George Kliavkoff OUT as Pac-12 Commisioner: Expansion Big 12, Brett Yormark Get the Last Laugh
The Pac-12 and its commissioner George Kliavkoff have mutually agreed to part ways, as announced by the league on Friday. With only Washington State and Oregon State remaining in the conference following significant realignment, the Pac-12 stated that it will provide further details regarding its new leadership in the coming week. Kliavkoff's final day in his role will be on February 29. This decision had been anticipated since last summer, when the Pac-12 faced dissolution after several schools departed for other conferences due to Kliavkoff's inability to secure a media rights contract agreeable to all parties. In less than three years under Kliavkoff's leadership, USC and UCLA declared their intention to join the Big Ten, followed by Washington and Oregon, while Cal and Stanford opted for the ACC. Additionally, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and Arizona State chose to align with the Big 12. Last August, Kliavkoff proposed a primarily subscription-based Apple streaming deal to the presidents and chancellors of the Pac-12, as part of negotiations for the league's television contract set to expire after this school year. This protracted process caused frustration among many within the conference and ultimately influenced Colorado's decision to join the Big 12, which in turn spurred the other schools' moves. Oregon State and Washington State found themselves engaged in a legal dispute with the ten departing schools over control of the conference, with Kliavkoff, the conference, and the University of Washington named as defendants.
