Bills QB Josh Allen played a 'well-rounded game' against the Titans
Second-year quarterback Josh Allen left Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee with a much better taste in his mouth than his week four loss to the Patriots. Allen led his team to a 14-7 win, the Bills third win on the road. It was a game that Allen finished 23-for-32 for 219 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. While the statistics weren't eye-popping, the context of his play from snap to snap passed the proverbial eye test. Allen simply let the game come to him. He was decisive on each and every play, including plays where he would have typically taken a shot down the field with a throw into tight coverage. The Firebaugh native, outside of his lone interception, did a phenomenal job of playing small ball. He routinely hit his weapons underneath, got to his third and fourth options and checked it down when he needed. It was a boring game relative to the style of play we are used to seeing from Allen, but its this style of play that will lead to more wins in the short term. Bills QB Josh Allen gets a reminder on 'what he can and can't do' vs. Lions
The Buffalo Bills' dress rehearsal game against the Detroit Lions ended with a win, but the 1st half of play from Josh Allen was a good reminder that he is still a work in progress. Allen finished the game 3-for-6 for 49 yards and his film was as much a rollercoaster ride as his stats show. Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll used the third preseason game to get the run game going, and it was a smart approach. The Lions have one of the best nose tackles in the league in Damon 'Snacks' Harrison. The 353-pound anchor is flanked by 310-pound Mike Daniels and 322-pound A'Shawn Robinson, so the home team's defensive front was a good test for the Bills run game. But gameplan, penalties and bad field position put the Bills' offense behind the chains early on, and put Allen in some precarious positions. The run-heavy game plan and struggles to move the ball early put the pressure on the 2nd-year QB, which led to some struggles with accuracy and bad decisions. "It's just a little reminder on what I can and can't do," Allen said after the game, "I understood that we wanted to run the ball, and I wanted to take a shot and I can't go in with that mindset." Allen got the mulligan on the interception, but going forward he has to exercise smarter decision making.
