dry and slow in the first match at Trinidad. The scores might be a slightly different one from the previous game." The venue for the first game is Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Tarouba Trinidad and India would be hoping to dominate the proceedings like they did in the final ODI at the same venue couple of days back. West Indies though have some quality T20 superstars and we can expect a close intense affair. Rovman Powell will lead West Indies in T20Is and he would be looking to get back into some form after a torrid run in recent past. Along with him West Indies have powerful batters like Kyle Mayers Charles Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran who would be itching to translate his Major League Cricket form in international cricket. Hope and Holder are also back in the T20 setup while the bowling too looks pretty good with Akeal Hosein and Obed McCoy back in the mix. Expect Windies to give India a tough fight. India on the other hand have plenty of players who will be itching to prove a point at the international level. They might rest Shubman Gill and hand Yashasvi Jaiswal his debut in T20Is while Tilak Varma could also make his debut. The presence of Samson Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya make India a dangerous batting unit. Yuzvendra Chahal might finally get a game on this tour while Arshdeep Singh would add more strength to a young Indian pace attack. Can West Indies stop a rampant Indian unit and take a 1-0 lead in this T20I series? We shall find out. Suryakumar Yadav is a key member in the T20I team and he'll be hoping to get himself going in a format which has worked out well for him after an average showing in the ODI series. Umran Malik will be keen to find his rhythm and put the West Indian batters in a spot having not been at his best in the 50-over games. Meanwhile Mukesh Kumar after showcasing his skills in the Test and ODI formats in his maiden series for India will look to make a mark in the T20I format too if he is handed a debut. India have a plethora of spin options and it remains to be seen who among them get the nod. The West Indies side have plenty of quality players in their line-up but this will again be a fresh start for them after their poor showing in the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. They did win 2-1 against South Africa earlier this year and will be hoping to reflect on those performances as they look to challenge India who are starting a new journey of their own as the old guard makes way for new if the recent selections are anything to go by. What to expect: In the last match at this venue India scored 350-plus batting first in the third ODI and a similar batting-friendly wicket could be on offer. Will India rest Shubman Gill and give Jaiswal an opportunity at the top of the order to partner Ishan Kishan or play the former at No.3? Tilak or Sanju Samson for the middle order? Who among three wrist spin options and which pacer to leave out? set the ball rolling in terms of preparations for the next year's T20 World Cup which will be held in the Caribbean and the United States. Plenty of selection headaches for captain Hardik Pandya and the team management. Nicholas Pooran who missed the ODI series owing to his participation in Major League Cricket returns to the T20I side fresh off a match-winning 137 not out. The presence of Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope lend heft to the setup as does the return of Oshane Thomas to the pace department. who have played for India before but have gone off the radar a bit will be hoping to make the most of the platform.
